Mantras

Mantra 1

ओदनः। (१) तस्यौदनस्य बृहस्पतिः शिरो ब्रह्म मुखम्

The odana (rice-porridge): of that odana, Bṛhaspati is the head; brahman is the mouth.

Mantra 2

द्यावापृथिवी श्रोत्रे सूर्याचन्द्रमसावक्षिणी सप्तऋषयः प्राणापानाः

Heaven and Earth are the ears; Sun and Moon are the eyes; the Seven Seers are the in-breath and the out-breath.

Mantra 3

चक्षुर्मुसलं काम उलूखलम्

The pestle is the eye; the mortar is Desire.

Mantra 4

दितिः शूर्पमदितिः शूर्पग्राही वातोऽपाविनक्

Diti is the winnowing-fan; Aditi is the fan-holder; the Wind hath winnowed away (the refuse).

अश्वाः कणा गावस्तण्डुला मशकास्तुषाः

Horses are its grains; cows its rice-kernels; mosquitoes its husks.

Mantra 6

कब्रु फलीकरणाः शरोऽभ्रम्

Brown-hued, fruit-compelling; a reed—(and) a cloud.

Mantra 7

श्याममयोऽस्य मांसानि लोहितमस्य लोहितम्

Dark is its flesh; red—yea, red—is its redness.

Mantra 8

त्रपु भस्म हरितं वर्णः पुष्करमस्य गन्धः

Tin is its ash; green its hue; lotus is its fragrance.

खलः पात्रं स्फ्यावंसावीषे अनूक्येऽ

The threshing-floor is the vessel; the two winnowing-fans—for guarding, in the following (rite)…

Mantra 10

आन्त्राणि जत्रवो गुदा वरत्राः

The intestines, the collar-joints, the fundament—these are the thongs (that bind and hold).

Mantra 11

इयमेव पृथिवी कुम्भी भवति राध्यमानस्यौदनस्य द्यौरपिधानम्

This very Earth becomes the cooking-pot; of the rice-gruel as it is being dressed, the Sky is the covering-lid.

Mantra 12

सीताः पर्शवः सिकता ऊबध्यम्

The furrows are the ribs; the sands are the fastenings to be bound on.

ऋतं हस्तावनेजनं कुल्योऽपसेचनम्

Ṛta is the washing of the hands; the channels are the sprinkling forth.

ऋचा कुम्भ्यधिहितार्त्विज्येन प्रेषिता

With a sacred verse, O Pot, thou art set in place—impelled by priestly ministration.

ब्रह्मणा परिगृहीता साम्ना पर्यूढा

Grasped round about by holy power, and borne about by the Sāman-chant.

बृहदायवनं रथन्तरं दर्विः

The ladle is the Bṛhat-advance, the Rathantara chant.

Mantra 17

ऋतवः पक्तार आर्तवाः समिन्धते

The Seasons, timely, the Cookers, kindle in concert.

Mantra 18

चरुं पञ्चबिलमुखं घर्मो३भीन्धे

The Gharma-heat enkindles the Charu, five-mouthed with its apertures.

Mantra 19

ओदनेन यज्ञवचः सर्वे लोकाः समाप्याः

With boiled rice, with sacrificial speech, all the worlds are to be won entire.

Mantra 20

यस्मिन्त्समुद्रो द्यौर्भूमिस्त्रयोऽवरपरं श्रिताः

In whom the Ocean, Heaven, and Earth, the Three, are set—both lower and upper—resting fast.

Mantra 21

यस्य देवा अकल्पन्तोच्छिष्टे षडशीतयः

Whose—in the Remnant—were the Gods disposed in order, even the Six-and-Eighty in their full tale.

तं त्वौदनस्य पृच्छामि यो अस्य महिमा महान्

Thee, Odana, that mighty one, I question—what is this greatness of thine, so passing great?

Mantra 23

स य ओदनस्य महिमानं विद्यात्

He—whoso knoweth the greatness of Odana—(is the true possessor of its power).

Mantra 24

नाल्प इति ब्रूयान्नानुपसेचन इति नेदं च किं चेति

Let him not say, ‘It is but little’; nor, ‘It is without moistening’; nor yet, ‘What is this, forsooth?’

Mantra 25

यावद् दाताभिमनस्येत तन्नाति वदेत्

So long as the giver hath not yet set his mind thereon, let him not speak thereof beyond due measure.

Mantra 26

ब्रह्मवादिनो वदन्ति पराञ्चमोदनं प्राशीः३ प्रत्यञ्चा३मिति

The speakers of sacred lore declare: ‘Thou hast eaten the porridge turned outward; (thou hast eaten) that turned toward thee,’—so (they say).

