Indra

This hymn is an extended Soma-invocation to Indra, praising him as the mighty Vajrin who comes to the pressed Soma and makes the worshiper’s kratu (will, resolve, inspired intelligence) clear and effective for the hymn. It repeatedly links Indra’s “many-colored helps” (citrā ūtayaḥ) with growth: strengthening the inner earth-like powers, enlarging capacity, and making praise itself increase in response.

Mantra 1

इन्द्रः सुतेषु सोमेषु क्रतुं पुनीत उक्थ्यम् । विदे वृधस्य दक्षसो महान्हि षः ॥

Indra, in the pressed Somes, purifies and clarifies the will-force that is fit for the hymn; for he knows—he is great—by the skill and power of the increaser.

Mantra 2

स प्रथमे व्योमनि देवानां सदने वृधः । सुपारः सुश्रवस्तमः समप्सुजित् ॥

He, the increaser, is in the first wideness, in the seat of the gods; a good-farer across, most rich in true hearing and fame, a conqueror even in the waters (the subconscient depths).

Mantra 3

तमह्वे वाजसातय इन्द्रं भराय शुष्मिणम् । भवा नः सुम्ने अन्तमः सखा वृधे ॥

Him I call—Indra, the mighty—for the winning of plenitude of force, for the bearing of our load: become for us the nearest friend in the happiness of thy grace, the increaser of our growth.

Mantra 4

इयं त इन्द्र गिर्वणो रातिः क्षरति सुन्वतः । मन्दानो अस्य बर्हिषो वि राजसि ॥

This thy giving, O Indra praised by song, flows out for the presser; delighted, upon his sacred seat of offering, thou shinest forth in full manifestation.

Mantra 5

नूनं तदिन्द्र दद्धि नो यत्त्वा सुन्वन्त ईमहे । रयिं नश्चित्रमा भरा स्वर्विदम् ॥

Now indeed grant us that, O Indra, for which we press and seek thee: bring to us a many-formed plenitude, a wealth that finds the Sun-world—light-winning and heaven-discovering.

Mantra 6

स्तोता यत्ते विचर्षणिरतिप्रशर्धयद्गिरः । वया इवानु रोहते जुषन्त यत् ॥

When the singer, O thou who beholdest men and their workings, makes the hymns surge beyond resistance—then they rise after thee like birds in flight, when thou acceptest and takest delight in them.

Mantra 7

प्रत्नवज्जनया गिरः शृणुधी जरितुर्हवम् । मदेमदे ववक्षिथा सुकृत्वने ॥

Bring forth again the ancient-inspired utterances; hear the call of the singer. In each wave of ecstasy you grow mightier, for the doer of the good and the right work.

Mantra 8

क्रीळन्त्यस्य सूनृता आपो न प्रवता यतीः । अया धिया य उच्यते पतिर्दिवः ॥

His true and luminous words sport and flow like waters rushing down the slope. By this awakened thought he is proclaimed the Lord of the heaven.

Mantra 9

उतो पतिर्य उच्यते कृष्टीनामेक इद्वशी । नमोवृधैरवस्युभिः सुते रण ॥

And he who is called the one sovereign Lord of the peoples—by those who increase through reverence and seek his help—rejoice here in the pressed delight.

Mantra 10

स्तुहि श्रुतं विपश्चितं हरी यस्य प्रसक्षिणा । गन्तारा दाशुषो गृहं नमस्विनः ॥

Praise the renowned, the wide-discerning; whose two tawny powers are strong to bear him forward. They come to the house of the giver, of the one rich in reverence.

Mantra 11

तूतुजानो महेमतेऽश्वेभिः प्रुषितप्सुभिः । आ याहि यज्ञमाशुभिः शमिद्धि ते ॥

O impetuous one, for the great measure, with horses that are heat-bright with dew-sparks—come swiftly to the yajña; surely it is for your peace and fulfilment.

Mantra 12

इन्द्र शविष्ठ सत्पते रयिं गृणत्सु धारय । श्रवः सूरिभ्यो अमृतं वसुत्वनम् ॥

Indra, most puissant, lord of the true, hold firm the plenitude in those who chant. Grant to the illumined seers the deathless fame and the very state of rich being.

Mantra 13

हवे त्वा सूर उदिते हवे मध्यंदिने दिवः । जुषाण इन्द्र सप्तिभिर्न आ गहि ॥

I call you at the sun’s uprising; I call you at heaven’s mid-day. Taking delight, O Indra, with your sevenfold powers, come to us.

Mantra 14

आ तू गहि प्र तु द्रव मत्स्वा सुतस्य गोमतः । तन्तुं तनुष्व पूर्व्यं यथा विदे ॥

Come here; run forth—take delight in the pressed soma rich in rays. Stretch out the ancient thread within us, so that we may truly know.

Mantra 15

यच्छक्रासि परावति यदर्वावति वृत्रहन् । यद्वा समुद्रे अन्धसोऽवितेदसि ॥

Whether you are far away or near at hand, O slayer of the Coverer; or whether you are in the ocean of delight—still you are indeed the helper.

Mantra 16

इन्द्रं वर्धन्तु नो गिर इन्द्रं सुतास इन्दवः । इन्द्रे हविष्मतीर्विशो अराणिषुः ॥

May our inspired words increase Indra; may the pressed soma-drops increase Indra. In Indra may the offer-laden peoples be set firm and harmonized.

