Soma Pavamāna (the purifying Soma)
Gāyatrī (3 pādas of ~8 syllables; typical for many Pavamāna verses)
This Pavamāna hymn celebrates Soma as he is pressed, released, and made to flow through the strainer (pavitra), becoming radiant and fit for the gods. The verses repeatedly link Soma’s purification with the gaining of saubhaga (good fortune), vāja (strength/abundance), and suvīrya (noble heroic power) for the singers and sacrificers.
Mantra 1
एते असृग्रमिन्दवस्तिरः पवित्रमाशवः । विश्वान्यभि सौभगा ॥
These swift drops of Indu (Soma) have been released; they pass through the purifier, moving towards all felicities—towards every form of good fortune of the being.
Mantra 2
विघ्नन्तो दुरिता पुरु सुगा तोकाय वाजिनः । तना कृण्वन्तो अर्वते ॥
Breaking the difficult passages and the wrong movements, these bringers of plenitude make many good paths for the child of the soul; they build the continuum of progress for the steed of the journeying force.
Mantra 3
कृण्वन्तो वरिवो गवेऽभ्यर्षन्ति सुष्टुतिम् । इळामस्मभ्यं संयतम् ॥
Creating wide room for the rays of illumination, they flow forth towards the well-made hymn; they bring to us the ordered abundance of iḷā—nourishment and right inspiration gathered into unity.
Mantra 4
असाव्यंशुर्मदायाप्सु दक्षो गिरिष्ठाः । श्येनो न योनिमासदत् ॥
The ray (aṃśu) has been pressed out for ecstasy; in the waters, the skilled power, mountain-born, comes to its home—like a falcon settling into its nest.
Mantra 5
शुभ्रमन्धो देववातमप्सु धूतो नृभिः सुतः । स्वदन्ति गावः पयोभिः ॥
The bright essence, breathed by the gods, pressed by men and cleansed in the waters—this Soma: the rays of illumination taste it with their streams of milk, finding in it the sweetness of nourished light.
Mantra 6
आदीमश्वं न हेतारोऽशूशुभन्नमृताय । मध्वो रसं सधमादे ॥
Then, like drivers urging a horse, they impelled him to the immortal; the honeyed essence, the rasa of sweetness, for the common delight of the gods within us.
Mantra 7
यास्ते धारा मधुश्चुतोऽसृग्रमिन्द ऊतये । ताभिः पवित्रमासदः ॥
Those streams of yours that drip sweetness—O Indu—have been released for our safeguarding; by them you take your seat upon the purifier, establishing the right flow of help.
Mantra 8
सो अर्षेन्द्राय पीतये तिरो रोमाण्यव्यया । सीदन्योना वनेष्वा ॥
Flow, then, for Indra to drink; pass through the hairs of the unfading (wool), and sit down in the wombs—the wooden vessels—so the power of luminous mind may receive you.
Mantra 9
त्वमिन्दो परि स्रव स्वादिष्ठो अङ्गिरोभ्यः । वरिवोविद्घृतं पयः ॥
O Indu, flow all around, most sweet, for the Angirases; find for us the wide space, the ghee and the milk—rich essences of luminous nourishment.
Mantra 10
अयं विचर्षणिर्हितः पवमानः स चेतति । हिन्वान आप्यं बृहत् ॥
This one, the wide-seeing, is set in place as Pavamāna; he awakens to consciousness, impelling the vast waters of the being—the great depth—towards right expansion.
Mantra 11
एष वृषा वृषव्रतः पवमानो अशस्तिहा । करद्वसूनि दाशुषे ॥
This is the Bull with the bull’s law: the self-purifying Soma, slayer of the hostile word. May he fashion for the giver the true riches—powers of fullness within the being.
Mantra 12
आ पवस्व सहस्रिणं रयिं गोमन्तमश्विनम् । पुरुश्चन्द्रं पुरुस्पृहम् ॥
Flow toward us, O self-purifying One, with a thousandfold plenitude: the rayi rich in luminous herds and swift energies—abundant in shining clarity, widely desired by the soul.
Mantra 13
एष स्य परि षिच्यते मर्मृज्यमान आयुभिः । उरुगायः कविक्रतुः ॥
This one is poured all around, being cleansed by the life-powers; wide in his chant of manifestation, with the seer’s will—Soma shapes the inner rite into spacious song and effective insight.
Mantra 14
सहस्रोतिः शतामघो विमानो रजसः कविः । इन्द्राय पवते मदः ॥
With thousandfold help and hundredfold bounty, the seer who measures out the mid-worlds purifies himself: the ecstasy of Soma flows for Indra—the force that empowers the victorious mind.
Mantra 15
गिरा जात इह स्तुत इन्दुरिन्द्राय धीयते । विर्योना वसताविव ॥
Born of the inspired word and praised here, the Soma-drop is set within for Indra; like a hero in his dwelling, he rests in his womb—securely established in the seat of the offering and the heart.
