Dhṛtarāṣṭra questions Sañjaya about the midnight confrontation between Karṇa and the rākṣasa Ghaṭotkaca, requesting a precise account of the rākṣasa’s form, chariot, banner, horses, armor, and weaponry. Sañjaya supplies an almost catalog-like portrayal of Ghaṭotkaca’s fearsome physiognomy and ornaments, then describes his chariot’s features, standard, and driver. The narrative shifts to the tactical exchange: both combatants obscure the directions with dense volleys, sustaining a prolonged night-battle marked by mutual wounding and psychological impact on surrounding troops. Ghaṭotkaca deploys successive māyā-configurations—weapon-rains, transformations into mountain and storm-cloud forms, disappearances and reappearances, and the summoning of terrifying beings—to disorient the Kaurava side. Karṇa counters with composure and astric responses, breaking māyā constructs, striking down supporting forces, and neutralizing major projectiles (including a formidable aśani-like weapon) through agility and counter-throw. The chapter culminates with Ghaṭotkaca, his illusions disrupted, issuing a direct threat to Karṇa and then withdrawing (antaradhāna), leaving the engagement unresolved in this unit but narratively emphasizing Karṇa’s resilience under extraordinary conditions.
Chapter Arc: धृतराष्ट्र, युद्धभूमि की धूल और शोक के बीच, संजय से पूछते हैं—जब दोनों पक्ष युद्ध को उद्यत थे, तब कर्ण के वाग्बाणों से आहत और रथहीन भीमसेन ने क्या किया? → संजय बताता है कि भीम, कर्ण की कटु वाणी से तिलमिलाकर अर्जुन (फाल्गुन) से बोल उठता है—कर्ण ने उसे बार-बार ‘निमूछिया’, ‘मूढ़’, ‘औदरिक’ और ‘अकृतास्त्र’ कहकर अपमानित किया; यह अपमान केवल भीम का नहीं, पाण्डव-प्रतिष्ठा का भी है। भीम का क्रोध अर्जुन की प्रतिज्ञा को और तीखा करता है—कर्णपुत्र (कर्ण) के वध का संकल्प स्पष्ट होता जाता है। → अर्जुन के भीतर प्रतिज्ञा का ज्वार उठता है—वह घोषणा करता है कि कर्णसुत के वध की प्रतिज्ञा वह निभाएगा; वह ऐसा पुरुष नहीं देखता जो संकल्प को धारण कर फिर उसे छोड़ दे। युद्धभूमि में बाणों से छिन्न-भिन्न हाथियों और वीरों का दृश्य इस प्रतिज्ञा को रक्त-यथार्थ में बदल देता है। → अध्याय का अंत प्रतिज्ञा-पूर्ति की दिशा में स्थिरता देता है—अर्जुन माधव (कृष्ण) के प्रति कृतज्ञ होकर स्वीकार करता है कि उनकी कृपा के बिना यह दुस्तर प्रतिज्ञा पार नहीं हो सकती थी; संकल्प, सहायता और धर्म-बल का त्रिकोण स्थापित होता है। → कर्ण-वध की प्रतिज्ञा अब केवल वचन नहीं, निकट आती नियति है—अगला चरण यह तय करेगा कि यह संकल्प किस मूल्य पर पूरा होगा।
Verse 1
धृतराष्ट्रने पूछा--संजय! जब पाण्डवपक्षके और मेरे शूरवीर सैनिक पूर्वोक्तरूपसे युद्धके लिये उद्यत हो गये, तब भीमसेनने क्या किया? यह मुझे बताओ
Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: “Sañjaya, when the warriors of the Pāṇḍava side and my own heroic troops had, as described earlier, readied themselves for battle, what did Bhīmasena do then? Tell me this.”
Verse 2
संजय उवाच विरथो भीमसेनो वै कर्णवाक्ृशल्यपीडित: । अमर्षवशमापन्न: फाल्गुनं वाक्यमब्रवीत्,संजयने कहा--राजन्! रथहीन भीमसेन कर्णके वाग्बाणोंसे पीड़ित हो अमर्षके वशीभूत हो गये थे। वे अर्जुनसे इस प्रकार बोले--
Sañjaya said: Bhīmasena, now without his chariot and tormented by Karṇa’s barbed words that struck like a spear, fell under the sway of fierce indignation. Overcome by wounded pride and anger, he addressed Phālguna (Arjuna) with these words.
Verse 3
पुन: पुनस्तूबरक मूढ औदरिकेति च । अकृतास्त्रक मा योत्सीर्बाल संग्रामकातर,“धनंजय! कर्णने तुम्हारे सामने ही मुझसे बारंबार कहा है कि “अरे! तू निमूछिया, मूर्ख, पेटू, अस्त्रविद्याको न जाननेवाला, बालक और संग्रामभीरु है; अतः युद्ध न कर।” भारत! जो ऐसा कह दे, वह मेरा वध्य होता है। उसने मुझे ऐसा कह दिया
Sañjaya said: “Again and again Karṇa spoke to me, right in your presence, Dhanañjaya: ‘Hey you beardless one, you fool, you glutton, you who have not mastered weapons—childish and frightened of battle—do not fight!’ O Bhārata, whoever speaks to me in such a way becomes fit to be slain by me; and he has spoken to me so.”
Verse 4
इति मामब्रवीत् कर्ण: पश्यतस्ते धनंजय । एवं वक्ता च मे वध्यस्तेन चोक्तो5स्मि भारत,“धनंजय! कर्णने तुम्हारे सामने ही मुझसे बारंबार कहा है कि “अरे! तू निमूछिया, मूर्ख, पेटू, अस्त्रविद्याको न जाननेवाला, बालक और संग्रामभीरु है; अतः युद्ध न कर।” भारत! जो ऐसा कह दे, वह मेरा वध्य होता है। उसने मुझे ऐसा कह दिया
Sañjaya said: “Thus did Karṇa speak to me, O Dhanañjaya, while you looked on. And, O Bhārata, whoever addresses me in such a manner becomes one who deserves to be slain by me; he has spoken so to me.”
Verse 5
एतद् व्रतं महाबाहो त्वया सह कृतं मया । तथैतन्मम कौन्तेय यथा तव न संशय:
Sañjaya said: “O mighty-armed one, this vow was undertaken by me together with you. O son of Kuntī, it stands for me exactly as it stands for you—let there be no doubt about it.”
