Indra

Mantra 1

त्वावतः पुरूवसो वयमिन्द्र प्रणेतः । स्मसि स्थातर्हरीणाम् ॥

We are yours who are guarded by you, O Indra rich in plenitude; you are our leader: we stand established with your powers of swift force.

Mantra 2

त्वां हि सत्यमद्रिवो विद्म दातारमिषाम् । विद्म दातारं रयीणाम् ॥

You indeed are the True, O wielder of the thunderstone; we know you as the giver of inner impulsion and nourishment, we know you as the giver of the riches of being.

Mantra 3

आ यस्य ते महिमानं शतमूते शतक्रतो । गीर्भिर्गृणन्ति कारवः ॥

To your greatness the singers rise with their words, O helper of a hundred ways, O of a hundred powers of will; with inspired utterances the seers acclaim you.

Mantra 4

सुनीथो घा स मर्त्यो यं मरुतो यमर्यमा । मित्रः पान्त्यद्रुहः ॥

Truly well-led is that mortal whom the Maruts and Aryaman—and Mitra, the undeceiving—protect: he moves on the right path of the Truth.

Mantra 5

दधानो गोमदश्ववत्सुवीर्यमादित्यजूत एधते । सदा राया पुरुस्पृहा ॥

Bearing a wealth that is luminous with rays (cows) and dynamic powers (horses), and a hero-force of right becoming, he grows by the impulsion of the Adityas; always he increases with riches that many desire.

Mantra 6

तमिन्द्रं दानमीमहे शवसानमभीर्वम् । ईशानं राय ईमहे ॥

That Indra we seek—Indra the giver—strong in force and fearless; the lord of plenitude we seek, the master of the riches of being.

Mantra 7

तस्मिन्हि सन्त्यूतयो विश्वा अभीरवः सचा । तमा वहन्तु सप्तयः पुरूवसुं मदाय हरयः सुतम् ॥

In him indeed are all the fearless helps, accompanying him. Let the seven-yoked bring him here—Indra rich in plenitude—for the ecstasy: the tawny steeds bringing the pressed Soma.

Mantra 8

यस्ते मदो वरेण्यो य इन्द्र वृत्रहन्तमः । य आददिः स्वर्नृभिर्यः पृतनासु दुष्टरः ॥

That ecstasy of yours is the most to be chosen, O Indra—most supreme in the slaying of obstruction; you who have taken the heaven-light with the human powers, you who are hard to cross in the battles: make that victorious force active in us.

Mantra 9

यो दुष्टरो विश्ववार श्रवाय्यो वाजेष्वस्ति तरुता । स नः शविष्ठ सवना वसो गहि गमेम गोमति व्रजे ॥

He who is hard to overcome, who holds every desirable good, who is truly to be heard and followed, and who is the victorious force in the plenitudes—come to our Soma-pressings, O most puissant one, O giver of richness; may we arrive at the luminous herdfold where the Rays of knowledge abound.

Mantra 10

गव्यो षु णो यथा पुराश्वयोत रथया । वरिवस्य महामह ॥

Make for us the wide passage to the Light, as of old—by the horse-force and by the chariot-force; O Great One, do thou enlarge our free room and right movement.

Mantra 11

नहि ते शूर राधसोऽन्तं विन्दामि सत्रा । दशस्या नो मघवन्नू चिदद्रिवो धियो वाजेभिराविथ ॥

I find no limit at all to thy giving, O Hero. Do thou be gracious to us, O bounteous one; even now, O wielder of the stone, thou hast upheld our thoughts with victorious powers.

Mantra 12

य ऋष्वः श्रावयत्सखा विश्वेत्स वेद जनिमा पुरुष्टुतः । तं विश्वे मानुषा युगेन्द्रं हवन्ते तविषं यतस्रुचः ॥

He who is lofty, the comrade who makes the hearing grow, he indeed knows all births and becomings, the much-praised. Him—Indra—do all human generations call, the mighty force, they who hold the ladles in right control.