Mantra 16
पवमानः सुतो नृभिः सोमो वाजमिवासरत् । चमूषु शक्मनासदम् ॥
Self-purifying, pressed by the human powers, Soma has run forth like plenitude of strength; into the bowls he settles by his effective might—taking his seat within the prepared vessels of the nature.
Mantra 17
तं त्रिपृष्ठे त्रिवन्धुरे रथे युञ्जन्ति यातवे । ऋषीणां सप्त धीतिभिः ॥
Him they yoke for the journey on the three-backed, three-banded chariot—by the seven thought-powers of the seers. Thus Soma is made a vehicle of ascent through ordered planes of consciousness.
Mantra 18
तं सोतारो धनस्पृतमाशुं वाजाय यातवे । हरिं हिनोत वाजिनम् ॥
Him the pressers urge on—swift, winning the treasure—for the journey toward plenitude of force. Drive forward the tawny, the strong steed: Soma’s energy set in motion for victorious increase.
Mantra 19
आविशन्कलशं सुतो विश्वा अर्षन्नभि श्रियः । शूरो न गोषु तिष्ठति ॥
Entering the jar, pressed Soma has flowed toward all splendors; like a hero among the rays of light, he stands firm—established in the luminous herds of knowledge.
Mantra 20
आ त इन्दो मदाय कं पयो दुहन्त्यायवः । देवा देवेभ्यो मधु ॥
For your ecstasy, O Indu, the āyavaḥ milk out the sap: the gods for the gods—honeyed sweetness of delight. Thus the divine within draws from Soma the nectar that feeds divine growth in us.
Mantra 21
आ नः सोमं पवित्र आ सृजता मधुमत्तमम् । देवेभ्यो देवश्रुत्तमम् ॥
Release for us the Soma into the purifier; pour it forth most honey-rich, most divinely-heard, so that the gods within may receive and respond.
Mantra 22
एते सोमा असृक्षत गृणानाः श्रवसे महे । मदिन्तमस्य धारया ॥
These Soma-streams have been released; praised, they move toward the great glory, in the most intoxicating current of delight.
Mantra 23
अभि गव्यानि वीतये नृम्णा पुनानो अर्षसि । सनद्वाजः परि स्रव ॥
Toward the rays of Light for the right enjoyment you surge, purified, with manly force; winning the plenitude of power, flow all around us.
Mantra 24
उत नो गोमतीरिषो विश्वा अर्ष परिष्टुभः । गृणानो जमदग्निना ॥
And flow to us all the impulsions rich in light; encircle us with your encompassing praise, as you are affirmed by Jamadagni.
Mantra 25
पवस्व वाचो अग्रियः सोम चित्राभिरूतिभिः । अभि विश्वानि काव्या ॥
Purify yourself, O Soma, as the foremost of inspired speech; with your many-colored help-powers press upon and awaken all the poet-secrets within.
Mantra 26
त्वं समुद्रिया अपोऽग्रियो वाच ईरयन् । पवस्व विश्वमेजय ॥
You, foremost, stirring the oceanic waters, set the Word in motion; purify yourself and make the whole being tremble awake.
Mantra 27
तुभ्येमा भुवना कवे महिम्ने सोम तस्थिरे । तुभ्यमर्षन्ति सिन्धवः ॥
For you, O seer-Soma, these worlds stand established in your greatness; for you the rivers of force flow onward.
Mantra 28
प्र ते दिवो न वृष्टयो धारा यन्त्यसश्चतः । अभि शुक्रामुपस्तिरम् ॥
Forward your streams go, like the rains of heaven, unceasing—toward the bright foundation, the shining seat within.
Mantra 29
इन्द्रायेन्दुं पुनीतनोग्रं दक्षाय साधनम् । ईशानं वीतिराधसम् ॥
Purify the Soma-drop for Indra: fierce, a means for the power of discernment; a master who brings the right enjoyment and the plenitude of fulfillment.
Mantra 30
पवमान ऋतः कविः सोमः पवित्रमासदत् । दधत्स्तोत्रे सुवीर्यम् ॥
Self-purifying, the seer of the Truth—Soma—has taken his seat in the purifier, placing into our hymn a noble hero-strength.
Soma Pavamāna is Soma in the act of purification—flowing as bright drops through the strainer (pavitra) so the offering becomes fit for the gods and fruitful for the worshippers.
Because the hymn is closely tied to the Soma-pressing ritual: Soma is pressed, filtered through wool, and collected in bowls (camū) before being offered. The poetry follows these steps.
It asks for saubhaga (good fortune), vāja (strength and abundance), and suvīrya (noble heroic power), understood both as outer success and as inner clarity and inspired speech.
