This hymn from the Kāṇva collection opens in the luminous imagery of Uṣas, the true Dawn who arrives from afar and spreads her beams in every direction, awakening life and right movement. As the hymn proceeds, the praise-frame broadens into an Aśvin-oriented petition for thriving—cattle, offspring, strength, and nourishing “iṣ” (increase)—and culminates by contrasting the true path of gain with empty display, commending generous patrons (the Cedayas) as exemplars of right progress.
Mantra 1
दूरादिहेव यत्सत्यरुणप्सुरशिश्वितत् । वि भानुं विश्वधातनत् ॥
From far away, as if here before us, the true one, the ruddy-flashing, has gleamed; she has spread her beam in every way.
Mantra 2
नृवद्दस्रा मनोयुजा रथेन पृथुपाजसा । सचेथे अश्विनोषसम् ॥
O wonder-working Aśvins, yoked by the mind, with your wide-radiant chariot you accompany the Dawn, moving with the human-facing power.
Mantra 3
युवाभ्यां वाजिनीवसू प्रति स्तोमा अदृक्षत । वाचं दूतो यथोहिषे ॥
To you two, O possessors of dynamic plenitude, the hymns have looked forth in answer; as a messenger, speech comes to you, taking its seat in you.
Mantra 4
पुरुप्रिया ण ऊतये पुरुमन्द्रा पुरूवसू । स्तुषे कण्वासो अश्विना ॥
Much-beloved for our help, much-delighting, rich in abiding plenitudes—thus we, the Kaṇvas, affirm the Aśvins in praise.
Mantra 5
मंहिष्ठा वाजसातमेषयन्ता शुभस्पती । गन्तारा दाशुषो गृहम् ॥
Most bountiful, most victorious in the winning of force, urging onward—O lords of beauty—come to the house of the giver (the one who offers).
Mantra 6
ता सुदेवाय दाशुषे सुमेधामवितारिणीम् । घृतैर्गव्यूतिमुक्षतम् ॥
Pour out for the giver to the Good-God the rich and luminous intelligence that bears us safely across; and with the clarified light-oil anoint and strengthen the ‘cow-path’—the track of illumining rays within us.
Mantra 7
आ नः स्तोममुप द्रवत्तूयं श्येनेभिराशुभिः । यातमश्वेभिरश्विना ॥
Run swiftly toward our hymn of aspiration; come with your rapid hawks—powers of keen flight—and arrive, O Aśvins, with your horses, the forces that carry the soul forward.
Mantra 8
येभिस्तिस्रः परावतो दिवो विश्वानि रोचना । त्रीँरक्तून्परिदीयथः ॥
With those powers by which you traverse the three far regions and all the luminous spaces of heaven, you circle through the three active times—moving around and mastering the rhythms of our becoming.
Mantra 9
उत नो गोमतीरिष उत सातीरहर्विदा । वि पथः सातये सितम् ॥
And grant us impulses rich in rays of knowledge, and victories that know the Day; make wide and clear the paths for our attainment, so the soul may walk in the order of success.
Mantra 10
आ नो गोमन्तमश्विना सुवीरं सुरथं रयिम् । वोळ्हमश्वावतीरिषः ॥
Bring to us, O Aśvins, a fullness rich in rays, rich in heroic energies, and with a right-moving chariot—bring the rayi, the plenitude of being, carried by the horse-powers of our impulsions.
Mantra 11
वावृधाना शुभस्पती दस्रा हिरण्यवर्तनी । पिबतं सोम्यं मधु ॥
Ever increasing, lords of beauty and harmonious power, O wondrous ones with golden turning courses—drink the soma-honey, the delight that refines and uplifts the consciousness.
Mantra 12
अस्मभ्यं वाजिनीवसू मघवद्भ्यश्च सप्रथः । छर्दिर्यन्तमदाभ्यम् ॥
For us—and for all who are rich in the will to give—O lords of plenitude and victorious force, bring a wide sheltering peace; bring the unassailable protection that holds the being safe.
Mantra 13
नि षु ब्रह्म जनानां याविष्टं तूयमा गतम् । मो ष्वन्याँ उपारतम् ॥
To the inspired word of the peoples come down swiftly—come at once; do not turn aside toward other calls, but draw near here where the soul’s utterance is ready.