Verse 6
“महाबाहु कुन्तीकुमार! ऐसा कहनेवालेके वधकी यह प्रतिज्ञा मैंने तुम्हारे साथ ही की थी। यह कर्णका वध जैसे मेरा कार्य है, वैसे ही तुम्हारा भी है, इसमें संशय नहीं है ।। तद्गधाय नरश्रेष्ठ स्मरैतद् वचनं मम । यथा भवति तत् सत्यं तथा कुरु धनंजय,“नरश्रेष्ठी कर्णके वधके लिये तुम मेरे इस कथनपर भी ध्यान दो। धनंजय! जैसे भी मेरी वह प्रतिज्ञा सत्य हो सके, वैसा प्रयत्न करो'
Sañjaya said: “Therefore, O best of men, keep my words firmly in mind. O Dhanañjaya, act in such a way that my vow becomes true.”
Verse 7
तच्छुत्वा वचन तस्य भीमस्यामितविक्रम: । ततोअर्जुनो5ब्रवीत् कर्ण किंचिदभ्येत्य संयुगे,भीमसेनका यह वचन सुनकर अमित पराक्रमी अर्जुन युद्धस्थलमें कर्णके कुछ निकट जाकर उससे इस प्रकार बोले--
Sañjaya said: Hearing those words of Bhīma, Arjuna—of immeasurable prowess—then moved a little closer to Karṇa on the battlefield and addressed him.
Verse 8
कर्ण कर्ण वृथादृष्टे सूतपुत्रात्मसंस्तुत । अधर्मबुद्धे शृणु मे यत् त्वां वक्ष्यामि साम्प्रतम्,“कर्ण! कर्ण! तेरी दृष्टि मिथ्या है। सूतपुत्र! तू स्वयं ही अपनी प्रशंसा करता है। अधर्मबुद्धे! मैं इस समय तुझसे जो कुछ कहता हूँ, उसे सुन
Sañjaya said: “O Karṇa, Karṇa—your vision is vain and misguided. O son of a charioteer, you are one who praises himself. O man whose mind has turned toward adharma, listen now to what I am about to tell you.”
Verse 9
द्विविधं कर्म शूराणां युद्धे जयपराजयौ । तौ चाप्यनित्यौ राधेय वासवस्यापि युध्यत:,'राधानन्दन! युद्धमें शूरवीरोंके दो प्रकारके कर्म (परिणाम) देखे जाते हैं--जय और पराजय। यदि इन्द्र भी युद्ध करें तो उनके लिये भी वे दोनों परिणाम अनिश्ित हैं (अर्थात् यह निश्चित नहीं कि कब किसकी विजय होगी और कब किसकी पराजय)
Sañjaya said: “In battle, the outcomes that befall the valiant are of two kinds—victory and defeat. And even these are not fixed, O son of Rādhā; even for Vāsava (Indra) were he to fight, victory and defeat would remain uncertain.”
Verse 10
(रणमुत्सृज्य निर्लज्ज गच्छसे वै पुनः पुन: । माहात्म्यं पश्य भीमस्य कर्ण जन्म कुले तथा ।। नोक्तवान् परुषं यत् त्वां पलायनपरायणम् | 'ओ निर्लज्ज कर्ण! तू बार-बार युद्ध छोड़कर भाग जाता है, तो भी तुझ भागते हुएके प्रति भीमसेनने कोई कटु वचन नहीं कहा। भीमसेनके इस माहात्म्यको और उनके उत्तम कुलमें जन्म लेनेके कारण प्राप्त हुए अच्छे शील-स्वभावको प्रत्यक्ष देख ले। भूयस्त्वमपि सड्भरम्य सकृदेव यदृच्छया ।। विरथं कृतवान् वीरं पाण्डवं सूतदायद । कुलस्य सदृशं चापि राधेय कृतवानसि ।। 'सूतपूत्र! फिर तूने भी पुनः युद्ध करके केवल एक ही बार दैवेच्छासे पाण्डुपुत्र वीरवर भीमसेनको रथहीन किया है। राधापुत्र! तूने भीमको कटु॒ुवचन सुनाकर अपने कुलके अनुरूप कार्य किया है। त्वमिदानीं नरश्रेष्ठ प्रस्तुतं नावबुध्यसे । शृगाल इव वन्न्यान् वै क्षत्रं त्वमवमन्यसे ।। पित्र्यं कर्मास्य संग्रामस्तव तस्य कुलोचितम् । नरश्रेष्ठत इस समय जो संकट तेरे सामने प्रस्तुत है, उसे तू नहीं जानता है। जैसे सियार जंगली व्याप्र आदि जन्तुओंकी अवहेलना करे, उसी प्रकार तू भी क्षत्रियममाजका अपमान कर रहा है। संग्राम भीमसेनका तो पैतृक कर्म है और तेरा काम तेरे कुलके अनुरूप रथ हाँकना है। अहं त्वामपि राधेय ब्रवीमि रणमूर्थनि ।। सर्वशस्त्रभृतां मध्ये कुरु कार्याणि सर्वश: । नैकान्तसिद्धि: संग्रामे वासवस्यापि विद्यते ।।) 'राधापुत्र! मैं इस युद्धके मुहानेपर सम्पूर्ण शस्त्रधारी योद्धाओंके बीचमें तुझसे कहे देता हूँ, तू अपने सारे कार्य सब प्रकारसे पूर्ण कर ले। संग्राममें इन्द्रको भी एकानातः सिद्धि नहीं प्राप्त होती। मुमूर्षुर्युयुधानेन विरथो विकलेन्द्रिय: । मद्व ध्यस्त्वमिति ज्ञात्वा जित्वा जीवन विसर्जित:,'सात्यकिने तुझे रथहीन करके मृत्युके निकट पहुँचा दिया था। तेरी सारी इन्द्रियाँ व्याकुल हो उठी थीं, तो भी “तू मेरा वध्य है” यह जानकर उन्होंने तुझे जीतकर भी जीवित छोड़ दिया
Sañjaya said: “Shameless one, you keep abandoning the battle and running away again and again. Look at Bhīma’s greatness—how noble his birth and conduct are: though you are devoted to flight, he did not utter harsh words at you even as you fled. Yet again you fought, and by sheer chance you once managed to make that Pāṇḍava hero, Bhīma, chariotless. But, O Rādheya, by hurling abusive speech at Bhīma you acted in a manner befitting your own lineage. O best of men, you do not understand the danger now before you. Like a jackal scorning the wild beasts, you despise the kṣatriya way. For Bhīma, battle is ancestral duty; for you, what suits your family is the work of a charioteer. I tell you this, O Rādheya, at the very mouth of battle, in the midst of all weapon-bearers: do everything you can in every way. In war, even Indra does not always attain unfailing success. Once, made chariotless by Yuyudhāna (Sātyaki), with your senses shaken and near death, he knew ‘you are one I must slay’; yet after defeating you, he let you go alive.”
Verse 11
यदृच्छया रणे भीम॑ युध्यमानं महाबलम् | कथंचिद् विरथं कृत्वा यत् त्वं रूक्षमभाषथा:
Sañjaya said: “When, by a chance turn in the battle, you managed somehow to make the mighty Bhīma—who was fighting fiercely—without his chariot, you then spoke harshly. In the midst of war, such rough words reveal the strain of pride and anger, and they foreshadow how speech itself can become a weapon that deepens enmity beyond the immediate clash of arms.”
