Indra (with Agni as the invoked support in the opening condition)

This hymn is a sustained invitation to Indra to come to the Soma-pressing, drink the pressed draught, and bestow strength, victory, and desirable wealth upon the sacrificers. It opens by establishing the proper ritual condition—Agni kindled and the barhis spread—by which Indra becomes the youthful friend of the worshippers, then moves through repeated calls for Indra’s exhilaration (mada) and generosity, concluding with a request for the choicest treasure known through Indra’s prior gifts.

Mantras

Mantra 1

आ घा ये अग्निमिन्धते स्तृणन्ति बर्हिरानुषक् । येषामिन्द्रो युवा सखा ॥

Yea, those who kindle the divine Fire (Agni) and spread the inner seat of offering in right succession—of them Indra, the ever-youthful Power, becomes the companion-friend within.

Mantra 2

बृहन्निदिध्म एषां भूरि शस्तं पृथुः स्वरुः । येषामिन्द्रो युवा सखा ॥

Great indeed is their fuel of the Fire; abundant is their word of praise; broad is their luminous opening—of such, Indra the ever-youthful becomes the companion-friend.

Mantra 3

अयुद्ध इद्युधा वृतं शूर आजति सत्वभिः । येषामिन्द्रो युवा सखा ॥

Though seemingly unarmed, yet by battle he drives back the enclosing obstruction; the Hero charges with his powers of being—of such, Indra the ever-youthful is the companion-friend.

Mantra 4

आ बुन्दं वृत्रहा ददे जातः पृच्छद्वि मातरम् । क उग्राः के ह शृण्विरे ॥

The slayer of the Coverer set the foundation in place; born into the work, he questioned his Mother: ‘Who are the fierce powers? Who indeed are they that hear?’

Mantra 5

प्रति त्वा शवसी वदद्गिरावप्सो न योधिषत् । यस्ते शत्रुत्वमाचके ॥

Against thee, O Power, the speaking energies contend—like waters in tumult; but he who would assume hostility to thee is exposed and undone.

Mantra 6

उत त्वं मघवञ्छृणु यस्ते वष्टि ववक्षि तत् । यद्वीळयासि वीळु तत् ॥

And thou, O Maghavan, do hear: what one seeks from thee, that thou canst grant; and what thou holdest back, that too is held back—so let thy will turn wholly to our fulfilment.

Mantra 7

यदाजिं यात्याजिकृदिन्द्रः स्वश्वयुरुप । रथीतमो रथीनाम् ॥

When Indra, the maker of victory, goes forth to the contest, desiring his own steeds, he comes near—most charioteer of charioteers—bringing the mastering force for our advance.

Mantra 8

वि षु विश्वा अभियुजो वज्रिन्विष्वग्यथा वृह । भवा नः सुश्रवस्तमः ॥

Disperse utterly all who press upon us in assault, O wielder of the thunderbolt, in every direction; and become for us the most perfectly heard-of—most manifest in victorious fame and effective help.

Mantra 9

अस्माकं सु रथं पुर इन्द्रः कृणोतु सातये । न यं धूर्वन्ति धूर्तयः ॥

Let Indra make our chariot good and foremost for the winning; a chariot that the deceivers cannot overthrow or confound.

Mantra 10

वृज्याम ते परि द्विषोऽरं ते शक्र दावने । गमेमेदिन्द्र गोमतः ॥

We would clear away the haters from around thee; sufficient art thou, O Shakra, for the giving. May we indeed come, O Indra, to the luminous riches—rich in rays of knowledge.

Mantra 11

शनैश्चिद्यन्तो अद्रिवोऽश्वावन्तः शतग्विनः । विवक्षणा अनेहसः ॥

Even if they advance slowly, O Bearer of the pressing-stone, they come with the steeds of force—possessors of a hundredfold gain; they are wide-opening powers, unhurried in their movement.

Mantra 12

ऊर्ध्वा हि ते दिवेदिवे सहस्रा सूनृता शता । जरितृभ्यो विमंहते ॥

For yours, day by day, are uplifted—by the thousand, by the hundred—true and luminous words of right inspiration; they widen into bounty for the singers.

Mantra 13

विद्मा हि त्वा धनंजयमिन्द्र दृळ्हा चिदारुजम् । आदारिणं यथा गयम् ॥

We know you, O Indra, as the conqueror of the plenitudes: you shatter even what is firm; you are the breaker-open, as (one breaks open) Gaya.

