Mantra 1

महाँ इन्द्रो य ओजसा पर्जन्यो वृष्टिमाँ इव । स्तोमैर्वत्सस्य वावृधे ॥

Great is Indra by his force, like Parjanya heavy with rain; by our hymns he increases, as the growing life within is nourished—so the power of illumination swells in the seeker.

Mantra 2

प्रजामृतस्य पिप्रतः प्र यद्भरन्त वह्नयः । विप्रा ऋतस्य वाहसा ॥

When the seers, bearers of the Truth, bring forward the fostering of the soul’s progeny in ṛta, they carry it onward by the true vehicle of the cosmic order—so the inner becoming is upheld by right law and inspired force.

Mantra 3

कण्वा इन्द्रं यदक्रत स्तोमैर्यज्ञस्य साधनम् । जामि ब्रुवत आयुधम् ॥

When the Kaṇvas fashioned Indra by hymns as the effective power of the sacrifice, they spoke as kin, forging a weapon of speech—mantra made sharp for the battle of light.

Mantra 4

समस्य मन्यवे विशो विश्वा नमन्त कृष्टयः । समुद्रायेव सिन्धवः ॥

To his divine ardour all peoples bow down, as rivers incline toward the ocean; so the many movements of life surrender to the one vast force when Indra’s will blazes in the being.

Mantra 5

ओजस्तदस्य तित्विष उभे यत्समवर्तयत् । इन्द्रश्चर्मेव रोदसी ॥

This is the force of his blazing energy: he made the two worlds turn and come together, Indra gathering Heaven and Earth as if into a single hide—so the consciousness is held in one firm embrace for the work of light.

Mantra 6

वि चिद्वृत्रस्य दोधतो वज्रेण शतपर्वणा । शिरो बिभेद वृष्णिना ॥

Even when Vṛtra heaved and resisted, Indra with the thunderbolt of a hundred joints split his head by the forceful power—so the obstruction in the subconscient is broken and the blocked currents are released for the truth’s advance.

Mantra 7

इमा अभि प्र णोनुमो विपामग्रेषु धीतयः । अग्नेः शोचिर्न दिद्युतः ॥

These inspirations we press forward and set in motion in the very forefront of the seers; they shine out like the flame of Agni—like a lightning of inner illumination.

Mantra 8

गुहा सतीरुप त्मना प्र यच्छोचन्त धीतयः । कण्वा ऋतस्य धारया ॥

Though lodged in the secret cave, the inspirations, by their own inner self-nature, press forward and begin to burn; the Kaṇvas (bring them) by the streaming current of Ṛta, the Truth-Order.

Mantra 9

प्र तमिन्द्र नशीमहि रयिं गोमन्तमश्विनम् । प्र ब्रह्म पूर्वचित्तये ॥

Forward to that Indra we would attain: the plenitude (rayi) rich in rays of Light and powers of swift force; forward (let) the mantra-word go, for the awakening of the ancient consciousness.

Mantra 10

अहमिद्धि पितुष्परि मेधामृतस्य जग्रभ । अहं सूर्य इवाजनि ॥

I indeed, from around the Father, have seized the wisdom of Ṛta; I am born like the Sun—rising into a clear, sovereign illumination.

Mantra 12

ये त्वामिन्द्र न तुष्टुवुॠषयो ये च तुष्टुवुः । ममेद्वर्धस्व सुष्टुतः ॥

Whether the seers have not praised you, or whether they have praised you—grow for me indeed, O Indra, when well hymned; increase your power in me as the answer to right utterance.

Mantra 13

यदस्य मन्युरध्वनीद्वि वृत्रं पर्वशो रुजन् । अपः समुद्रमैरयत् ॥

When his wrathful might drove forth, shattering Vṛtra limb by limb, he set the waters in motion—he stirred the oceanic fullness: the release of the pent-up currents of consciousness.

Mantra 14

नि शुष्ण इन्द्र धर्णसिं वज्रं जघन्थ दस्यवि । वृषा ह्युग्र शृण्विषे ॥

Upon Śuṣṇa, O Indra, you drove down the thunderbolt, slaying the Dasyu; for you are the Bull, the fierce one, to be heard and answered—irresistible in your force.

Mantra 15

न द्याव इन्द्रमोजसा नान्तरिक्षाणि वज्रिणम् । न विव्यचन्त भूमयः ॥

Neither the heavens by their might, nor the mid-worlds, nor the earth-foundations can encompass Indra the wielder of the thunderbolt; his force exceeds the measures of the worlds.