Verse 12
नारिं जित्वातिकत्थन्ते न च जल्पन्ति दुर्वच:
Sañjaya said: Having conquered a woman, they boast excessively; yet those harsh-tongued men do not speak with proper restraint. The verse censures empty bravado and cruel speech, implying that true valor and dharma are shown in self-control and respectful conduct, not in humiliating the vulnerable.
Verse 13
त्वं तु प्राकृतविज्ञानस्तत् तद् वदसि सूतज
But you, being limited to ordinary understanding, keep saying this and that, O son of a charioteer. The remark underscores a moral tension in the war narrative: when judgment is clouded by partial knowledge, speech becomes impulsive and unreliable, and counsel loses its ethical weight.
Verse 14
युध्यमानं पराक्रान्तं शूरमार्यव्रते रतम्
Sañjaya said: “(I beheld him) fighting on, mighty in prowess— a true hero, steadfastly devoted to the noble code of conduct.”
Verse 15
पश्यतां सर्वसैन्यानां केशवस्य ममैव च
Sañjaya said: “While all the armies looked on—before Keśava and before me as well.”
Verse 16
नच त्वां परुषं किंचिदुक्तवान् पाण्डुनन्दन:,तस्मादस्यावलेपस्य सद्यः फलमवाप्रुहि । 'परंतु उन पाण्डुनन्दन भीमने तुझसे कोई कटु वचन नहीं कहा। तूने जो भीमको बहुत- सी रूखी बातें सुनायी हैं और मेरे परोक्षमें तुमलोगोंने जो मेरे पुत्र सुभद्राकुमार अभिमन्युको अन्यायपूर्वक मार डाला है, अपने उस घमंडका तत्काल ही उचित फल तू प्राप्त कर ले
Sañjaya said: “The son of Pāṇḍu has not spoken any harsh word to you at all. Therefore, receive at once the fitting fruit of this arrogance of yours.”
Verse 17
यस्मात् तु बहु रूक्ष॑ च श्रावितस्ते वृकोदर: । परोक्षं यच्च सौभद्रो युष्माभिन्निहतो मम
Sañjaya said: “Because you have made Vṛkodara hear many harsh and bitter words, and because my Saubhadra was slain by you while he was out of your sight, the consequences of that cruelty are now unfolding.”
Verse 18
त्वया तस्य धनुश्छिन्नमात्मनाशाय दुर्मते
Sañjaya said: “By you, his bow has been cut—an act that will lead to your own ruin, O evil-minded one.”
Verse 19
कुरु त्वं सर्वकृत्यानि महत् ते भयमागतम्
Sañjaya said: “Do you now do whatever must be done; a great danger has come upon you.”
Verse 20
ये चान्ये5प्युपयास्यन्ति बुद्धिमोहेन मां नूपा:
Sañjaya said: “And those other kings too, whose judgment is clouded by delusion, will come to me (seeking counsel or aid).”
Verse 21
त्वां च मूढाकृतप्रज्ममतिमानिनमाहवे
“And you too—on the battlefield—one who truly lacks discernment, yet wears the guise of wisdom and is swollen with self-conceit.”
Verse 22
अर्जुनेन प्रतिज्ञाते वधे कर्णसुतस्य तु
Sañjaya said: When Arjuna had made his solemn vow to bring about the death of Karṇa’s son, the course of the battle became charged with the moral weight of a warrior’s pledged word—where honor, duty, and the terrible inevitability of war converge.
Verse 23
तस्मिन्नाकुलसंग्रामे वर्तमाने महाभये
Sañjaya said: While that bewildering battle was in progress—amidst a great and overwhelming terror—
Verse 24
मन्दरश्मि: सहस्रांशुरस्तं गिरिमुपाद्रवत् । उस महाभयानक तुमुल संग्रामके छिड़ जानेपर मन्द किरणोंवाले भगवान् सूर्यदेव अस्ताचलको चले गये ।। ततो राजन् हृषीकेश: संग्रामशिरसि स्थितम्
Sañjaya said: When that dreadfully terrifying and tumultuous battle had broken out, the thousand-rayed Sun—now casting gentler beams—hastened toward the mountain of setting, the western horizon. Then, O King, Hṛṣīkeśa (Kṛṣṇa), standing at the very forefront of the battle…
Verse 25
दिष्टया सम्पादिता जिष्णो प्रतिज्ञा महती त्वया
Sañjaya said: “By good fortune, O Jiṣṇu, the great vow you had undertaken has been fulfilled by you.”
Verse 26
धार्तराष्ट्रबलं प्राप्प देवसेनापि भारत
Sañjaya said: “O Bhārata, having reached the Dhārtarāṣṭra host, the divine army too came there—signaling that the conflict was drawing in forces beyond the merely human and that the tide of war was being shaped by larger, fateful alignments.”
Verse 27
न तं पश्यामि लोकेषु चिन्तयन् पुरुषं क्वचित्
Sañjaya said: “I do not see, in any of the worlds, any man anywhere who, upon reflection, could match him.”
Verse 28
महाप्रभावा बहवस्त्वया तुल्याधिकाडपि वा
Sañjaya said: “Many men of great power exist—some equal to you, and some even superior.”
Verse 29
समेता: पृथिवीपाला धार्तराष्ट्रस्य कारणात् । धृतराष्ट्रपुत्र दुर्योधनके लिये बहुत-से महान् प्रभावशाली राजा यहाँ एकत्र हो गये हैं, जिनमेंसे कितने ही तुम्हारे समान या तुमसे भी अधिक बलशाली हैं ।। ते त्वां प्राप्य रणे क्रुद्धा नाभ्यवर्तन्त दंशिता:
Sañjaya said: “Because of Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s son, the kings who rule the earth have assembled here. Having reached you in battle, those armoured warriors, inflamed with wrath, did not turn back.”
Verse 30
तव वीर्य बल॑ चैव रुद्रशक्रान्तकोपमम् । 'वे भी रणक्षेत्रमें कवच बाँधकर कुपित हो तुम्हारा सामना करनेके लिये आये, परंतु टिक न सके। तुम्हारा बल और पराक्रम रुद्र, इन्द्र तथा यमराजके समान है ।। नेदृश॑ शकक््नुयात् कश्चिद् रणे कर्तु पराक्रमम्
Sañjaya said: “Your heroism and strength are like those of Rudra, Śakra (Indra), and Antaka (Yama). No one could display such prowess in battle. Those warriors came to face you on the field, armored and enraged, yet they could not stand their ground.”