Mantra 14
अस्य पिबतमश्विना युवं मदस्य चारुणः । मध्वो रातस्य धिष्ण्या ॥
Drink of this; you two are the fit enjoyers of the beautiful ecstasy—drink of the given honey-delight, O enthroned powers, and let it establish its right working within us.
Mantra 15
अस्मे आ वहतं रयिं शतवन्तं सहस्रिणम् । पुरुक्षुं विश्वधायसम् ॥
Bring to us the rayi, a plenitude that multiplies in hundreds and thousands—abundant in many growths—supporting all our powers and sustaining the whole being.
Mantra 16
पुरुत्रा चिद्धि वां नरा विह्वयन्ते मनीषिणः । वाघद्भिरश्विना गतम् ॥
Truly, in many places the illumined thinkers call you, O two heroic powers. O Aśvins, come with the seers’ uplifted utterance (that bears the offering) into our being.
Mantra 17
जनासो वृक्तबर्हिषो हविष्मन्तो अरंकृतः । युवां हवन्ते अश्विना ॥
The peoples, with the strewn sacred grass made ready, bearing the offering and rightly prepared, call you two, O Aśvins—so may your powers answer in us.
Mantra 18
अस्माकमद्य वामयं स्तोमो वाहिष्ठो अन्तमः । युवाभ्यां भूत्वश्विना ॥
Today this hymn of ours for you is the most carrying, the most intimate; O Aśvins, may it become a living link to you two, drawing your force into us.
Mantra 19
यो ह वां मधुनो दृतिराहितो रथचर्षणे । ततः पिबतमश्विना ॥
That skin-bag of honeyed sweetness which is set out for you, O masters of the moving chariot—drink from it, O Aśvins. Receive the delight that strengthens the journey of the soul.
Mantra 20
तेन नो वाजिनीवसू पश्वे तोकाय शं गवे । वहतं पीवरीरिषः ॥
By that (delight you accept), O possessors of plenitude of force, bring to us nurturing increase—well-being for our energies, for our growing soul-child, and for the luminous herds (rays of knowledge).
Mantra 21
उत नो दिव्या इष उत सिन्धूँरहर्विदा । अप द्वारेव वर्षथः ॥
And for us pour down the heavenly impulsions; and (open) the rivers of flow by the knowers of the Day—pour them out as if unbarring doors, O Aśvins.
Mantra 22
कदा वां तौग्र्यो विधत्समुद्रे जहितो नरा । यद्वां रथो विभिष्पतात् ॥
When will Taugra, abandoned in the ocean, serve you, O two heroes—when your chariot flies with its powers? (So too) may your swift rescue reach us in our peril.
Mantra 23
युवं कण्वाय नासत्या ऋपिरिप्ताय हर्म्ये । शश्वदूतीर्दशस्यथः ॥
You two, O Nāsatyas, ever grant your helps to Kaṇva—unhurt, unmaimed—in his high dwelling; thus you continually cherish the steadfast seeker.
Mantra 24
ताभिरा यातमूतिभिर्नव्यसीभिः सुशस्तिभिः । यद्वां वृषण्वसू हुवे ॥
With those helps—ever new and beautifully effective—come to us, when I call you, O vigorous bringers of plenitude. Let your fresh powers enter our work.
Mantra 25
यथा चित्कण्वमावतं प्रियमेधमुपस्तुतम् । अत्रिं शिञ्जारमश्विना ॥
As you once came to the aid of Kaṇva, of Priyamedha praised in the rite, and of Atri in the pressing strait—so, O Aśvins, come now to our call with the same saving power.
Mantra 26
यथोत कृत्व्ये धनेंऽशुं गोष्वगस्त्यम् । यथा वाजेषु सोभरिम् ॥
As (you once helped) in the hard-to-win gain, and as among the luminous herds you upheld Agastya, so too in the fields of plenitude empower Sobharī—so may your force work for us in every striving.
Mantra 27
एतावद्वां वृषण्वसू अतो वा भूयो अश्विना । गृणन्तः सुम्नमीमहे ॥
So much (we have uttered) to you, O strong-bringing Lords; and now, O Aśvins, for still more we seek—praising, we ask for your glad grace, the inward happiness that sets the being right.
Mantra 28
रथं हिरण्यवन्धुरं हिरण्याभीशुमश्विना । आ हि स्थाथो दिविस्पृशम् ॥
On the chariot yoked with golden harness, with golden reins, O Aśvins—stand forth and come: your movement touches heaven; let that higher reach enter our present journey.
