Indra

This Indra-hymn is a sustained stotra urging the singers to praise and “press forward” Indra through Soma, so his victorious power (vṛtrahan) becomes active among the worshippers. It celebrates Indra as world-conquering and most generous to the peoples, and repeatedly asks that his exhilarating might and strength-giving rapture enter the community.

Mantra 1

पान्तमा वो अन्धस इन्द्रमभि प्र गायत । विश्वासाहं शतक्रतुं मंहिष्ठं चर्षणीनाम् ॥

Sing forth toward Indra who is guarded and sustaining in the Soma-essence; chant to him—world-conquering, hundred-powered, most bountiful for the peoples—so that the inner strength may be secured.

Mantra 2

पुरुहूतं पुरुष्टुतं गाथान्यं सनश्रुतम् । इन्द्र इति ब्रवीतन ॥

Call him ‘Indra’—the much-invoked, the much-praised, the one fit for the song of the soul, the anciently heard: affirm that name in your utterance and make it living.

Mantra 3

इन्द्र इन्नो महानां दाता वाजानां नृतुः । महाँ अभिज्ञ्वा यमत् ॥

Indra indeed is for us the giver of the great things; he is the leader of plenitudes of force. May the mighty one, knowing our need, draw near and take us into his grasp.

Mantra 4

अपादु शिप्र्यन्धसः सुदक्षस्य प्रहोषिणः । इन्दोरिन्द्रो यवाशिरः ॥

Let Indra, the strong-jawed, drink up the Soma-essence—well-skilled and richly pressing—Indra of the Indu, whose head is mixed with the barley: may the delight be taken into his force for our victory.

Mantra 5

तम्वभि प्रार्चतेन्द्रं सोमस्य पीतये । तदिद्ध्यस्य वर्धनम् ॥

Him—Indra—chant forth and praise, for the drinking of Soma; for that indeed is his increase: by delight he grows in force within us.

Mantra 6

अस्य पीत्वा मदानां देवो देवस्यौजसा । विश्वाभि भुवना भुवत् ॥

Having drunk of these ecstasies, the god by the god’s own might becomes master over all worlds: the divine force pervades and takes possession of the whole field of becoming.

Mantra 7

त्यमु वः सत्रासाहं विश्वासु गीर्ष्वायतम् । आ च्यावयस्यूतये ॥

That ever-victorious Power we call to you—let him come in all our words of inspired utterance; draw him near for our protection and inner help.

Mantra 8

युध्मं सन्तमनर्वाणं सोमपामनपच्युतम् । नरमवार्यक्रतुम् ॥

The warrior-force, truly existent and unwearying, the drinker of Soma, never falling away—this Man of power whose will is irresistible, we affirm and invoke.

Mantra 9

शिक्षा ण इन्द्र राय आ पुरु विद्वाँ ऋचीषम । अवा नः पार्ये धने ॥

Teach us, O Indra, the way to the plenitudes of being; you who know abundantly and are master of the inspired word—carry us across in the wealth that lies beyond.

Mantra 10

अतश्चिदिन्द्र ण उपा याहि शतवाजया । इषा सहस्रवाजया ॥

Even from there, O Indra, come near to us—bringing the hundredfold plenitudes of force; come with the impulsion that bears a thousand powers.

Mantra 11

अयाम धीवतो धियोऽर्वद्भिः शक्र गोदरे । जयेम पृत्सु वज्रिवः ॥

We drive forward the thoughts of the illumined with swift powers; O Shakra, giver of the luminous herds—may we conquer in the battles, O wielder of the thunderbolt.

Mantra 12

वयमु त्वा शतक्रतो गावो न यवसेष्वा । उक्थेषु रणयामसि ॥

We, O Shatakratu, move toward you as the herds move toward their pasture; in our hymns we make you resound and take delight in your presence.

Mantra 13

विश्वा हि मर्त्यत्वनानुकामा शतक्रतो । अगन्म वज्रिन्नाशसः ॥

For all things desired in our mortal state, O Shatakratu—we have come, O Vajrin, with our hopes turned toward you.

Mantra 14

त्वे सु पुत्र शवसोऽवृत्रन्कामकातयः । न त्वामिन्द्राति रिच्यते ॥

In you, O son of Might, the slayer of obstruction, all satisfactions of desire find their fulfilment; none surpasses you, O Indra, in plenitude of power.

Mantra 15

स नो वृषन्त्सनिष्ठया सं घोरया द्रवित्न्वा । धियाविड्ढि पुरंध्या ॥

So then, O Bull of power, with your most winning force, gather for us the intense riches; pierce through by the illumined thought, O fulfiller who carries the plenitude.

यस्ते नूनं शतक्रतविन्द्र द्युम्नितमो मदः । तेन नूनं मदे मदेः ॥

That rapture of yours, O Indra of a hundred powers—the most luminous and triumphant—by that rapture now may you be rapturous within our ecstasy.

Mantra 17

यस्ते चित्रश्रवस्तमो य इन्द्र वृत्रहन्तमः । य ओजोदातमो मदः ॥

That rapture of yours—most rich in luminous inspirations, O Indra; most puissant in the slaying of the Coverer; most giving of strength—may it be active in us.

