Soma Pavamāna (the purified Soma)

This Pavamāna Soma hymn celebrates Soma’s pressing and purification as he streams through the filter into the bowls, becoming fit to mingle with the gods. It repeatedly portrays Soma as a vigilant, chanting, priestly power who enters the bright dwelling of sacrifice and brings increase—cattle, strength, and ordered prosperity. The hymn also widens the blessing by invoking allied cosmic supports (Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi, Heaven and Earth) to stabilize the gains bestowed through Soma.

Mantra 1

अस्य प्रेषा हेमना पूयमानो देवो देवेभिः समपृक्त रसम् । सुतः पवित्रं पर्येति रेभन्मितेव सद्म पशुमान्ति होता ॥

By his impulsion and golden force, the God Soma, being purified, blends his delighting essence with the Gods. Pressed out, he moves around the filter, chanting; like one measured and sure, he enters the luminous home rich in the herds—he, the priest of the inner offering.

Mantra 2

भद्रा वस्त्रा समन्या वसानो महान्कविर्निवचनानि शंसन् । आ वच्यस्व चम्वोः पूयमानो विचक्षणो जागृविर्देववीतौ ॥

Clothed in auspicious and harmonious raiment, the great seer proclaims the inward utterances. Being purified, become speakable upon the bowls; the discerning, ever-wakeful one moves in the winning of the Gods.

Mantra 3

समु प्रियो मृज्यते सानो अव्ये यशस्तरो यशसां क्षैतो अस्मे । अभि स्वर धन्वा पूयमानो यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥

The beloved is cleansed upon the woolly ridge; more glorious, he shines for us among the glorious. Purifying himself, he cries out with a clear call across the wide expanse; may you protect us always with states of well-being.

Mantra 4

प्र गायताभ्यर्चाम देवान्त्सोमं हिनोत महते धनाय । स्वादुः पवाते अति वारमव्यमा सीदाति कलशं देवयुर्नः ॥

Sing forth; let us chant to the Gods—drive Soma onward for the great plenitude. Sweet he streams beyond the woolly strainer and comes to rest in the jar, our seeker and lover of the Divine.

Mantra 5

इन्दुर्देवानामुप सख्यमायन्त्सहस्रधारः पवते मदाय । नृभिः स्तवानो अनु धाम पूर्वमगन्निन्द्रं महते सौभगाय ॥

The bright drop comes to the friendship of the Gods; thousand-streamed he purifies himself for ecstasy. Praised by the strong ones, he goes according to the ancient stations and reaches Indra for a great felicity.

Mantra 6

स्तोत्रे राये हरिरर्षा पुनान इन्द्रं मदो गच्छतु ते भराय । देवैर्याहि सरथं राधो अच्छा यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥

For the hymn and for plenitude, O tawny one, stream on as you purify; let your ecstasy go to Indra for his bearing of power. Go with the Gods in one chariot toward the gift of delight; and may you protect us always with well-being.

Mantra 7

प्र काव्यमुशनेव ब्रुवाणो देवो देवानां जनिमा विवक्ति । महिव्रतः शुचिबन्धुः पावकः पदा वराहो अभ्येति रेभन् ॥

He speaks the inspired word like Uśanā; the God reveals the births of the Gods. Great in will, kin to the pure, the purifier—chanting—moves forward like a boar with his step, breaking through to the goal.

Mantra 8

प्र हंसासस्तृपलं मन्युमच्छामादस्तं वृषगणा अयासुः । आङ्गूष्यं पवमानं सखायो दुर्मर्षं साकं प्र वदन्ति वाणम् ॥

The swan-powers drive forward the triple force of ardor toward its home; the bull-companies have come to the goal. The comrades together utter the voice of the purifying one—full of inspired song, hard to withstand.

Mantra 11

अध धारया मध्वा पृचानस्तिरो रोम पवते अद्रिदुग्धः । इन्दुरिन्द्रस्य सख्यं जुषाणो देवो देवस्य मत्सरो मदाय ॥

Then, mingling with the stream of honeyed delight, he flows over the hairs (the filtering fleece), milked from the pressing-stone. The bright drop, accepting Indra’s friendship, the god who is the rapture of the god, becomes an impelling intoxication for ecstasy.

