Inside Sukta 33

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A petition to the Father of the Maruts for grace, asking not to be driven away from the Sun’s vision and for thriving heroic force and progeny.

  2. Development

Praise intensifies: Rudra is named as tawny, bull-like, brilliant, and mighty; salutations multiply as the hymn seeks to turn fierce power into protective, purifying favor.

  3. Climax

The hymn openly proclaims Rudra’s “fierce Name” while simultaneously bowing to him as the remover of inner defilement—uniting dread and devotion in a single act of surrender.

  4. Where it settles

A final plea: may Rudra not be angered nor strike; may he hear the call, awaken here, and grant the community vast speech and heroic strength in the assembly.

The deity: Rudra

  • Cosmic functionHe governs storm-like, sudden and transformative forces—both destructive and medicinal—guarding the boundaries of life, health, and vitality, and releasing purification through intense power.