Mantra 17

य इमे रोदसी मही समीची समजग्रभीत् । तमोभिरिन्द्र तं गुहः ॥

He who seized together these two great Worlds, the Heaven and the Earth, drawing them into right facing—him, O Indra, you hid with darknesses: the concealed power waiting to be released into light.

Mantra 18

य इन्द्र यतयस्त्वा भृगवो ये च तुष्टुवुः । ममेदुग्र श्रुधी हवम् ॥

O Indra, the strivers (yatayaḥ), the Bhṛgus, and those who have praised you—hear my call indeed, O fierce one; let their ancient aspiration become active in me now.

Mantra 20

या इन्द्र प्रस्वस्त्वासा गर्भमचक्रिरन् । परि धर्मेव सूर्यम् ॥

O Indra, those forward-moving powers fashioned you as a wombed formation, as if enclosing the Sun within the law of right order—so that the Light may be held, protected, and made ready for manifestation in us.

Mantra 22

तवेदिन्द्र प्रणीतिषूत प्रशस्तिरद्रिवः । यज्ञो वितन्तसाय्यः ॥

O Indra, in your leadings indeed are praise and right direction, O wielder of the stone; and the sacrifice is spread out in its full extension—so the inner offering may travel safely to its goal.

Mantra 23

आ न इन्द्र महीमिषं पुरं न दर्षि गोमतीम् । उत प्रजां सुवीर्यम् ॥

Come to us, O Indra, with a vast nourishing force—like a stronghold rich in rays—and grant also the begetting of the soul’s true offspring and the plenitude of heroic energy.

उत त्यदाश्वश्व्यं यदिन्द्र नाहुषीष्वा । अग्रे विक्षु प्रदीदयत् ॥

And that swift, horse-born power—when, O Indra, among the Nahusha-peoples—you made it blaze forth in front among the clans: you kindle the leading light of progress in the human collectivity.

यदङ्ग तविषीयस इन्द्र प्रराजसि क्षितीः । महाँ अपार ओजसा ॥

When, O Indra, you become more vehement in might and rule forth over the habitations, you are the Great One—boundless in your force; you widen the field of the soul’s mastery by sheer power of being.

Mantra 27

तं त्वा हविष्मतीर्विश उप ब्रुवत ऊतये । उरुज्रयसमिन्दुभिः ॥

To you, the bearer of the wide-streaming force, the offering-bearing peoples call near for protection—bringing the Soma-drops: they summon the power that makes the path broad and swift for the soul’s advance.

Mantra 28

उपह्वरे गिरीणां संगथे च नदीनाम् । धिया विप्रो अजायत ॥

In the near-folds of the mountains and at the confluence of the rivers, the seer is born by the power of vision: inspiration arises where heights and flowing currents meet in the soul.

Mantra 29

अतः समुद्रमुद्वतश्चिकित्वाँ अव पश्यति । यतो विपान एजति ॥

From here the knower looks down upon the ocean and the upsurging heights, from where the drinking one trembles into movement: the awakened consciousness surveys the vastness and the ascent, and discerns the source of the soul’s stirred delight.

Mantra 30

आदित्प्रत्नस्य रेतसो ज्योतिष्पश्यन्ति वासरम् । परो यदिध्यते दिवा ॥

Then indeed they behold the day by the light of the ancient seed, when it is kindled beyond in heaven: the primal potency ignites a higher radiance, and the soul recognizes the true dawn of consciousness.

Mantra 31

कण्वास इन्द्र ते मतिं विश्वे वर्धन्ति पौंस्यम् । उतो शविष्ठ वृष्ण्यम् ॥

The Kaṇvas, O Indra, all strengthen your inspired thought—your manly power; and also, O most forceful, your virile might: by our increasing of the divine intention, the victorious energy grows in us.

Mantra 32

इमां म इन्द्र सुष्टुतिं जुषस्व प्र सु मामव । उत प्र वर्धया मतिम् ॥

O Indra, accept this well-shaped hymn of mine; strongly foster me. And also increase the power of my thought (mati), so it can hold and express the truth-force.

Mantra 33

उत ब्रह्मण्या वयं तुभ्यं प्रवृद्ध वज्रिवः । विप्रा अतक्ष्म जीवसे ॥

And we, lovers of the brahman (the soul’s shaping word), O Vajrin, have fashioned for thee—O ever-increasing One—a luminous utterance, for our living: for the growth of the inner life-force in truth.