Mantra 13

स नो वाजेष्वविता पुरूवसुः पुरस्थाता मघवा वृत्रहा भुवत् ॥

May he be our helper in the plenitudes of force—rich in many goods—standing in front as our leader; may the bounteous one, the slayer of the Coverer, become for us.

Mantra 14

अभि वो वीरमन्धसो मदेषु गाय गिरा महा विचेतसम् । इन्द्रं नाम श्रुत्यं शाकिनं वचो यथा ॥

Sing to him, your hero, in the raptures of Soma, with a great utterance—Indra of wide discernment—so that the word may be effective, making his name heard as the capable doer.

Mantra 15

ददी रेक्णस्तन्वे ददिर्वसु ददिर्वाजेषु पुरुहूत वाजिनम् । नूनमथ ॥

Giver of riches to the being, giver of substance, giver in the plenitudes—O much-invoked—grant now, then, the victorious steed-force within us.

Mantra 16

विश्वेषामिरज्यन्तं वसूनां सासह्वांसं चिदस्य वर्पसः । कृपयतो नूनमत्यथ ॥

Even among all riches he is the one desired; even by sheer presence and form he overpowers. Now, then, go beyond our poverty of consciousness—have compassion and exceed it.

Mantra 17

महः सु वो अरमिषे स्तवामहे मीळ्हुषे अरंगमाय जग्मये । यज्ञेभिर्गीर्भिर्विश्वमनुषां मरुतामियक्षसि गाये त्वा नमसा गिरा ॥

For the great, for your well-being and increase, we affirm you with praise—bountiful one, ready to come, who has arrived. By sacrifices and by inspired songs you foster the universal human striving; you further the Maruts: I sing to you with homage and with the mantra-utterance.

Mantra 18

ये पातयन्ते अज्मभिर्गिरीणां स्नुभिरेषाम् । यज्ञं महिष्वणीनां सुम्नं तुविष्वणीनां प्राध्वरे ॥

Those who speed with their impetuous strides along the mountains, with their streaming powers—may their sacrifice go forward in the journey; may the bliss of the great-sounding ones, the mighty-sounding ones, increase in the rite.

Mantra 19

प्रभङ्गं दुर्मतीनामिन्द्र शविष्ठा भर । रयिमस्मभ्यं युज्यं चोदयन्मते ज्येष्ठं चोदयन्मते ॥

O Indra, most mighty in force, bring for us the breaking of the hostile crooked thoughts; and impel toward us the Rayi—fit to be yoked to the work of the soul—impel the supreme and eldest power of plenitude within our awakened intention.

Mantra 20

सनितः सुसनितरुग्र चित्र चेतिष्ठ सूनृत । प्रासहा सम्राट् सहुरिं सहन्तं भुज्युं वाजेषु पूर्व्यम् ॥

O strong and luminous Winner, most discerning and true in speech, overpowering and sovereign—conquer the assailing power; uphold for us the ancient Enjoyer in the fields of Vāja, the plenitude of effective force.

Mantra 21

आ स एतु य ईवदाँ अदेवः पूर्तमाददे । यथा चिद्वशो अश्व्यः पृथुश्रवसि कानीतेऽस्या व्युष्याददे ॥

Let him come—he who, though not moving with the gods, yet takes the full offering; even as Vaśa the horseman, in broad-famed Kāṇīta, took her at the dawning-out.

Mantra 22

षष्टिं सहस्राश्व्यस्यायुतासनमुष्ट्रानां विंशतिं शता । दश श्यावीनां शता दश त्र्यरुषीणां दश गवां सहस्रा ॥

Sixty thousand of the horse-force, and ten-thousands as the seat of attainment; of camels, twenty hundreds; of the dark ones, ten hundreds; of the three-reddened, ten hundreds; of cows, ten thousands—so is the measured plenitude gathered.