Mantra 27

त्वमोदनं प्राशी३स्त्वामोदना३ इति

‘Thou hast eaten the porridge; the porridges (in turn) have eaten thee,’—thus (runs the saying).

पराञ्चं चैनं प्राशीः प्राणास्त्वा हास्यन्तीत्येनमाह

‘Thou hast eaten it turned outward; the vital breaths will abandon thee,’—so one saith to him.

प्रत्यञ्चं चैनं प्राशीरपानास्त्वा हास्यन्तीत्येनमाह

‘Thou hast eaten it turned toward thee; the downward breaths will abandon thee,’—so one saith to him.

नैवाहमोदनं न मामोदनः

Not, verily, am I the rice-porridge; nor is the rice-porridge myself.

ओदन एवौदनं प्राशीत्

The porridge itself hath eaten the porridge.

‘Beginning with thine eldest, thy progeny shall perish’—so spake he unto him.

Mantra 33

ज्येष्ठतस्ते प्रजा मरिष्यतीत्येनमाह

Him, in sooth, I hold as neither hitherward, nor awayward, nor returning toward (me).

तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम्

Mantra 35

बृहस्पतिना शीर्ष्णा

With Bṛhaspati as the (hallowing) power, with the head (as instrument).

Mantra 36

तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम्

Therewith I made him partake; therewith I caused him to attain (his goal).

Mantra 37

एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः

This, verily, is the odana—complete of every limb, complete of every joint, complete of the whole body.

Mantra 38

सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद

All-limbed indeed, all-jointed, all-bodied—into completeness he comes, who thus knoweth.

Mantra 39

३२॥ ततश्चैनमन्याभ्यां श्रोत्राभ्यां प्राशीर्याभ्यां चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन्

Thereafter, with the other two—namely, with the two ears—do thou cause him to partake; with which (two) the seers of old partook of this.

Mantra 40

बधिरो भविष्यसीत्येनमाह

“Deaf shalt thou become”: thus he addresses him.

Mantra 41

तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम्

Him, verily, I [leave] neither turned hither, nor turned away, nor turned back again.

Mantra 42

द्यावापृथिवीभ्यां श्रोत्राभ्याम्

By Heaven and Earth, by the two ears (the powers of hearing).

Mantra 43

ताभ्यामेनं प्राशिषं ताभ्यामेनमजीगमम्

With those two I made him eat; with those two I made him go forth (I drove him).

Mantra 44

एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः

This, verily, is the boiled rice: all-limbed, all-jointed, of every body-part complete.

Mantra 45

सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद

Whole-limbed indeed, whole-jointed, whole-bodied—he comes to be in full completeness, whoso thus knoweth.

Mantra 46

३३॥ ततश्चैनमन्याभ्यामक्षीभ्यां प्राशीर्याभ्यां चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन्

Thereafter with other eyes thou didst consume him—those very eyes wherewith the seers of old did eat of this.

Mantra 47

अन्धो भविष्यसीत्येनमाह

‘Blind shalt thou become’—thus unto him he spake.

Mantra 48

तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम्

Him verily I—neither hither-turned, nor away-turned, nor back-turned—(do I admit/allow).

Mantra 49

सूर्याचन्द्रमसाभ्यामक्षीभ्याम्

With the Sun and Moon for thine eyes.

Mantra 50

ताभ्यामेनं प्राशिषं ताभ्यामेनमजीगमम्

With those twain I caused him to eat; with those twain I made him go forth (to his appointed state).

Mantra 51

एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः

This, verily, the odana is all-limbed, all-jointed, of entire body.

Mantra 52

सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद

All-limbed indeed, all-jointed, of entire body, he becomes—whoso thus knoweth.

Mantra 53

३४॥ ततश्चैनमन्येन मुखेन प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन्

Thereafter thou shalt cause him to eat with another mouth, even that wherewith the seers of old did eat hereof.

Mantra 54

मुखतस्ते प्रजा मरिष्यतीत्येनमाह

‘From thy mouth thy progeny shall perish’—thus said he unto him.

Mantra 55

तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम्

Him, verily, I (hold) as neither turned hitherward, nor turned away, nor turned back against (me).

Mantra 56

ब्रह्मणा मुखेन

With brahman, with the mouth (as instrument).

Mantra 57

तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम्

Therewith I made him eat; therewith I set him a-going (I conveyed him onward).

Mantra 58

एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः

This, verily, the odana is all-limbed, all-jointed, of entire body.

Mantra 59

सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद

All-limbed, even so, all-jointed, of entire body—whole he becomes, who thus knoweth.