Verse 31
एवमेव हते कर्णे सानुबन्धे दुरात्मनि
Sañjaya said: “Just so, when Karṇa—the wicked one—was slain, together with all that was bound up with him (his supporting forces and consequences), …”
Verse 32
वर्धयिष्यामि भूयस्त्वां विजितारिं हतद्विषम् । “इसी प्रकार सगे-सम्बन्धियोंसहित दुरात्मा कर्णके मारे जानेपर शत्रुओंको जीतने और द्वेषी विपक्षियोंको मार डालनेवाले तुझ विजयी वीरको पुन: बधाई दूँगा” ।। तमर्जुन: प्रत्युवाच प्रसादात् तव माधव
Sañjaya said: “Again I shall extol you—victorious over your foes, the slayer of hostile adversaries.” Then Arjuna replied: “O Mādhava, it is by your grace.”
Verse 33
अनाक्षर्यो जयस्तेषां येषां नाथोडसि केशव,“केशव! आप जिनके रक्षक हैं, उनकी विजय हो, इसमें कोई आश्वर्यकी बात नहीं है। आपके कृपा-प्रसादसे राजा युधिष्छिर सम्पूर्ण भूमण्डलका राज्य प्राप्त कर लेंगे। वृष्णिनन्दन! प्रभो! यह आपका ही प्रभाव और आपकी ही विजय है। मधुसूदन! आपकी बधाईके पात्र तो हमलोग सदा ही बने रहेंगे!
Sañjaya said: “O Keśava, it is no wonder that victory belongs to those whose protector you are. By the grace of your favor, King Yudhiṣṭhira will obtain sovereignty over the whole circle of the earth. O delight of the Vṛṣṇis, Lord—this is your very power, and this is your victory. O Madhusūdana, we shall always remain worthy recipients of your blessing.”
Verse 34
त्वत्प्रसादान्महीं कृत्स्नां सम्प्राप्स्यति युधिष्ठिर: । तव प्रभावो वार्ष्णेय तवैव विजय: प्रभो । वर्धनीयास्तव वयं सदैव मधुसूदन,“केशव! आप जिनके रक्षक हैं, उनकी विजय हो, इसमें कोई आश्वर्यकी बात नहीं है। आपके कृपा-प्रसादसे राजा युधिष्छिर सम्पूर्ण भूमण्डलका राज्य प्राप्त कर लेंगे। वृष्णिनन्दन! प्रभो! यह आपका ही प्रभाव और आपकी ही विजय है। मधुसूदन! आपकी बधाईके पात्र तो हमलोग सदा ही बने रहेंगे!
Sañjaya said: “By your gracious favor, Yudhiṣṭhira will obtain the entire earth. O Vārṣṇeya, O Lord, this is your very power—indeed, your own victory. O Madhusūdana, we are ever those who must offer you congratulations and praise. (For those whom you protect, their triumph is no wonder.)”
Verse 35
एवमुक्तस्तत: कृष्ण: शनकैर्वाहयन् हयान् । दर्शयामास पार्थाय क्रूरमायोधनं महत्,अर्जुनके ऐसा कहनेपर भगवान् श्रीकृष्णने धीरे-धीरे घोड़ोंको बढ़ाते हुए उस विशाल एवं क्रूरतापूर्ण संग्रामका दृश्य अर्जुनको दिखाना आरम्भ किया
Sañjaya said: Thus addressed, Kṛṣṇa slowly urged on the horses and began to show Pārtha the vast battlefield—terrible in its cruelty—unfolding before them.
Verse 36
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच प्रार्थयन्तो जयं युद्धे प्रथितं च महद् यश: । पृथिव्यां शेरते शूरा: पार्थिवास्त्वच्छरैर्हता:
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: Seeking victory in battle and the widely renowned, great fame that follows it, those heroic kings now lie upon the earth—slain by your arrows.
Verse 37
श्रीकृष्ण बोले--अर्जुन! युद्धमें विजय और सब ओर फैले हुए महान् सुयशकी अभिलाषा रखनेवाले ये शूरवीर भूपाल तुम्हारे बाणोंसे मरकर पृथ्वीपर सो रहे हैं ।। विकीर्णशस्त्राभरणा विपन्नाश्वरथद्विपा: । संछिन्नभिन्नमर्माणो वैक्लव्यं परमं गता:,इनके अस्त्र-शस्त्र और आभूषण बिखरे पड़े हैं, घोड़े, रथ और हाथी नष्ट हो गये हैं तथा मर्मस्थल छिन्न-भिन्न हो जानेके कारण ये नरेश भारी व्याकुलतामें पड़ गये हैं
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “Arjuna, these heroic kings—longing for victory in battle and for great fame spread in every direction—have been struck down by your arrows and now lie upon the earth. Their weapons and ornaments are scattered; their horses, chariots, and elephants are destroyed; and with their vital points torn and shattered, they have fallen into the utmost helplessness.”
Verse 38
ससत्त्वा गतसत्त्वाश्न प्रभया परया युता: । सजीवा इव लक्ष्यन्ते गतसत्त्वा नराधिपा:,कितने ही राजाओंके प्राण चले गये हैं और कितनोंके प्राण अभी नहीं निकले हैं। जिनके प्राण निकल गये हैं, वे नरेश भी अत्यन्त कान्तिसे प्रकाशित होनेके कारण जीवित- से दिखायी देते हैं
Among them, some have lost their lives and some have not yet. Yet even those kings whose life has departed, being clothed in a surpassing radiance, appear as though they still lived.
Verse 39
तेषां शरै: स्वर्णपुड्खै: शस्त्रैश्व विविधै: शितै: । वाहनैरायुधैश्नैव सम्पूर्णा पश्य मेदिनीम्,देखो, यह सारी पृथ्वी उन राजाओंके सुवर्णमय पंखवाले बाणों, तेज धारवाले नाना प्रकारके शस्त्रों, वाहनों और आयुधोंसे भरी हुई है
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “Look—see how this whole earth is filled everywhere with their arrows, whose feathers are golden, with many kinds of keen-edged weapons, and with fallen mounts and implements of war.”
Verse 40
वर्मभिश्चर्मभिहरि: शिरोभिश्व॒ सकुण्डलै: । उष्णीषैर्मुकुटै: स्रग्भिश्वूडामणिभिरम्बरै:,भारत! चारों ओर गिरे हुए कवच, ढाल, हार, कुण्डलयुक्त मस्तक, पगड़ी, मुकुट, माला, चूड़ामणि, वस्त्र, कण्ठसूत्र, बाजूबंद, चमकीले निष्क एवं अन्यान्य विचित्र आभूषणोंसे इस रणभूमिकी बड़ी शोभा हो रही है
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “O Bhārata, all around, the battlefield is strewn with fallen armor and shields; with heads still bearing earrings; with turbans and crowns; with garlands, crest-jewels, and garments. By these scattered ornaments and war-gear, the field itself appears strangely adorned—beauty born from the terrible cost of battle.”