Mantra 23

दश श्यावा ऋधद्रयो वीतवारास आशवः । मथ्रा नेमिं नि वावृतुः ॥

Ten dark powers, rich in plenitude, swift and winning their chosen boons, turned down the rim like churners—setting the wheel of movement into the right rotation.

Mantra 24

दानासः पृथुश्रवसः कानीतस्य सुराधसः । रथं हिरण्ययं ददन्मंहिष्ठः सूरिरभूद्वर्षिष्ठमकृत श्रवः ॥

These gifts of broad-famed Kāṇīta, rich in right abundance: giving a golden chariot, he became the most bountiful lord; he made the fame most raining—an outpouring of lasting luminous renown.

Mantra 25

आ नो वायो महे तने याहि मखाय पाजसे । वयं हि ते चकृमा भूरि दावने सद्यश्चिन्महि दावने ॥

Come to us, O Vāyu, for the great extension; come for the sacrifice and for the shining fullness of energy. For we have fashioned much for your giving—yes, even immediately we have made a vast field for your gift to descend.

Mantra 26

यो अश्वेभिर्वहते वस्त उस्रास्त्रिः सप्त सप्ततीनाम् । एभिः सोमेभिः सोमसुद्भिः सोमपा दानाय शुक्रपूतपाः ॥

He who comes borne by the horses and dwells with the shining dawn-cows—three times seven of the seventies—by these Soma-pressings, O Soma-drinker, come for the giving, you who drink the clarified and purified brilliance.

Mantra 27

यो म इमं चिदु त्मनामन्दच्चित्रं दावने । अरट्वे अक्षे नहुषे सुकृत्वनि सुकृत्तराय सुक्रतुः ॥

He who even to me gladdened this very self for a shining giving—at the turning axle, for Nahuṣa—he of good doing, for the better-doer, the one of luminous will.

Mantra 28

उचथ्ये वपुषि यः स्वराळुत वायो घृतस्नाः । अश्वेषितं रजेषितं शुनेषितं प्राज्म तदिदं नु तत् ॥

In the uttered hymn, he who is self-ruling in form—and you too, O Vāyu, bathed in ghee-like brightness—driven by the horse-force, driven by the wide spaces, driven by the hound-instinct: forward is the course; this indeed is That, now, here.

Mantra 29

अध प्रियमिषिराय षष्टिं सहस्रासनम् । अश्वानामिन्न वृष्णाम् ॥

Then, to the beloved impeller (Iṣirā), there comes a wide seat of plenitude—sixty thousand—like the overflowing strength of the stallions: a foundation for the soul’s onward movement.

Mantra 30

गावो न यूथमुप यन्ति वध्रय उप मा यन्ति वध्रयः ॥

As cows move toward their herd, so the powers called Vádhraya draw near—yes, they draw near to me—bringing the converging energies that gather the scattered being into unity.

Mantra 31

अध यच्चारथे गणे शतमुष्ट्राँ अचिक्रदत् । अध श्वित्नेषु विंशतिं शता ॥

Then, when (the force) moved with the host, it set in motion a hundred camels; then again, among the bright ones it brought two thousand—signs of multiplied capacities released for the journey and for the increase of luminous energies.

Mantra 32

शतं दासे बल्बूथे विप्रस्तरुक्ष आ ददे । ते ते वायविमे जना मदन्तीन्द्रगोपा मदन्ति देवगोपाः ॥

A hundred, to the servant Balbūtha, the inspired one Tarukṣa gave. These people, O Vāyu, rejoice—guarded by Indra they rejoice, guarded by the Gods they rejoice—when the life-breath and the luminous powers secure the inner community.

Mantra 33

अध स्या योषणा मही प्रतीची वशमश्व्यम् । अधिरुक्मा वि नीयते ॥

Then that mighty Woman-Power turns back toward us, bringing mastery over the steed-force; adorned with the golden light, she is led forth—an image of the soul guided into luminous sovereignty over its energies.