Mantra 60

३५॥ ततश्चैनमन्यया जिह्वया प्राशीर्यया चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन्

Thereafter with another tongue thou didst consume him—yea, with that wherewith the ancient Seers consumed this same.

Mantra 61

जिह्वा ते मरिष्यतीत्येनमाह

‘Thy tongue shall perish,’—thus said he unto him.

Mantra 62

तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम्

Him verily I make neither hitherward, nor outward, nor turned back again.

Mantra 63

अग्नेर्जिह्वया

With Agni’s tongue.

Mantra 64

तयैनं प्राशिषं तयैनमजीगमम्

With that I consumed him; with that I caused him to go forth.

Mantra 65

एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः

This, verily, is the odaná: complete in every limb, complete in every joint, complete in the whole body.

Mantra 66

सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद

Complete in every limb—yea, complete in every joint, complete in the whole body—he comes to be, who knoweth thus.

Mantra 67

३६॥ ततश्चैनमन्यैर्दन्तैः प्राशीर्यैश्चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन्

Thereafter, with other teeth thou shalt eat him—even with those wherewith the seers of old did eat this (food).

Mantra 68

दन्तास्ते शत्स्यन्तीत्येनमाह

‘Thy teeth shall be for a hundred (years),’—thus he said unto him.

Mantra 69

तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम्

Him, verily, I (hold) neither turned hitherward, nor turned yonderward, nor turned back toward (me).

Mantra 70

ऋतुभिर्दन्तैः

With the Seasons as his teeth.

Mantra 71

तैरेनं प्राशिषं तैरेनमजीगमम्

With those I caused him to eat; with those I led him onward.

Mantra 72

एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः

This, verily, is the Odana—complete in every limb, complete in every joint, complete in every body.

Mantra 73

सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद

All-limbed indeed, all-jointed, all-bodied—wholly he becomes, who thus knoweth.

Mantra 74

३७॥ ततश्चैनमन्यैः प्राणापानैः प्राशीर्यैश्चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन्

Thereafter, with other breaths—in-breath and out-breath—eat thou him, even with those wherewith the seers of old did eat this.

Mantra 75

प्राणापानास्त्वा हास्यन्तीत्येनमाह

“The In-breath and the Out-breath will forsake thee”—so spake he of this man.

Mantra 76

तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम्

Him, verily, I make not turned hither, not turned away, not turned back again.

Mantra 77

सप्तऋषिभिः प्राणापानैः

With the Seven Seers, with In-breath and Out-breath (as my powers).

Mantra 78

तैरेनं प्राशिषं तैरेनमजीगमम्

With those I made him eat; with those I made him go forth (upon his course).

Mantra 79

एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः

This, verily, is the rice-mess—complete in every limb, complete in every joint, complete in all the body.

Mantra 80

सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद

Whole-limbed indeed, with every joint entire, with all his body complete, he comes to be—whoso thus knoweth.

Mantra 81

३८॥ ततश्चैनमन्येन व्यचसा प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन्

Thereafter thou didst administer unto him with another pervading spell, even that whereby the seers of old were wont to partake of this.

Mantra 82

राजयक्ष्मस्त्वा हनिष्यतीत्येनमाह

‘Royal Consumption will smite thee’: thus said he unto him.

Mantra 83

तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम्

Him verily I—neither coming hither, nor going hence, nor turning back again—

Mantra 84

अन्तरिक्षेण व्यचसा

With the mid-air’s passage, with the all-pervading spell—

Mantra 85

तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम्

Therewith I caused him to partake; therewith I set him forward (again).

Mantra 86

एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः

This, verily, is the odana—complete in limbs, complete in joints, complete in body.

Mantra 87

सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद

All-limbed indeed, all-jointed, all-bodied—whole he becomes, who thus knoweth.

Mantra 88

३९॥ ततश्चैनमन्येन पृष्ठेन प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन्

Thereafter, with another (serving), with the back (side), shalt thou cause him to partake—wherewith the seers of old did partake of this.

Mantra 89

विद्युत् त्वा हनिष्यतीत्येनमाह

‘Lightning shall smite thee!’—so spake he unto him.

Mantra 90

तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम्

Him, verily, I—neither turned hitherward, nor turned away, nor turned back against (me).

दिवा पृष्ठेन

By day, with (its) back (as support/cover).

Mantra 92

तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम्

Therewith I made him eat; therewith I made him go forth (set him in motion).

Mantra 93

एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः

This, verily, is the Odana—complete in every limb, complete in every joint, complete in the whole body.