Mantra 16

जुष्ट्वी न इन्दो सुपथा सुगान्युरौ पवस्व वरिवांसि कृण्वन् । घनेव विष्वग्दुरितानि विघ्नन्नधि ष्णुना धन्व सानो अव्ये ॥

O Indu, consenting to us, purify yourself in the wide: making for us good paths and easy goings. Like a smiting hammer, shatter the difficulties on every side; press on with your drive upon the woolly ridge.

Mantra 17

वृष्टिं नो अर्ष दिव्यां जिगत्नुमिळावतीं शंगयीं जीरदानुम् । स्तुकेव वीता धन्वा विचिन्वन्बन्धूँरिमाँ अवराँ इन्दो वायून् ॥

Flow for us the divine rain of force, swiftly reaching its goal—rich in inspired illumination, bringing wellbeing, granting the eager giving. Like a driven missile, range out, O Indu, discerning and gathering these lower energies and currents, to be uplifted into the right movement.

Mantra 18

ग्रन्थिं न वि ष्य ग्रथितं पुनान ऋजुं च गातुं वृजिनं च सोम । अत्यो न क्रदो हरिरा सृजानो मर्यो देव धन्व पस्त्यावान् ॥

As one loosens a knot, loosen what is entangled while you purify yourself, O Soma; make clear both the straight path and the crooked. Like a neighing stallion, the tawny force is released—run forth, O divine youth, rich in the home of the being.

Mantra 20

अरश्मानो येऽरथा अयुक्ता अत्यासो न ससृजानास आजौ । एते शुक्रासो धन्वन्ति सोमा देवासस्ताँ उप याता पिबध्यै ॥

These are like chariots without reins, yoked and loosed like steeds in the contest; the bright Somās race onward. O Gods, come near to these and drink—take into you this clarified force in its victorious movement.

Mantra 22

तक्षद्यदी मनसो वेनतो वाग्ज्येष्ठस्य वा धर्मणि क्षोरनीके । आदीमायन्वरमा वावशाना जुष्टं पतिं कलशे गाव इन्दुम् ॥

When the Word, moved by the desiring mind, fashions him in the law of the supreme, in the shining face of the milk, then the seeking powers come to him, yearning for the boon: the rays (cows) in the vessel take the beloved lord, the Indu, into the jar.

Mantra 23

प्र दानुदो दिव्यो दानुपिन्व ऋतमृताय पवते सुमेधाः । धर्मा भुवद्वृजन्यस्य राजा प्र रश्मिभिर्दशभिर्भारि भूम ॥

Forward moves the divine giver and increaser of the streams; the clear-minded one flows as Truth for the Truth. He becomes the Law, the king of the active field, and goes forth with ten rays—vast in his bearing.

Mantra 24

पवित्रेभिः पवमानो नृचक्षा राजा देवानामुत मर्त्यानाम् । द्विता भुवद्रयिपती रयीणामृतं भरत्सुभृतं चार्विन्दुः ॥

Purifying himself through the filters, the seer of men becomes king of the gods and of mortals. In a double way he becomes lord of plenitudes; the lovely Indu bears the well-held Truth into us.

Mantra 25

अर्वाँ इव श्रवसे सातिमच्छेन्द्रस्य वायोरभि वीतिमर्ष । स नः सहस्रा बृहतीरिषो दा भवा सोम द्रविणोवित्पुनानः ॥

Like a swift steed for fame, flow toward the winning, toward the welcoming of Indra and Vāyu. Give us a thousand vast impulsions of increase; become for us, O Soma, the finder of the true riches, as you purify yourself.

Mantra 29

शतं धारा देवजाता असृग्रन्त्सहस्रमेनाः कवयो मृजन्ति । इन्दो सनित्रं दिव आ पवस्व पुरएतासि महतो धनस्य ॥

A hundred streams, born of the divine, are released; a thousand stains the seers cleanse away. O Indu, purify yourself into the treasury of heaven; you are the forerunner of the great riches of being.