Verse 41
कण्ठसूत्रैरड्रदैश्व निष्कैरपि च सप्रभै: । अन्यैश्षाभरणैश्षित्रैर्भाति भारत मेदिनी,भारत! चारों ओर गिरे हुए कवच, ढाल, हार, कुण्डलयुक्त मस्तक, पगड़ी, मुकुट, माला, चूड़ामणि, वस्त्र, कण्ठसूत्र, बाजूबंद, चमकीले निष्क एवं अन्यान्य विचित्र आभूषणोंसे इस रणभूमिकी बड़ी शोभा हो रही है
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “O Bhārata, the earth (this battlefield) shines with splendor, adorned on all sides by fallen neck-threads, rich and radiant niṣkas, and many other varied ornaments. Even amid slaughter, the field is made visually resplendent by the scattered emblems of warriors—signs of status and pride now lying abandoned—quietly revealing the cost and vanity of war.”
Verse 42
अनुकर्षरुपासड्रैः पताकाभिर्ध्वजैस्तथा । उपस्करैरधिष्ठानैरीषादण्डकबन्धुरै:,अपदविद्धैर्बभौ भूमिगग्रहैद्यौरिव शारदी । बहुत-से अनुकर्ष, उपासंग, पताका, ध्वज, सजावटकी सामग्री, बैठक, ईषादण्ड, बन्धनरज्जु, टूटे-फ़ूटे पहिये, विचित्र धुरे, नाना प्रकारके जुए, जोत, लगाम, धनुष-बाण, हाथीकी रंगीन झूल, हाथीकी पीठपर बिछाये जानेवाले गलीचे, परिघ, अंकुश, शक्ति, भिन्दिपाल, तरकश, शूल, फरसे प्रास, तोमर, कुन्त, डंडे, शतघ्नी, भुशुण्डी, खड्ग, परशु, मुसल, मुद्गर, गदा, कुणप, सोनेके चाबुक, गजराजोंके घण्टे, नाना प्रकारके हौदे और जीन, माला, भाँति-भाँतिके अलंकार तथा बहुमूल्य वस्त्र रणभूमिमें सब ओर बिखरे पड़े हैं। भरतश्रेष्ठ! इनके द्वारा यह भूमि नक्षत्रोंद्वारा शरद-ऋतुके आकाशकी भाँति सुशोभित हो रही है
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “The earth shone resplendent, strewn with the fittings and traces of chariots, with banners and standards, with various implements and seats, with yoke-poles and binding-ropes, and with wheels and parts broken and cast down. Thus the battlefield, littered with the scattered apparatus of war, appeared like the clear autumn sky adorned with constellations.”
Verse 43
चक्रैः प्रमथितैश्ित्रैरक्षेश्न॒ बहुधा रणे । युगै्योक्त्रै: कलापैश्न धनुर्भि: सायकैस्तथा
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “In that battle, the chariots were shattered in many ways—by their wheels, by their variously broken axles, and likewise by yokes and reins; quivers were scattered, bows were snapped, and arrows lay strewn. Thus the field bore witness to the ruin that unchecked fury brings, where skill and valor, severed from restraint, turn even noble instruments into wreckage.”
Verse 44
परिस्तोमै: कुथाभि श्न परिघैरड्कुशैस्तथा । शक्तिभिभिन्दिपालैश्न तृणै: शूलै: परश्वचै:
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “They assailed him from every side with a bewildering variety of weapons—clubs and bludgeons, iron bars and goads, spears and bhindipālas, as well as tridents and battle-axes—showing how, in the frenzy of war, force multiplies and restraint is forgotten.”
Verse 45
प्रासैश्न तोमरैश्वैव कुन्तैर्यष्टि भिरेव च । शतघध्नीभिर्भूशुण्डीभि: खड्गै: परशुभिस्तथा
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “With spears and javelins; with lances and staves as well; with heavy maces (śataghadhnī) and bhūśuṇḍī missiles; and also with swords and axes.”
Verse 46
मुसलैर्मुद्गरैश्वैव गदाभि: कुणपैस्तथा । सुवर्णविकृताभिश्व कशाभिभर्भरतर्षभ
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “With pestles (musala), with hammers (mudgara), with maces (gadā), and even with carcasses; and also with whips fashioned and adorned with gold—O bull among the Bhāratas.”
Verse 47
घण्टाभिश्ष गजेन्द्राणां भाण्डैश्न विविधैरपि । स्रग्भिश्ष नानाभरणैवस्त्रैश्ैव महाधनै:
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “With bells for the lordly elephants, and with various kinds of equipment as well; with garlands, with many ornaments, and with garments—indeed with great riches.”
Verse 48
पृथिव्यां पृथिवीहेतो: पृथिवीपतयो हता:
Kṛṣṇa said: “Upon this very earth, for the sake of possessing the earth, the lords of the earth have been slain.”
Verse 49
पृथिवीमुपगुदाज्लैः सुप्ता: कान्तामिव प्रियाम् इस पृथ्वीके राज्यके लिये मारे गये ये पृथ्वीपति अपने सम्पूर्ण अंगोंद्वारा प्यारी प्राणवललभाके समान इस भूमिका आलिंगन करके इसपर सो रहे हैं ।। ४८ $ ।। इमांश्व॒ गिरिकूटाभान् नागानैरावतोपमान्,तांक्ष बाणहतान् वीर पश्य निष्टनत: क्षितौ । वीर! देखो, से पर्वतशिखरके समान प्रतीत होनेवाले ऐरावत-जैसे हाथी शस्त्रोंद्वारा बने हुए घावोंके छिद्रसे उसी प्रकार अधिकाधिक रक्तकी धारा बहा रहे हैं, जैसे पर्वत अपनी कन्दराओंके मुखसे गेरुमिश्रित जलके झरने बहाया करते हैं। वे बाणोंसे मारे जाकर धरतीपर लोट रहे हैं
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “For the sake of sovereignty over the earth, these lords of the earth have been slain; with all their limbs they clasp this ground as one would embrace a beloved wife, and thus they lie asleep upon her. And look, O hero—these elephants, seeming like mountain-peaks and comparable to Airāvata, struck down by arrows, writhe and groan upon the soil, their wounds pouring forth streams of blood, as mountains send down reddish torrents from the mouths of their caves.”
Verse 50
क्षरत: शोणितं भूरि शस्त्रच्छेददरीमुखै: । दरीमुखैरिव गिरीन् गैरिकाम्बुपरिस्रवान्
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “Blood was flowing in great quantity from the gaping wounds made by weapon-cuts—like mountains whose ravines pour down streams of red-ochre water.”