Mantra 94

सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद

All-limbed indeed, all-jointed, all-bodied—wholly he becomes, who thus knoweth.

Mantra 95

४०॥ ततश्चैनमन्येनोरसा प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन्

Thereafter with another breast thou didst cause him to partake, even with that whereby the ancient Seers partook of this same.

Mantra 96

कृष्या न रात्स्यसीत्येनमाह

‘Thou shalt not yield him up for ploughing’: thus he addressed him.

तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम्

Him, verily, I—neither hither-turned, nor away-turned, nor back-turned—

पृथिव्योरसा

With the bosom of Earth.

Mantra 99

तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम्

Therewith I caused him to partake; therewith I made him go forth (I conducted him).

Mantra 100

एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः

This, verily, is the boiled oblation-food—complete in every limb, complete in every joint, complete in the whole body.

Mantra 101

सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद

Complete in every limb—yea, complete in every joint, complete in the whole body—he comes wholly to be, who knoweth thus.

Mantra 102

४१॥ ततश्चैनमन्येनोदरेण प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन्

Thereafter thou didst cause him to eat with another belly, even that whereby the seers of old ate this same (food).

Mantra 103

उदरदारस्त्वा हनिष्यतीत्येनमाह

‘The Belly-tearer will smite thee’: thus did he say unto him.

Mantra 104

तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम्

Him, verily, I (suffer) not—neither coming hitherward, nor going forthward, nor turning back toward (me).

Mantra 105

सत्येनोदरेण

By Truth, with the belly (as instrument of assimilation).

Mantra 106

तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम्

Therewith I caused him to eat; therewith I led him onward (to his attainment).

Mantra 107

एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः

This, verily, the Odana is all-limbed, all-jointed, all-bodied.

सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद

All-limbed indeed, all-jointed, all-bodied, wholly he becomes—who thus knoweth.

Mantra 109

४२॥ ततश्चैनमन्येन वस्तिना प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन्

Thereafter, with another vessel shalt thou cause him to partake—wherewith, moreover, the seers of old caused this man to partake.

Mantra 110

अप्सु मरिष्यसीत्येनमाह

‘In the waters shalt thou perish’: thus he addresseth him.

Mantra 111

तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम्

Him, verily, I make neither hitherward, nor awayward, nor returning back.

समुद्रेण वस्तिना

With the ocean as covering.

Mantra 113

तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम्

Therewith I made him eat; therewith I made him go forth.

एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः

This, verily, is the rice-porridge—complete in every limb, complete in every joint, complete in all the body.

Whole-limbed indeed—complete in every joint, complete in all his body—he comes to be, whoso thus knoweth.

Mantra 116

४३॥ ततश्चैनमन्याभ्यामूरुभ्यां प्राशीर्याभ्यां चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन्

Thereafter, with the other pair of thighs—with the twain to be rent away—this man the ancient Seers did wholly consume.

Mantra 117

ऊरू ते मरिष्यत इत्येनमाह

‘Thy two thighs shall perish’: thus spake he unto him.

Mantra 118

तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम्

Him, verily, I—neither hitherward, nor awayward, nor counterward—[do I set/allow].

मित्रावरुणयोरूरुभ्याम्

With the two thighs of Mitra and Varuṇa.

Mantra 120

ताभ्यामेनं प्राशिषं ताभ्यामेनमजीगमम्

With those twain I made him eat; with those twain I made him go forth (to his appointed condition).

एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः

This, verily, is the odana: all-limbed, all-jointed, of entire body.

सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद

All-limbed indeed, all-jointed, of entire body, he comes wholly to be—whoso thus knoweth.

४४॥ ततश्चैनमन्याभ्यामष्ठीवद्भ्यां प्राशीर्याभ्यां चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन्

Thereafter, with other twain, with the two that have bones, thou shalt make him eat—wherewith, moreover, the seers of old did eat this (portion).

स्रामो भविष्यसीत्येनमाह

‘Hale shalt thou become’—thus unto him he saith.

Mantra 125

तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम्

Him verily I (set) neither facing hither, nor facing away, nor facing back again.

Mantra 126

त्वष्टुरष्ठीवद्भ्याम्

With Tvaṣṭṛ’s two bone-endowed (supports).

ताभ्यामेनं प्राशिषं ताभ्यामेनमजीगमम्

With those twain I caused him to eat; with those twain I made him go onward.

४५॥ ततश्चैनमन्याभ्यां पादाभ्यां प्राशीर्याभ्यां चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन्

Thereafter with the other pair of Feet thou didst feed him—those wherewith the ancient Seers fed this man of old.
