३१। स मृत्योः पड्वीशात् पाशान्मा मोचि

Mantra 105
३२। तस्येदं वर्चस्तेजः प्राणमायुर्नि वेष्टयामीदमेनमधराञ्चं पादयामि
With this I wrap about him lustre and fiery vigor, breath and length of days; with this I press him (the evil) downward, I make it go beneath.
Primarily it is abhicārika (subjugation/binding): it restrains the rival and prevents release. Its prosperity tone is secondary—goods like tejas, cattle, and progeny are claimed for the patron as part of victory.
In many Atharvanic hymns, powers such as sacred speech (brahman), radiance/vigor (tejas), and cosmic-legal order (ṛta) function as operative forces. The hymn invokes them because they authorize dominance and make social outcomes ‘stick.’
It is a ritual-legal binding idea: the rival remains constrained by the moral and contractual order upheld by Mitra–Varuṇa. In performance, a cord/noose may be tightened or looped to enact that the opponent’s agency and escape are restricted.