Mantra 32

कनिक्रददनु पन्थामृतस्य शुक्रो वि भास्यमृतस्य धाम । स इन्द्राय पवसे मत्सरवान्हिन्वानो वाचं मतिभिः कवीनाम् ॥

Crying out, you move along the path of the Truth; shining, you blaze forth the home of immortality. For Indra you purify yourself, full of ecstasy, urging the Word with the insights of the seers.

Mantra 33

दिव्यः सुपर्णोऽव चक्षि सोम पिन्वन्धाराः कर्मणा देववीतौ । एन्दो विश कलशं सोमधानं क्रन्दन्निहि सूर्यस्योप रश्मिम् ॥

O Soma, the divine fair-winged looks down; swelling the streams by the work in the god-attended rite. O Indu, enter the jar that holds Soma; crying aloud, come to the ray of the Sun—rise into the solar line of illumination.

Mantra 35

सोमं गावो धेनवो वावशानाः सोमं विप्रा मतिभिः पृच्छमानाः । सोमः सुतः पूयते अज्यमानः सोमे अर्कास्त्रिष्टुभः सं नवन्ते ॥

The Rays (cows) and the fostering powers (milch-kine) cry out for Soma; the illumined seers seek Soma with their thought-movements. Soma, expressed, is purified as he is anointed; in Soma the hymns—Trishtubh measures—press together and become new-born.

Mantra 36

एवा नः सोम परिषिच्यमान आ पवस्व पूयमानः स्वस्ति । इन्द्रमा विश बृहता रवेण वर्धया वाचं जनया पुरंधिम् ॥

So, for us, O Soma—being poured all around—flow here purified for well-being. Enter Indra with your vast resounding; increase our word of power, bring forth the plenitude that bears and fills.

Mantra 37

आ जागृविर्विप्र ऋता मतीनां सोमः पुनानो असदच्चमूषु । सपन्ति यं मिथुनासो निकामा अध्वर्यवो रथिरासः सुहस्ताः ॥

Awake and vigilant, the seer of the true order of thoughts—Soma, purifying—has sat in the bowls. Him the priests, paired in harmony and intent, speed onward—skilled in the rite, swift as charioteers, with hands that know the work.

Mantra 38

स पुनान उप सूरे न धातोभे अप्रा रोदसी वि ष आवः । प्रिया चिद्यस्य प्रियसास ऊती स तू धनं कारिणे न प्र यंसत् ॥

He, purifying, like a founder near the Sun, has spread wide the two worlds, filling them apart. Even what is dear—his dear helpers and protections—he does not withhold; he grants the treasure to the doer of the work.

Mantra 39

स वर्धिता वर्धनः पूयमानः सोमो मीढ्वाँ अभि नो ज्योतिषावीत् । येना नः पूर्वे पितरः पदज्ञाः स्वर्विदो अभि गा अद्रिमुष्णन् ॥

He, increased and increaser, Soma being purified, the bountiful, has come to us with light. By him our ancient Fathers, knowers of the path, finders of the Sun-world, won the Rays (cows) by breaking open the stone.

Mantra 40

अक्रान्त्समुद्रः प्रथमे विधर्मञ्जनयन्प्रजा भुवनस्य राजा । वृषा पवित्रे अधि सानो अव्ये बृहत्सोमो वावृधे सुवान इन्दुः ॥

The ocean has advanced in the first establishing of the law, bringing forth the creatures, king of becoming. As a bull upon the filter, on the woollen ridge, the vast Soma has grown—Indu, being pressed into birth.

Mantra 41

महत्तत्सोमो महिषश्चकारापां यद्गर्भोऽवृणीत देवान् । अदधादिन्द्रे पवमान ओजोऽजनयत्सूर्ये ज्योतिरिन्दुः ॥

A great thing Soma the mighty has done: as the embryo of the waters he chose the gods. The purifying one placed strength in Indra; Indu brought forth light in the Sun.

