“What you have said is fair, and it pleases my mind as well: it is indeed improper to go where no invitation has been sent. Dākṣa has called all his daughters; yet the enmity he bears toward me you too have forgotten. In Brahmā’s assembly I felt keen sorrow; and for that cause he still heaps dishonour upon me. If you go without being asked, O Bhavānī, neither decorum remains, nor affection, nor even a sense of shame. True, it is one’s friend’s, lord’s, father’s, or teacher’s house; to go there unannounced is no great doubt. Yet where any opposition is harboured, going thither brings no welfare. In many ways Śambhu counselled her; but, being under the sway of destiny, discernment did not enter her heart. The Lord said: ‘Go, if you will, though you are not invited; yet this course does not please me as a good act.’”

When Bhavānī reached her father’s house, none, for fear of Dakṣa, dared to show her due honor. Yet her mother met her with reverence, and her sisters too came smiling warmly. Dakṣa asked her nothing of her welfare; at the very sight of Satī, all his limbs burned within. Satī went in and looked about; then she perceived—nowhere was Śambhu allotted any place. Then her mind recalled what Śaṅkara had forewarned; understanding it as an insult to her Lord, her heart was scorched. Never before had such sorrow seized her breast as did this grievous torment. Though the world holds many dreadful griefs, hardest of all is the dishonor of one’s lineage. Seeing this, Satī was inflamed with rage; her mother sought in many ways to counsel and restrain her.

“Hear me, O members of the assembly, O best of sages: whoever has uttered or hearkened to abuse of Shankara— that fruit shall he reap at once, every one of them; even the father shall bitterly repent. As for reviling a saint, Shambhu, or the Lord of Shri—wherever such words are heard, this is the rule of decorum: cut out the tongue of him who harbours them; and if that be not possible, then shut the ears and go not that way. Mahesha is the very Soul of the world, the foe of Tripura; the sire of the universe, beneficent to all. Yet my dull-witted father reviles Him—this body of mine is sprung from Daksha’s seed. For that cause I shall abandon it at once,”—thus fixing in her heart the Moon-crested, Bull-bannered Lord. So saying, by the fire of Yoga she burned her body; and through the whole sacrifice there arose a great cry of lamentation.”

All the tidings reached Shankara; and, in wrath, he dispatched Virabhadra. Going there, he wrought the ruin of the sacrifice, and to all the gods he duly rendered their rightful fruit. Thus became world-renowned the fate of Daksha—such is the end of any who turn away from Shambhu. This ancient tale the whole world knows; therefore I recount it in brief. As Sati lay dying she asked a boon of Hari: that through birth after birth her love might cleave to Shiva’s feet. For that cause she went to the house of Himagiri and, taking a body, was born as Parvati. From the time Uma came to the mountain-home, every accomplishment and prosperity spread there. Here and there the sages made fair hermitages; the snow-clad mountain granted them fitting abodes.

All the rivers flowed with sanctifying waters; birds, beasts, and bees—each and all—dwelt in gladness. Every creature cast away its native enmity; upon the mountain all were bound together in affection. That peak shone when Girijā came home, as though one had attained the treasure of Rāma-bhakti. Day by day new auspiciousness filled that house; Brahmā and the gods sang the glory of him whose fame is sung. Nārada learned the whole tidings, and in wonder set forth to the mountain-dwelling. The lord of the mountain paid him great honor—washing his feet and giving him a noble seat. With his wife he bowed his head at the sage’s feet; with the water of those feet he sprinkled the whole mansion. The mountain spoke much of his own good fortune, called his daughter, and set her at the sage’s feet.

Verse 133 (दोहा/सोरठा)

Verse 134 (चौपाई)

The sage spoke, smiling, in words at once profound and gentle: “Your daughter is a very mine of virtues. Fair, natural in grace, well-mannered and wise—her names are Umā, Ambikā, Bhavānī. Endowed with every auspicious mark, the maiden shall ever be dear to her lord. Her good fortune shall stand unshaken; through her, father and mother shall win renown. She shall be worshipped throughout the world; for one who serves her, nothing is hard to obtain. Remembering her name, women in the world shall mount the razor’s edge of wifely fidelity. Such is your well-marked daughter; now hear of a few shortcomings—two or four. She is without worldly accomplishments, without social standing, bereft of parents; detached, with all doubt cut away.”