Mantra 29
हिरण्ययी वां रभिरीषा अक्षो हिरण्ययः । उभा चक्रा हिरण्यया ॥
Golden is your chariot-frame, golden the pole, golden the axle; both wheels are golden—let this total luminosity make our path smooth and whole, without inner fracture.
Mantra 30
तेन नो वाजिनीवसू परावतश्चिदा गतम् । उपेमां सुष्टुतिं मम ॥
With that (same saving power), O lords of victorious plenitudes, come to us even from the farthest distance; draw near to this well-shaped praise of mine, and let it become a channel for your increase in us.
Mantra 31
आ वहेथे पराकात्पूर्वीरश्नन्तावश्विना । इषो दासीरमर्त्या ॥
Come driving from the far beyond, O Aśvins, enjoying the ancient offerings; O immortals, grant us the streams of iṣ—nourishing impulsions that feed the soul’s march.
Mantra 32
आ नो द्युम्नैरा श्रवोभिरा राया यातमश्विना । पुरुश्चन्द्रा नासत्या ॥
Come to us with illumined powers, with wideness of fame, with the fullness of being; O Aśvins, many-rayed Nāsatyas, bring the shining multiplicity that makes our nature a clear field for truth.
Mantra 33
एह वां प्रुषितप्सवो वयो वहन्तु पर्णिनः । अच्छा स्वध्वरं जनम् ॥
Hither let the winged powers, rich with sparkling strength, carry you; come to the people whose sacrifice is well-ordered—so the right rhythm of offering may become a right rhythm of the inner life.
Mantra 34
रथं वामनुगायसं य इषा वर्तते सह । न चक्रमभि बाधते ॥
Your chariot moves in harmony with the chant; it turns with the nourishing impulsion as its companion, and it does not jar against the wheel—so may our movement be without inner obstruction, aligned to the right rhythm.
Mantra 35
हिरण्ययेन रथेन द्रवत्पाणिभिरश्वैः । धीजवना नासत्या ॥
With the golden chariot, with horses whose very ‘hands’ are swift, O Nāsatyas, rapid in inspired thought—enter our being and make our intelligence a speed of light that carries the life forward in truth.
Mantra 36
युवं मृगं जागृवांसं स्वदथो वा वृषण्वसू । ता नः पृङ्क्तमिषा रयिम् ॥
You two, O Ashvins—strong in the pouring of delight—take joy in the awakened Seeker within us; then mingle for us, with the power of inner nourishment, the plenitude of being (rayi) into our life.
Mantra 37
ता मे अश्विना सनीनां विद्यातं नवानाम् । यथा चिच्चैद्यः कशुः शतमुष्ट्रानां ददत्सहस्रा दश गोनाम् ॥
You two Ashvins, discern for me the winning of the ancient and the ever-new; so that, as Caidya Kaśu once gave in largeness, you may grant us the abundant increase—powers and light-rays in their thousands and tens.
Mantra 38
यो मे हिरण्यसंदृशो दश राज्ञो अमंहत । अधस्पदा इच्चैद्यस्य कृष्टयश्चर्मम्ना अभितो जनाः ॥
He who enlarged for me the golden-seeming powers of ten kings—so that even the peoples of Caidya, set low in their steps, stood encompassed by the law of protection: thus the divine increase establishes a guarded order around the seeker.
Mantra 39
माकिरेना पथा गाद्येनेमे यन्ति चेदयः । अन्यो नेत्सूरिरोहते भूरिदावत्तरो जनः ॥
Let none at all go by this path of mere song-display; these Cedayas move by another way. No other patron truly surpasses them: they are the people more abundant in giving—an image of the soul’s right movement that chooses the true track of increase.
It begins with clear Dawn (Uṣas) imagery—ruddy light and spreading beams—but later verses function as Aśvin petitions for nourishment and well-being. Many Mandala 8 hymns move fluidly between closely linked morning deities.
Cosmically it is sunrise filling the world with light; inwardly it points to clarity spreading through the mind, making right perception and right action possible.
That closing praise highlights that true prosperity is tied to right conduct and generosity. The hymn contrasts genuine increase and giving with mere show, presenting worthy patrons as models of the ‘right path.’