Mantra 17

तमिद्विप्रा अवस्यवः प्रवत्वतीभिरूतिभिः । इन्द्रं क्षोणीरवर्धयन्वया इव ॥

That Indra indeed—the seers seeking a higher dwelling—by his forward-driving helps increased the wide earth-powers within, as wings grow for the flight.

Mantra 18

त्रिकद्रुकेषु चेतनं देवासो यज्ञमत्नत । तमिद्वर्धन्तु नो गिरः सदावृधम् ॥

In the three presses they laboured at the sacrifice to awaken the Conscious One; may our inspired words increase That—ever-growing—within us.

Mantra 19

स्तोता यत्ते अनुव्रत उक्थान्यृतुथा दधे । शुचिः पावक उच्यते सो अद्भुतः ॥

When the chanter, faithful to thy law, sets the hymns in the right seasons, he is called pure and cleansing; he becomes a marvel of the work.

Mantra 20

तदिद्रुद्रस्य चेतति यह्वं प्रत्नेषु धामसु । मनो यत्रा वि तद्दधुर्विचेतसः ॥

That indeed is awakened of Rudra—the impetuous power—in the ancient seats; where the discerning have set the mind wide to it.

Mantra 21

यदि मे सख्यमावर इमस्य पाह्यन्धसः । येन विश्वा अति द्विषो अतारिम ॥

If thou hast entered into comradeship with me, then guard this pressed delight; by it may I pass beyond all hatreds.

Mantra 22

कदा त इन्द्र गिर्वणः स्तोता भवाति शंतमः । कदा नो गव्ये अश्व्ये वसौ दधः ॥

When, O Indra who rejoicest in the chant, shall my praise become most peace-giving? When wilt thou place for us the riches of light and of forceful movement?

Mantra 23

उत ते सुष्टुता हरी वृषणा वहतो रथम् । अजुर्यस्य मदिन्तमं यमीमहे ॥

And thy two well-praised tawny powers, the strong ones, bear the chariot—of the unfailing Lord—most intoxicating in delight, whom we seek to draw near.

Mantra 24

तमीमहे पुरुष्टुतं यह्वं प्रत्नाभिरूतिभिः । नि बर्हिषि प्रिये सददध द्विता ॥

Him we seek—much-praised, the impetuous—by the ancient succours: may he sit down upon the beloved sacred seat, and again establish himself within.

Mantra 25

वर्धस्वा सु पुरुष्टुत ऋषिष्टुताभिरूतिभिः । धुक्षस्व पिप्युषीमिषमवा च नः ॥

Grow thou, O much-praised, by the succours hymned by the seers; and milk out for us the swelling nourishment, and guard us too.

Mantra 26

इन्द्र त्वमवितेदसीत्था स्तुवतो अद्रिवः । ऋतादियर्मि ते धियं मनोयुजम् ॥

Indra, thou art indeed the protector—so for one who praises, O wielder of the stone; from the Truth I set in motion for thee the thought yoked with mind.

Mantra 27

इह त्या सधमाद्या युजानः सोमपीतये । हरी इन्द्र प्रतद्वसू अभि स्वर ॥

Here, yoking those two comrades of the rapture, for the drinking of Soma—O Indra—let your two tawny powers press forward with their riches and sound forth the luminous cry within us.

Mantra 28

अभि स्वरन्तु ये तव रुद्रासः सक्षत श्रियम् । उतो मरुत्वतीर्विशो अभि प्रयः ॥

Let those Rudras who are yours resound toward the Light; may they win the splendor. And also let the peoples filled with the Maruts press toward the forward-moving offering-force.

Mantra 29

इमा अस्य प्रतूर्तयः पदं जुषन्त यद्दिवि । नाभा यज्ञस्य सं दधुर्यथा विदे ॥

These forward-driving powers delight in his step when it is in heaven; they set together the navel of the sacrifice, so that the knowing may be established.

Mantra 30

अयं दीर्घाय चक्षसे प्राचि प्रयत्यध्वरे । मिमीते यज्ञमानुषग्विचक्ष्य ॥

This one goes forward in the sacrifice toward a far-reaching vision; discerning, he measures out the yajña in its human continuity, step by step.

Mantra 31

वृषायमिन्द्र ते रथ उतो ते वृषणा हरी । वृषा त्वं शतक्रतो वृषा हवः ॥

Bull-like is your chariot, O Indra, and bull-like your two tawny energies; bull-like are you, O hundred-powered, and bull-like is the call that summons you—full of fruitful force.

वृषा ग्रावा वृषा मदो वृषा सोमो अयं सुतः । वृषा यज्ञो यमिन्वसि वृषा हवः ॥

Bull-like is the pressing-stone, bull-like the ecstasy; bull-like is this Soma, pressed out. Bull-like is the sacrifice you set in motion, and bull-like is the call—everything charged with fruitful force.

Mantra 33

वृषा त्वा वृषणं हुवे वज्रिञ्चित्राभिरूतिभिः । वावन्थ हि प्रतिष्टुतिं वृषा हवः ॥

Potent, I call you the Potent One, O wielder of the thunderbolt, with your many-colored helps; for you indeed increase the answering praise—potent is the call.