Verse 51
हयांश्व॒ पतितान् पश्य स्वर्णभाण्डविभूषितान्,सोनेके जीन एवं साज-बाजसे विभूषित इन घोड़ोंको तो देखो, ये भी प्राणशून्य होकर पड़े हैं। ये रथ जिनके स्वामी मारे गये हैं, गन्धर्वनगरके समान दिखायी देते हैं। इनकी ध्वजा, पताका और धुरे छिन्न-भिन्न हो गये हैं, पहिये नष्ट हो चुके हैं और सारथि भी मार डाले गये हैं
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “Look at these horses, fallen and lifeless, once adorned with golden trappings. And see these chariots whose masters have been slain—standing like a phantom city of the Gandharvas, splendid yet empty. Their standards and banners are torn away, their yokes shattered, their wheels ruined, and even the charioteers have been struck down.”
Verse 52
गन्धर्वनगराकारान् रथांश्व निहतेश्वरान् । छिन्नध्वजपताकाक्षान् विचक्रान् हतसारथीन्,सोनेके जीन एवं साज-बाजसे विभूषित इन घोड़ोंको तो देखो, ये भी प्राणशून्य होकर पड़े हैं। ये रथ जिनके स्वामी मारे गये हैं, गन्धर्वनगरके समान दिखायी देते हैं। इनकी ध्वजा, पताका और धुरे छिन्न-भिन्न हो गये हैं, पहिये नष्ट हो चुके हैं और सारथि भी मार डाले गये हैं
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “Behold these chariots and horses—now like the illusory splendor of a Gandharva-city—whose masters have been slain. Their banners and pennons are torn away, their axles are shattered, their wheels destroyed, and their charioteers killed. Thus the proud instruments of war, once richly adorned, lie lifeless, exposing the fragility of martial glory and the terrible cost of violence.”
Verse 53
निकृत्तकूबरयुगान् भग्नेषाबन्धुरान् प्रभो | पश्य पार्थ हयान् भूमौ विमानोपमदर्शनान्,प्रभो! इन रथोंके कूबर और जुए खण्डित हो गये हैं। ईषादण्ड टुकड़े-टुकड़े कर दिये गये हैं और इनकी बन्धन-रज्जुओंकी भी धज्जियाँ उड़ गयी हैं। पार्थ! भूमिपर पड़े हुए इन घोड़ोंको तो देखो, ये विमानके समान दिखायी दे रहे हैं
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “O lord, look, Pārtha—these horses lie on the ground. The chariot-poles and yokes have been cut away; the shafts are shattered, and even the binding reins have been torn to tatters. See how these fallen steeds, in their form and presence, appear like aerial cars.”
Verse 54
पत्ती क्षनिहतान वीर शतशो5थ सहस्रश: । धनुर्भुतश्चर्मभृतः शयानान् रुधिरोक्षितान्,वीर! अपने मारे हुए इन सैकड़ों और हजारों पैदल सैनिकोंको देखो, जो धनुष और ढाल लिये खूनसे लथपथ हो धरतीपर सो रहे हैं
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “O hero, behold these foot-soldiers—slain in an instant—by the hundreds and by the thousands. Still bearing their bows and shields, they lie upon the ground, drenched in blood.”
Verse 55
महीमालिड्ग्य सर्वज्ञि: पांसुध्वस्तशिरोरुहान् । पश्य योधान् महाबाहो त्वच्छरैर्भिन्नविग्रहान्,महाबाहो! तुम्हारे बाणोंसे जिनके शरीर छिन्न-भिन्न हो रहे हैं, उन योद्धाओंकी दशा तो देखो। उनके बाल धूलमें सन गये हैं और वे अपने सम्पूर्ण अंगोंसे इस पृथ्वीका आलिंगन करके सो रहे हैं
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “O mighty-armed one, look at these warriors—torn apart in body by your arrows. Their hair is matted with dust, and embracing the earth with all their limbs, they lie as if asleep.”
Verse 56
निपातितद्विपरथवाजिसंकुल- मसृग्वसापिशितसमृद्धकर्दमम् । निशाचरश्ववृकपिशाचमोदनं महीतलं नरवर पश्य दुर्दशम्,नरश्रेष्ठ इस भूतलकी दशा देख लो। इसकी ओर दृष्टि डालना कठिन हो रहा है। यह मारे गये हाथियों, चौपट हुए रथों और मरे हुए घोड़ोंसे पट गया है। रक्त, चर्बी और मांससे यहाँ कीच जम गयी है। यह रणभूमि निशाचरों, कुत्तों, भेड़ियों और पिशाचोंके लिये आनन्ददायिनी बन गयी है
Kṛṣṇa said: “O best of men, look at the earth in this dreadful condition. It is choked with fallen elephants, shattered chariots, and dead horses. Muddy with blood, fat, and flesh, this battlefield has become a place of delight for night-roamers, dogs, wolves, and ghouls. Behold how war reduces the world to such ruin.”
Verse 57
इदं महत् त्वय्युपपद्यते प्रभो रणाजिरे कर्म यशोभिवर्धनम् | शतक्रतौ चापि च देवसत्तमे महाहवे जचघ्नुषि दैत्यदानवान्,प्रभो! समरांगणमें यह यशोवर्धक महान् कर्म करनेकी शक्ति तुममें तथा महायुद्धमें दैत्यों और दानवोंका संहार करनेवाले देवराज इन्द्रमें ही सम्भव है
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “O Lord, this great deed—so fitting on the battlefield and so increasing of fame—truly belongs to you. It is possible in you alone, and in Indra as well, the noblest among the gods, who in a mighty war struck down the Daityas and Dānavas.”
Verse 58
संजय उवाच एवं संदर्शयन् कृष्णो रणभूमिं किरीटिने । स्वै: समेत: समुदितै: पाउ्चजन्यं व्यनादयत्,संजय कहते हैं--राजन्! इस प्रकार किरीटधारी अर्जुनको रणभूमिका दृश्य दिखाते हुए भगवान् श्रीकृष्णने वहाँ जुटे हुए स्वजनोंसहित पांचजन्य शंख बजाया
Sañjaya said: “O King, in this manner, while showing the scene of the battlefield to Arjuna, the diadem-crowned warrior, Kṛṣṇa—surrounded by his own assembled followers—sounded the conch Pāñcajanya.”
Verse 59
स दर्शयन्नेव किरीटिने5रिहा जनार्दनस्तामरिभूमिमज्जसा । अजातशशन्रुं समुपेत्य पाण्डवं निवेदयामास हतं जयद्रथम्,शत्रुसूदन भगवान् श्रीकृष्णने अर्जुनको इस प्रकार रणभूमिका दृश्य दिखाते हुए अनायास ही अजातशत्रु पाण्डुनन्दन युधिष्ठिरके पास पहुँचकर उनसे यह निवेदन किया कि जयद्रथ मारा गया
Sañjaya said: Janārdana, the foe-destroyer, even as he showed that battlefield to the diademed Arjuna, swiftly approached Ajātaśatru—the Pāṇḍava Yudhiṣṭhira—and reported to him that Jayadratha had been slain.