Mantra 14

ककुहं चित्त्वा कवे मन्दन्तु धृष्णविन्दवः । आ त्वा पणिं यदीमहे ॥

Even in the farthest height, O Seer, may the bold drops of Soma exhilarate you, when we would draw you near against the Pani within us.

Mantra 15

यस्ते रेवाँ अदाशुरिः प्रममर्ष मघत्तये । तस्य नो वेद आ भर ॥

He who, rich in soul-substance, has offered to you and has pressed forward for your giving—bring to us the knowledge of his way (of attainment).

Mantra 16

इम उ त्वा वि चक्षते सखाय इन्द्र सोमिनः । पुष्टावन्तो यथा पशुम् ॥

These companions who hold the Soma look upon you with discernment, O Indra, fostering you as one fosters a growing power in the being.

Mantra 17

उत त्वाबधिरं वयं श्रुत्कर्णं सन्तमूतये । दूरादिह हवामहे ॥

And we call you—never deaf, hearing with an awakened ear—for our help; from afar we summon you here.

Mantra 18

यच्छुश्रूया इमं हवं दुर्मर्षं चक्रिया उत । भवेरापिर्नो अन्तमः ॥

If you would truly hear this call—hard to withstand—and would act, then become for us the nearest sheltering presence.

Mantra 19

यच्चिद्धि ते अपि व्यथिर्जगन्वांसो अमन्महि । गोदा इदिन्द्र बोधि नः ॥

Even if there is some wavering in you, we who journey have understood it; yet, as the giver of the rays, O Indra, awaken to us.

Mantra 20

आ त्वा रम्भं न जिव्रयो ररभ्मा शवसस्पते । उश्मसि त्वा सधस्थ आ ॥

We have seized you as one seizes a support, O Lord of force; we desire you here in the common seat of being.

Mantra 21

स्तोत्रमिन्द्राय गायत पुरुनृम्णाय सत्वने । नकिर्यं वृण्वते युधि ॥

Sing the hymn to Indra, the Power of many manly strengths, the embodiment of victorious force; for none can choose and master Him in the inner battle.

Mantra 22

अभि त्वा वृषभा सुते सुतं सृजामि पीतये । तृम्पा व्यश्नुही मदम् ॥

Toward thee, O Bull of force, when the Soma is pressed, I send forth the pressed draught for thy drinking; be filled, and pervade and attain the rapture-power.

Mantra 23

मा त्वा मूरा अविष्यवो मोपहस्वान आ दभन् । माकीं ब्रह्मद्विषो वनः ॥

Let not the foolish, the ill-willed, nor the mockers deceive thee; let not at any time the haters of the Word seize thy power.

Mantra 24

इह त्वा गोपरीणसा महे मन्दन्तु राधसे । सरो गौरो यथा पिब ॥

Here may the rich, cow-abounding offerings gladden thee for the great giving; drink, like the tawny one at the lake, in full content.

Mantra 25

या वृत्रहा परावति सना नवा च चुच्युवे । ता संसत्सु प्र वोचत ॥

Those deeds of the Vṛtra-slayer, done in the far beyond—old and ever new—proclaim them forth in the assemblies.

Mantra 26

अपिबत्कद्रुवः सुतमिन्द्रः सहस्रबाह्वे । अत्रादेदिष्ट पौंस्यम् ॥

Indra drank the pressed Soma at Kadrū; there he made his manly power shine forth, in the thousand-armed might.

Mantra 27

सत्यं तत्तुर्वशे यदौ विदानो अह्नवाय्यम् । व्यानट् तुर्वणे शमि ॥

True was that for Turvaśa and Yadu: knowing, he spread out the swift-moving help; he reached wide to Turvaṇa for peace and right ease.

Mantra 28

तरणिं वो जनानां त्रदं वाजस्य गोमतः । समानमु प्र शंसिषम् ॥

I will proclaim the same Indra to you as the crosser for peoples, the giver of the sustaining plenitude of force rich in rays of light.

Mantra 29

ऋभुक्षणं न वर्तव उक्थेषु तुग्र्यावृधम् । इन्द्रं सोमे सचा सुते ॥

Like Ṛbhukṣaṇa for our turning, in the hymns—Indra who increases the Tūgrya—together with the pressed Soma.