Mantra 42

मत्सि वायुमिष्टये राधसे च मत्सि मित्रावरुणा पूयमानः । मत्सि शर्धो मारुतं मत्सि देवान्मत्सि द्यावापृथिवी देव सोम ॥

Rejoice in Vayu for our seeking and our fulfillment; rejoice in Mitra-Varuna as you are purified. Rejoice in the Marut host, rejoice in the gods; rejoice in Heaven-and-Earth, O divine Soma.

Mantra 43

ऋजुः पवस्व वृजिनस्य हन्तापामीवां बाधमानो मृधश्च । अभिश्रीणन्पयः पयसाभि गोनामिन्द्रस्य त्वं तव वयं सखायः ॥

Flow straight, O Soma, slayer of crookedness, driving away disease and hostile assault. Enrich the milk with milk, increase the rays of illumination; you are Indra’s— and we are your companions.

Mantra 44

मध्वः सूदं पवस्व वस्व उत्सं वीरं च न आ पवस्वा भगं च । स्वदस्वेन्द्राय पवमान इन्दो रयिं च न आ पवस्वा समुद्रात् ॥

Purify for us the sweet pressing, the wellspring of riches; purify for us the hero-force and also Bhaga (the distributor of bliss). Become sweet for Indra, O purifying Indu; and purify for us the rayi—fullness of being—from the ocean-depth.

Mantra 45

सोमः सुतो धारयात्यो न हित्वा सिन्धुर्न निम्नमभि वाज्यक्षाः । आ योनिं वन्यमसदत्पुनानः समिन्दुर्गोभिरसरत्समद्भिः ॥

Soma, pressed out, pours forth in the stream; like a swift steed he does not abandon the course, like a river he moves toward the deepening. Purifying himself, he settles into his own native womb (his source); the drop flows together with the rays of illumination (cows) and with the waters—uniting light and life in one current.

Mantra 46

एष स्य ते पवत इन्द्र सोमश्चमूषु धीर उशते तवस्वान् । स्वर्चक्षा रथिरः सत्यशुष्मः कामो न यो देवयतामसर्जि ॥

This Soma flows for thee, O Indra—wise and eager in the bowls, full of power. He is visioned by the light (sun-eyed), moving like a chariot, with a true and irresistible force; like Desire itself he is released for those who turn godward.

Mantra 47

एष प्रत्नेन वयसा पुनानस्तिरो वर्पांसि दुहितुर्दधानः । वसानः शर्म त्रिवरूथमप्सु होतेव याति समनेषु रेभन् ॥

This Soma, purifying himself with his ancient vitality, puts on the forms (powers) of the Daughter (the Waters). Clothing himself in a triple-protecting peace within the waters, he moves among the gatherings like a priest—chanting, establishing harmony in the assemblies of the being.

Mantra 48

नू नस्त्वं रथिरो देव सोम परि स्रव चम्वोः पूयमानः । अप्सु स्वादिष्ठो मधुमाँ ऋतावा देवो न यः सविता सत्यमन्मा ॥

Now for us, O divine Soma, chariot-moving, flow all around into the bowls, purifying thyself. In the waters thou art most sweet, full of honeyed delight, a knower of the Right; like Savitṛ, a god of true intention, thou awakenest the truth-mind in us.

Mantra 49

अभि वायुं वीत्यर्षा गृणानोऽभि मित्रावरुणा पूयमानः । अभी नरं धीजवनं रथेष्ठामभीन्द्रं वृषणं वज्रबाहुम् ॥

Flow forth toward Vāyu, to the feast of inspiration, while chanting—flow toward Mitra and Varuṇa as thou purifiest thyself. Flow toward Nara, swift with the driving thought, firm on the chariot-path; flow toward Indra, the strong Bull with the thunder-arm—so all the powers of right movement may be gathered in us.