Verse 116
अधर्मस्त्वेष सुमहाननार्यचरितं च तत् । 'परंतु तूने रणभूमिमें युद्धपरायण महाबली भीमसेनको दैवेच्छासे किसी प्रकार रथहीन करके जो उनके प्रति कठोर बातें कही थीं, यह तेरा महान् अधर्म है। नीच मनुष्य वैसा कार्य करते हैं
Sañjaya said: “This is a very great act of adharma—conduct unworthy of the noble. For, having somehow caused the mighty Bhīmasena—ever intent on battle—to become chariotless by the turn of fate, you then spoke harsh words to him. Such behavior belongs to the base-minded.”
Verse 123
न च कज्चन निन्दन्ति सन्त: शूरा नरर्षभा: | “नरश्रेष्ठ शूरवीर सज्जन शत्रुको जीतकर बढ़-बढ़कर बातें नहीं बनाते, किसीको कट वचन नहीं कहते और न किसीकी निन््दा ही करते हैं
Sañjaya said: The truly noble—heroic men, the best among men—do not indulge in censuring anyone. Even in victory and strength, they refrain from harsh speech and from finding fault in others; such restraint is a mark of character amid the violence of war.
Verse 136
बह्नबद्धमकर्ण्य च चापलादपरीक्षितम् | 'सूतपुत्र! तेरी बुद्धि बहुत ओछी है। इसीलिये तू चपलतावश बिना जाँचे-बूझे बहुत-सी न सुननेयोग्य असम्बद्ध बातें बक जाया करता है
Sañjaya said: Hearing speech that was incoherent and ill-joined—uttered in fickleness and without due examination—he censured it as unworthy of being heard, pointing to the ethical fault of speaking rashly and without discernment.
Verse 143
यदवोचोडप्रियं भीम॑ नैतत् सत्यं वचस्तव । 'तूने युद्धमें संलग्न, श्रेष्ठ व्रतके पालनमें तत्पर, पराक्रमी और शूरवीर भीमसेनके प्रति जो अप्रिय वचन कहा है, तेरा यह कथन ठीक नहीं है
Sañjaya said: “The harsh words you spoke to Bhīma are not true. Such speech is improper—especially when directed at Bhīmasena, who is engaged in battle, steadfast in noble vows, and renowned for valor and heroism.”
Verse 148
इति श्रीमहाभारते द्रोणपर्वणि जयद्रथवधपर्वणि अष्टचत्वारिंशदधिकशततमो< ध्याय:,इस प्रकार श्रीमहाभारत द्रोणपर्वके अन्तर्गत जयद्रथवधपर्वमें एक सौ अड्श़तालीसवाँ अध्याय पूरा हुआ
Sañjaya said: Thus, in the Śrī Mahābhārata, within the Droṇa Parva, in the section concerning the slaying of Jayadratha, the one-hundred-and-forty-eighth chapter is concluded.
Verse 156
विरथो भीमसेनेन कृतोडसि बहुशो रणे । “सारी सेनाओंके देखते-देखते मेरे और श्रीकृष्णके सामने युद्धस्थलमें भीमसेनने तुझे अनेक बार रथहीन कर दिया है
Sanjaya said: In battle you have been made chariotless by Bhimasena many times. Before the eyes of all the armies—right there on the field, in the presence of me and of Sri Krishna—Bhimasena has repeatedly stripped you of your chariot. The remark underscores the public, undeniable nature of martial humiliation and the ethical weight of truth spoken amid war: prowess must be measured by witnessed deeds, not by boasts.
Verse 173
तस्मादस्यावलेपस्य सद्यः फलमवाप्रुहि । 'परंतु उन पाण्डुनन्दन भीमने तुझसे कोई कटु वचन नहीं कहा। तूने जो भीमको बहुत- सी रूखी बातें सुनायी हैं और मेरे परोक्षमें तुमलोगोंने जो मेरे पुत्र सुभद्राकुमार अभिमन्युको अन्यायपूर्वक मार डाला है, अपने उस घमंडका तत्काल ही उचित फल तू प्राप्त कर ले
Sañjaya said: “Therefore, receive at once the due fruit of this arrogance of yours.” In the surrounding context, the thrust is ethical and retributive: despite Bhīma not having spoken harshly to him, the addressee had insulted Bhīma and had also taken part—unjustly and from behind the scenes—in the killing of Abhimanyu; hence the demand that the consequences of such pride and adharma be met immediately.
Verse 183
तस्माद् वध्यो5सि मे मूढ सभृत्यसुतबान्धव: । “दुर्मते! मूढ़! तूने अपने विनाशके लिये अभिमन्युका धनुष काट दिया था, अतः मेरे द्वारा भृत्य, पुत्र तथा वन्धु-बान्धवोंसहित प्राणदण्ड पानेयोग्य है
Sañjaya said: “Therefore, you are fit to be slain by me, O fool—together with your attendants, your sons, and your kinsmen.” The line frames the act as retributive justice in the heat of war: a moral condemnation (“mūḍha”) coupled with a vow of punishment extending to one’s supporting circle, reflecting the brutal escalation and collective consequences typical of the Kurukṣetra conflict.
Verse 196
हन्तास्मि वृषसेन ते प्रेक्षमाणस्य संयुगे । “तू अपने सारे कर्तव्य पूर्ण कर ले। तुझे भारी भय आ पहुँचा है। मैं युद्धस्थलमें तेरे देखते-देखते तेरे पुत्र वृषसेनको मार डालूँगा
Sañjaya said: “In this battle, while you look on, I shall slay your son Vṛṣasena. Fulfil all your duties as you deem fit—great fear has come upon you.”
Verse 213
दृष्टवा दुर्योधनो मन्दो भृशं तप्स्यति पातितम् | 'ओ मूढ़! तुझ अपवित्र बुद्धिवाले अत्यन्त घमंडी सहायकको युद्धस्थलमें धराशायी हुआ देखकर मूर्ख दुर्योधनको भी बड़ा पश्चात्ताप होगा
Sañjaya said: Seeing his fallen ally, the dull-witted Duryodhana will be seized by intense remorse. The verse underscores how arrogant, impure counsel and pride-driven alliances in war ultimately ripen into grief when their consequences become visible on the battlefield.