Mantra 30

यः कृन्तदिद्वि योन्यं त्रिशोकाय गिरिं पृथुम् । गोभ्यो गातुं निरेतवे ॥

He who indeed cut open the womb, the broad mountain, for the triple-brightness, so that for the Rays (cows) a path might go out and be released.

Mantra 31

यद्दधिषे मनस्यसि मन्दानः प्रेदियक्षसि । मा तत्करिन्द्र मृळय ॥

Whatever intent you place within your mind, O Indra, exhilarated you press forward to achieve it—do not make that a cause of harm to us; be gracious and heal us.

Mantra 32

दभ्रं चिद्धि त्वावतः कृतं शृण्वे अधि क्षमि । जिगात्विन्द्र ते मनः ॥

Even a small act done by one who has you is heard upon the earth; may your mind, O Indra, come swiftly toward us (to our call).

Mantra 33

तवेदु ताः सुकीर्तयोऽसन्नुत प्रशस्तयः । यदिन्द्र मृळयासि नः ॥

Yours indeed are those good-fames and true praises—when, O Indra, you become gracious to us.

Mantra 34

मा न एकस्मिन्नागसि मा द्वयोरुत त्रिषु । वधीर्मा शूर भूरिषु ॥

Do not strike us for a single fault, nor for two, nor even for three; do not slay us, O hero, for the many (imperfections) in us.

Mantra 35

बिभया हि त्वावत उग्रादभिप्रभङ्गिणः । दस्मादहमृतीषहः ॥

For I fear the violent breakers when one is without you; but with you—O wondrous one—I become a bearer who can endure the assaults against the right.

Mantra 36

मा सख्युः शूनमा विदे मा पुत्रस्य प्रभूवसो । आवृत्वद्भूतु ते मनः ॥

Let me not find emptiness in friendship, nor in the mastery of a son (or in the power that should sustain lineage); may your mind turn back toward us and become returning and present.

Mantra 37

को नु मर्या अमिथितः सखा सखायमब्रवीत् । जहा को अस्मदीषते ॥

Who indeed, O young hero, the unbeguiled friend, spoke to his friend: ‘Leave him—who is it that seeks to harm us?’

Mantra 38

एवारे वृषभा सुतेऽसिन्वन्भूर्यावयः । श्वघ्नीव निवता चरन् ॥

Thus, O bull of power, in the pressed Soma you move, bestowing abundant helps; like a hound-slayer you roam in the low-lying places (seeking out and destroying the lurking hostile).

Mantra 39

आ त एता वचोयुजा हरी गृभ्णे सुमद्रथा । यदीं ब्रह्मभ्य इद्ददः ॥

I seize for you these two tawny powers yoked to the Word, O you of glad chariot, when you indeed give them to the seers of the sacred utterance.

Mantra 40

भिन्धि विश्वा अप द्विषः परि बाधो जही मृधः । वसु स्पार्हं तदा भर ॥

Break away all hatreds; drive off the pressures; slay the hostile assailments. Bring then to us the desirable wealth—fullness of being and force.

Mantra 41

यद्वीळाविन्द्र यत्स्थिरे यत्पर्शाने पराभृतम् । वसु स्पार्हं तदा भर ॥

Whatever has been placed far away in the stronghold, O Indra, whatever is held fast in the stable foundation, whatever is carried beyond in the wide-spreading field—bring that here to us: the desirable treasure of being.

Mantra 42

यस्य ते विश्वमानुषो भूरेर्दत्तस्य वेदति । वसु स्पार्हं तदा भर ॥

He who, among all men, truly knows the abundance of what you have given—bring to us that desirable treasure: the real wealth of fullness of being.

Frequently Asked Questions

Agni is the ritual prerequisite: when the fire is kindled and the offering-space is prepared, the sacrifice becomes “ready,” and Indra is invited into that prepared order as the main recipient of Soma.

The hymn asks Indra to come to the Soma-pressing, drink the offering, become empowered through exhilaration (mada), and then grant strength, protection, victory, and desirable wealth to the worshippers.

It means Indra is portrayed as a constant, renewing ally—fresh in power and quick to help—especially for those who perform the ritual sincerely and in the right sequence.
