Kāṇḍa 16 is predominantly abhicārika: coercive charms that bind and restrain enemies, neutralize hostile speech, and repel or reverse harmful agencies.
In Atharvavedic thought, hostile speech—curse, slander, accusation—can function as an effective attack. The hymns therefore aim to silence, bind, or turn back such vāc to protect reputation, safety, and standing.
Although its methods are coercive, the stated goals are often protective and social: preventing harm, securing authority, and ensuring prosperity by restraining adversaries and their unseen supports.