Mantra 18

विद्मा हि यस्ते अद्रिवस्त्वादत्तः सत्य सोमपाः । विश्वासु दस्म कृष्टिषु ॥

For we know the one who is truly given to you, O holder of the stone; O true Soma-drinker, O wondrous one—among all the peoples he is yours.

Mantra 19

इन्द्राय मद्वने सुतं परि ष्टोभन्तु नो गिरः । अर्कमर्चन्तु कारवः ॥

For Indra, the lord of rapture, the pressed Soma—let our words resound all around; let the singers chant the flaming hymn of illumination.

Mantra 20

यस्मिन्विश्वा अधि श्रियो रणन्ति सप्त संसदः । इन्द्रं सुते हवामहे ॥

In whom all the splendors take their seat and rejoice—in the seven assemblies of the being—Indra we call in the pressed Soma.

Mantra 21

त्रिकद्रुकेषु चेतनं देवासो यज्ञमत्नत । तमिद्वर्धन्तु नो गिरः ॥

In the three Kadru-bowls they stretched the sacrifice into wakeful consciousness; may our utterances indeed increase that awakened power.

Mantra 22

आ त्वा विशन्त्विन्दवः समुद्रमिव सिन्धवः । न त्वामिन्द्राति रिच्यते ॥

Let the Soma-drops enter into you as rivers enter the ocean; none, O Indra, can surpass or overfill you.

Mantra 23

विव्यक्थ महिना वृषन्भक्षं सोमस्य जागृवे । य इन्द्र जठरेषु ते ॥

By your greatness you have made manifest, O Bull, the nourishment of Soma for the wakeful one—this that is in your bellies, O Indra.

Mantra 24

अरं त इन्द्र कुक्षये सोमो भवतु वृत्रहन् । अरं धामभ्य इन्दवः ॥

Enough and fully may the Soma be for your belly, O Indra the Vṛtra-slayer; enough and fully may the Soma-drops be for your abodes and states of power.

Mantra 25

अरमश्वाय गायति श्रुतकक्षो अरं गवे । अरमिन्द्रस्य धाम्ने ॥

Fittingly he sings for the Horse, fittingly for the Cow; fittingly for Indra’s station of power sings Śruta-kakṣa.

Mantra 26

अरं हि ष्म सुतेषु णः सोमेष्विन्द्र भूषसि । अरं ते शक्र दावने ॥

Truly, in our pressed Soma-offerings you are fully at home, O Indra; in the Soma-draughts you take delight. Fully, O Shakra, are you for the giving.

Mantra 27

पराकात्ताच्चिदद्रिवस्त्वां नक्षन्त नो गिरः । अरं गमाम ते वयम् ॥

Even from far away, O wielder of the stone-force, our inspired utterances reach you; may we be fully sufficient and arrive to you—may our being attain your presence.

Mantra 28

एवा ह्यसि वीरयुरेवा शूर उत स्थिरः । एवा ते राध्यं मनः ॥

Thus indeed you are: a seeker and awakener of the heroic powers; thus you are the warrior and the steadfast; thus, too, is your mind—fit for accomplishment, sure in its fulfilment.

Mantra 29

एवा रातिस्तुवीमघ विश्वेभिर्धायि धातृभिः । अधा चिदिन्द्र मे सचा ॥

Thus your giving, O vast-bounteous One, is set in place by all the upholding powers; therefore even now, O Indra, be with me—stand by my endeavour.

Mantra 30

मो षु ब्रह्मेव तन्द्रयुर्भुवो वाजानां पते । मत्स्वा सुतस्य गोमतः ॥

Do not, like a drowsy priestly mind, become slack; O lord of plenitudes, take delight—be exhilarated by the pressed Soma rich in luminous rays (cows of light).

Mantra 31

मा न इन्द्राभ्यादिशः सूरो अक्तुष्वा यमन् । त्वा युजा वनेम तत् ॥

Let not hostile directions press upon us, O Indra, as the sun moves through the nights; with you as yoke-fellow may we win that—our intended victory and right outcome.

Mantra 32

त्वयेदिन्द्र युजा वयं प्रति ब्रुवीमहि स्पृधः । त्वमस्माकं तव स्मसि ॥

With you alone as our yoked power, O Indra, we answer back to the rivalries; you are ours—and we are yours, bound in mutual belonging.

Mantra 33

त्वामिद्धि त्वायवोऽनुनोनुवतश्चरान् । सखाय इन्द्र कारवः ॥

For it is you indeed whom the seekers of your light continually urge on as you move; your companions, O Indra—the inspired doers—press you forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a Soma-linked hymn of praise meant to invoke Indra’s victorious power and generosity, asking him to give strength, protection, and success to the community.

Vṛtrahan means “slayer of Vṛtra,” the power of obstruction. The hymn celebrates Indra as the one who breaks what blocks light, waters, and victory—both in the world and within the worshipper.

Mada is Indra’s exhilarating rapture, especially from Soma. In the hymn it is treated as a divine energy that turns into ojas (strength) and enables the overcoming of obstacles.