Mantra 50

अभि वस्त्रा सुवसनान्यर्षाभि धेनूः सुदुघाः पूयमानः । अभि चन्द्रा भर्तवे नो हिरण्याभ्यश्वान्रथिनो देव सोम ॥

Flow toward the bright robes, the well-clad powers; flow toward the milch-cows that yield richly, while purifying thyself. Flow toward the shining treasures for our bearing, toward the golden plenitudes; and toward the swift horses and chariot-strengths, O divine Soma—granting the outer forms that support the inner advance.

Mantra 51

अभी नो अर्ष दिव्या वसून्यभि विश्वा पार्थिवा पूयमानः । अभि येन द्रविणमश्नवामाभ्यार्षेयं जमदग्निवन्नः ॥

Flow toward us with the heavenly riches; flow with all the earthly plenitudes, O purifying one. Flow with that by which we may attain the true substance of gain; flow to us with the seer-heritage, as Jamadagni’s line—so our being may inherit the inspired power.

Mantra 52

अया पवा पवस्वैना वसूनि माँश्चत्व इन्दो सरसि प्र धन्व । ब्रध्नश्चिदत्र वातो न जूतः पुरुमेधश्चित्तकवे नरं दात् ॥

By this path of purification, O Indu, purify thyself; with it drive forth these riches in the lake of being. Here even the bright one moves like a wind made swift; and even Purumēdha gives to the craftsman the hero-force—so may the inspired skill receive its manly power from the clarified delight.

Mantra 53

उत न एना पवया पवस्वाधि श्रुते श्रवाय्यस्य तीर्थे । षष्टिं सहस्रा नैगुतो वसूनि वृक्षं न पक्वं धूनवद्रणाय ॥

And for us, by this purification, purify thyself upon the famed ford, the crossing of what is worthy to be heard. Shake down for us the treasures—sixty thousand—like a ripe tree that drops its fruit for the battle: may the ripe abundance of the soul fall from above into our striving.

Mantra 54

महीमे अस्य वृषनाम शूषे माँश्चत्वे वा पृशने वा वधत्रे । अस्वापयन्निगुतः स्नेहयच्चापामित्राँ अपाचितो अचेतः ॥

Great indeed are these mighty powers of his force—whether in Māṃścatva or in Pṛśana or in the Vadhatra. He puts to sleep what is hidden, and makes it pliant; and he drives away the enemies—those unperceiving, unthinking movements—casting them out from us.

Mantra 55

सं त्री पवित्रा विततान्येष्यन्वेकं धावसि पूयमानः । असि भगो असि दात्रस्य दातासि मघवा मघवद्भ्य इन्दो ॥

Passing through the three outspread strainers, you run along the one path, O Soma, being purified. You are Bhaga, the power of delight and distribution; you are the giver of the gift, the opulent force that grants to the opulent, O Indu.

Mantra 56

एष विश्ववित्पवते मनीषी सोमो विश्वस्य भुवनस्य राजा । द्रप्साँ ईरयन्विदथेष्विन्दुर्वि वारमव्यं समयाति याति ॥

This Soma, the knower of the whole, streams forth with discerning will; he is king of all becoming. Sending out his luminous drops in the assemblies, Indu passes beyond, and also together with, the woolen filter—mastering the gates of release.

Mantra 57

इन्दुं रिहन्ति महिषा अदब्धाः पदे रेभन्ति कवयो न गृध्राः । हिन्वन्ति धीरा दशभिः क्षिपाभिः समञ्जते रूपमपां रसेन ॥

The strong, unbetrayed powers lick up the bright Indu; the seers cry out at the step like eager birds of vision. The steadfast ones impel him with ten swift strokes; they anoint his form with the sap of the waters.

Mantra 58

त्वया वयं पवमानेन सोम भरे कृतं वि चिनुयाम शश्वत् । तन्नो मित्रो वरुणो मामहन्तामदितिः सिन्धुः पृथिवी उत द्यौः ॥

With you, O Soma in purification, may we always gather and arrange the accomplished gain in the bearing of life. May Mitra and Varuṇa enlarge that for us—Aditi, the River of the flow, Earth and Heaven as well.