Verse 226
महान् सुतुमुल: शब्दो बभूव रथिनां तदा । इस प्रकार अर्जुनके द्वारा कर्णपुत्र वृषसेनके वधकी प्रतिज्ञा होनेपर उस समय वहाँ रथियोंका महान् एवं भयंकर कोलाहल छा गया
Sañjaya said: At that moment, a great and violently tumultuous roar arose among the chariot-warriors—an uproar sparked by Arjuna’s vow to slay Vṛṣasena, the son of Karṇa.
Verse 243
तीर्णप्रतिज्ञं बीभत्सुं परिष्वज्यैनमब्रवीत् । राजन! तत्पश्चात् भगवान् श्रीकृष्णने प्रतिज्ञासे पार होकर युद्धके मुहानेपर खड़े हुए अर्जुनको हृदयसे लगाकर इस प्रकार कहा--
Sañjaya said: Having embraced Arjuna—Bībhatsu—who had fulfilled his vow, the Blessed Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa spoke to him. O King, thereafter, when Arjuna stood at the very forefront of battle, having crossed beyond the ordeal of his pledge, Kṛṣṇa drew him close to his heart and addressed him in these words—
Verse 256
दिष्टया विनिहतः पापो वृद्धक्षत्र: सहात्मज: । “विजयशील अर्जुन! बड़े सौभाग्यकी बात है कि तुमने अपनी बड़ी भारी प्रतिज्ञा पूरी कर ली। सौभाग्यसे पापी वृद्धक्षत्र पुत्रसहित मारा गया
Sañjaya said: “By good fortune, the sinful Vṛddhakṣatra has been slain, together with his son. O Arjuna, steadfast in victory, it is indeed a great blessing that you have fulfilled your formidable vow.”
Verse 263
सीदेत समरे जिष्णो नात्र कार्या विचारणा | “भारत! दुर्योधनकी सेनामें पहुँचकर समरभूमिमें देवताओंकी सेना भी शिथिल हो सकती है। जिष्णो! इस विषयमें कोई दूसरा विचार नहीं करना चाहिये
Sañjaya said: “O Bhārata, once one enters the battle-ground and comes up against Duryodhana’s host, even the army of the gods could grow slack. O Jiṣṇu, there is no need for further deliberation on this matter.”
Verse 273
त्वदृते पुरुषव्याप्र य एतद् योधयेद् बलम् | 'पुरुषसिंह! मैं बहुत सोचनेपर भी तीनों लोकोंमें कहीं तुम्हारे सिवा किसी दूसरे पुरुषको ऐसा नहीं देखता, जो इस सेनाके साथ युद्ध कर सके
Sañjaya said: “O tiger among men, even after much reflection I do not see, anywhere in the three worlds, any other man besides you who could stand and fight against this host.”

यादृशं कृतवानद्य त्वमेक: शत्रुतापन: । 'युद्धमें कोई भी ऐसा पराक्रम नहीं कर सकता, जैसा कि आज तुमने अकेले ही कर दिखाया है। वास्तवमें तुम शत्रुओंको संताप देनेवाले हो
Sañjaya said: “O scorcher of foes, the deed you have accomplished today—alone—none in battle can match such prowess. In truth, you are one who brings burning distress upon the enemy.”

अपदविद्धैर्बभौ भूमिगग्रहैद्यौरिव शारदी । बहुत-से अनुकर्ष, उपासंग, पताका, ध्वज, सजावटकी सामग्री, बैठक, ईषादण्ड, बन्धनरज्जु, टूटे-फ़ूटे पहिये, विचित्र धुरे, नाना प्रकारके जुए, जोत, लगाम, धनुष-बाण, हाथीकी रंगीन झूल, हाथीकी पीठपर बिछाये जानेवाले गलीचे, परिघ, अंकुश, शक्ति, भिन्दिपाल, तरकश, शूल, फरसे प्रास, तोमर, कुन्त, डंडे, शतघ्नी, भुशुण्डी, खड्ग, परशु, मुसल, मुद्गर, गदा, कुणप, सोनेके चाबुक, गजराजोंके घण्टे, नाना प्रकारके हौदे और जीन, माला, भाँति-भाँतिके अलंकार तथा बहुमूल्य वस्त्र रणभूमिमें सब ओर बिखरे पड़े हैं। भरतश्रेष्ठ! इनके द्वारा यह भूमि नक्षत्रोंद्वारा शरद-ऋतुके आकाशकी भाँति सुशोभित हो रही है
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “The battlefield shone with countless scattered implements and weapons, as the autumn sky shines with stars. Everywhere lay drag-ropes and harness-gear, banners and standards, fittings and ornaments, seats and pole-shafts, binding cords, broken wheels, strange axles, many kinds of yokes, reins and bridles, bows and arrows; elephants’ bright trappings, saddle-cloths and carpets; clubs and goads; spears, bhindipālas, quivers, tridents, axes, lances, tomaras, kunta-spears, staves, śataghnīs, bhuśuṇḍīs, swords, hatchets, pestles, hammers, maces, and other weapons; golden whips, bells of lordly elephants, various howdahs and saddles, garlands, diverse ornaments, and precious garments. O best of the Bhāratas, by these the earth is adorned—like the star-strewn sky in the season of autumn.”
Verse 503
तांक्ष बाणहतान् वीर पश्य निष्टनत: क्षितौ । वीर! देखो, से पर्वतशिखरके समान प्रतीत होनेवाले ऐरावत-जैसे हाथी शस्त्रोंद्वारा बने हुए घावोंके छिद्रसे उसी प्रकार अधिकाधिक रक्तकी धारा बहा रहे हैं, जैसे पर्वत अपनी कन्दराओंके मुखसे गेरुमिश्रित जलके झरने बहाया करते हैं। वे बाणोंसे मारे जाकर धरतीपर लोट रहे हैं
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: “Look, O hero—see those elephants, struck down by arrows, writhing and groaning upon the earth. Their bodies, towering like mountain-peaks and resembling Airāvata, pour forth ever-greater streams of blood from weapon-made wounds, as mountains send out reddish, ochre-tinged waters from the mouths of their caves. Thus, pierced by arrows, they roll on the ground.”
Verse 2036
तांश्व सर्वान् हनिष्यामि सत्येनायुधमालभे । “दूसरे भी जो राजा अपनी बुद्धिपर मोह छा जानेके कारण मेरे समीप आ जायाँगे, उन सबका संहार कर डालूँगा। इस सत्यको सामने रखकर मैं अपना धनुष छूता (शपथ खाता) हूँ
Sañjaya said: “All of them I shall slay. Holding fast to this truth, I touch my weapon (the bow) as a solemn vow.”

प्रतिज्ञेयं मया तीर्णा विबुधैरपि दुस्तरा । तब अर्जुनने उनकी बातोंका उत्तर देते हुए कहा--“माधव! आपकी कृपासे मैं इस प्रतिज्ञाकों पार कर सका हूँ; अन्यथा इसका पार पाना देवताओंके लिये भी कठिन था
