Dhṛtarāṣṭra–Sañjaya Dialogue: Description of the Night Engagement of Karṇa and Ghaṭotkaca
“महाबाहु कुन्तीकुमार! ऐसा कहनेवालेके वधकी यह प्रतिज्ञा मैंने तुम्हारे साथ ही की थी। यह कर्णका वध जैसे मेरा कार्य है, वैसे ही तुम्हारा भी है, इसमें संशय नहीं है ।। तद्गधाय नरश्रेष्ठ स्मरैतद् वचनं मम । यथा भवति तत् सत्यं तथा कुरु धनंजय,“नरश्रेष्ठी कर्णके वधके लिये तुम मेरे इस कथनपर भी ध्यान दो। धनंजय! जैसे भी मेरी वह प्रतिज्ञा सत्य हो सके, वैसा प्रयत्न करो'
tad gadhāya naraśreṣṭha smaraitad vacanaṁ mama | yathā bhavati tat satyaṁ tathā kuru dhanañjaya ||
Sañjaya said: “Therefore, O best of men, keep my words firmly in mind. O Dhanañjaya, act in such a way that my vow becomes true.”
संजय उवाच
A pledged word (pratijñā) creates a moral obligation: one must act with steadiness so that the vow becomes true, especially amid the uncertainty and pressure of war.
Sañjaya reports an exhortation directed to Arjuna (Dhanañjaya): he is told to remember the speaker’s statement and to take whatever effective steps are needed so that the vow—linked in context to the aim of Karṇa’s death—can be fulfilled.