Verse 135 (दोहा/सोरठा)

Hearing the sage’s words, Uma knew in her heart that they were true; the sorrow of the mountain-king and his queen was turned to joy. Even Narada himself did not fully know this hidden matter—such was the strange turn of the situation. All her companions, and Girija’s mother Maina, thrilled with rapture; their eyes brimmed with tears. A devarshi’s speech cannot be false; Uma treasured those words and kept them fast within her heart. Love for Shiva’s lotus-feet arose in her; yet her mind doubted, for the meeting seemed hard to attain. Knowing the hour unfit, she concealed her affection; a friend took her again and seated her in her lap. The devarshi’s utterance cannot be untrue—thus the wise couple and the prudent maidens pondered. Then, gathering courage in his heart, the mountain-lord said, “Tell me, O Lord—what remedy shall we adopt?”

kaha munīsa himavanta sunu jo bidhi likhā lilāra | deva danuja nara nāga muni kou na meṭanihāra ||68||

Yet I shall tell one remedy—if Providence but lend its aid, it will be accomplished. Even as I described the Bridegroom to you before, so shall Uma surely obtain Him; of that there is no doubt. Whatever faults men have alleged in that match, I take them all to be (in truth) with Shiva alone. If the marriage be with Shankara, then fault and merit alike are spoken of as one by all. If Hari can repose upon the serpent-bed, the wise lay no blame upon Him for it. The Sun and Fire consume essences of every kind; yet none calls them base. All waters, pure and impure, flow into the heavenly river; and no one names the Ganga unclean. In the truly Mighty Lord there is no defect—like the Sun, the Fire, and the sacred Ganga.

If one were to deem the water of the celestial Ganga as wine, no saint would ever consent to drink it. Even as the Ganga’s touch makes all things pure, so stands the difference between the Lord and what is not the Lord. Shambhu is, by nature, the all-competent God; in this marriage every manner of good is assured. Hard to propitiate—yet, ah, Mahesh is also swiftly pleased; still, one must bear the toil of seeking his grace. Should your daughter undertake austerity, Tripurari can even erase what is fated. Though boons are many in the world, for this there is none besides Shiva. Bestower of boons, breaker of the suppliant’s distress, ocean of compassion, delight of the servant’s heart— without Shiva’s resort, the wished-for fruit is not obtained, though one perform millions of yogas, recitations, and disciplines.

asa kahi nārada sumiri hari girijahi dīnhi asīsa | hoihi yaha kalyāna aba saṃsaya tajahu girīsa ||70||

kahi asa brahmabhavana muni gayau. āgila carita sunahu jasa bhayau.. patihi ekānta pāi kaha mainā. nātha na maiṁ samujhe muni bainā.. jauṁ gharu baru kulu hoi anūpā. kari-a bibāhu sutā anurūpā.. na ta kanyā baru rahau kuārī. kaṁta umā mama prāṇa-piārī.. jauṁ na milahi baru girijahi jogū. giri jaṛ sahaja kahihi sabu logū.. soi bicāri pati karehu bibāhū. jehiṁ na bahori hoi ura dāhū.. asa kahi pari carana dhari sīsā. बोले सहित saneha girīsā.. baru pāvaka pragaṭai sasi māhīṁ. nārada bacanu anyathā nāhīṁ..

So saying, the sage departed to Brahmā’s abode. Hear now what further befell. Finding her husband alone, Mainā spoke: “My lord, I cannot comprehend the sage’s words. If there be a house, a bridegroom, and a lineage beyond compare, then wed our daughter to one befitting her. Otherwise let the maiden remain unwedded; for Umā is dearer to me than life itself. If Girijā find not a worthy match, then all will readily call the mountain-folk dull and senseless. Therefore, reflect well and arrange the marriage, so that no burning remorse returns to the heart.” Having spoken thus, she fell at his feet and bowed her head. Then Girīśa (Śiva) replied with tender affection: “Even if fire should appear within the moon, Nārada’s word shall not prove false.”