Mantra 34

अभि कण्वा अनूषतापो न प्रवता यतीः । इन्द्रं वनन्वती मतिः ॥

The Kaṇvas have cried out toward him, as waters that run by the slope; their inspired thought, seeking to win Indra, flows straight to his power—like a current of consciousness toward its luminous source.

Mantra 35

इन्द्रमुक्थानि वावृधुः समुद्रमिव सिन्धवः । अनुत्तमन्युमजरम् ॥

The strong recitations have increased Indra, as rivers swell the ocean. He is the one whose ardour none surpasses, the ageless power—ever victorious in the battle for light.

Mantra 36

आ नो याहि परावतो हरिभ्यां हर्यताभ्याम् । इममिन्द्र सुतं पिब ॥

Come to us from the far places, O Indra, with thy two bright tawny powers (the Haris). Drink this pressed Soma: let the delight of the luminous draught awaken victorious force in us.

Mantra 37

त्वामिद्वृत्रहन्तम जनासो वृक्तबर्हिषः । हवन्ते वाजसातये ॥

It is thee indeed, the mightiest slayer of the coverer, that the peoples with the well-spread sacred seat call—so that we may win vāja, the plenitude of force and victorious accomplishment.

Mantra 38

अनु त्वा रोदसी उभे चक्रं न वर्त्येतशम् । अनु सुवानास इन्दवः ॥

After thee move both Heaven and Earth, like a wheel’s turning with the swift steed; after thee follow the Soma-drops as they are pressed—powers of delight that run in thy train and feed thy victory.

Mantra 39

मन्दस्वा सु स्वर्णर उतेन्द्र शर्यणावति । मत्स्वा विवस्वतो मती ॥

Become blissful, O Indra, O hero of the luminous heaven; and in the abundance of śaryaṇā, take joy. Be intoxicated with the inspired thought of the radiant one (Vivasvat): let that light-born vision make thee active in us.

Mantra 40

वावृधान उप द्यवि वृषा वज्र्यरोरवीत् । वृत्रहा सोमपातमः ॥

Growing ever more, the Bull with the thunderbolt has roared up toward heaven. The slayer of the coverer, the most perfect drinker of Soma—he rises in might to break the inner obstruction.

Mantra 41

ऋषिर्हि पूर्वजा अस्येक ईशान ओजसा । इन्द्र चोष्कूयसे वसु ॥

For thou art indeed the seer, born before all, the one lord by thy might. O Indra, thou dost set in motion (and bring near) the Vasus—powers of substance and right plenty—for the establishing of a richer being.

Mantra 42

अस्माकं त्वा सुताँ उप वीतपृष्ठा अभि प्रयः । शतं वहन्तु हरयः ॥

To our pressed Soma-joys we call you near; let your bright-backed powers (the tawny steeds of Force) bear you a hundredfold toward the offering—so the Delight may be fulfilled in us.

Mantra 43

इमां सु पूर्व्यां धियं मधोर्घृतस्य पिप्युषीम् । कण्वा उक्थेन वावृधुः ॥

This ancient inspiration—filled with the sweetness and the clarified light—have the Kaṇvas increased by the word of revelation, so the thought may grow into its plenary delight.

Mantra 44

इन्द्रमिद्विमहीनां मेधे वृणीत मर्त्यः । इन्द्रं सनिष्युरूतये ॥

Indra alone the mortal chooses in the great striving of understanding; for it is Indra whom he would win for the help that brings deliverance.

Mantra 45

अर्वाञ्चं त्वा पुरुष्टुत प्रियमेधस्तुता हरी । सोमपेयाय वक्षतः ॥

Toward us, O much-praised, let your two tawny powers draw you—praised by the dear intelligence—so you may drink the Soma of delight here in the human vessel.

Mantra 46

शतमहं तिरिन्दिरे सहस्रं पर्शावा ददे । राधांसि याद्वानाम् ॥

A hundred I gave at Tirindira, a thousand at Parśāva—gifts of plenitude to the Yādvas: powers of increase bestowed when the inner victory is established.

Mantra 47

त्रीणि शतान्यर्वतां सहस्रा दश गोनाम् । ददुष्पज्राय साम्ने ॥

Three hundreds of steeds, ten thousands of rays (cows of light) they gave—to Pajra for the chant: the outer gift mirrors the inner release of force and illumination.

Mantra 48

उदानट् ककुहो दिवमुष्ट्राञ्चतुर्युजो ददत् । श्रवसा याद्वं जनम् ॥

Kakuha rose up to heaven, giving camels yoked fourfold; by the power of fame he uplifted the Yādva people—an image of ascent through generous force and widening renown.
