Inner meaning

Rudra here is the fierce-clarifying force (yahvam) that breaks tamas and false formation. ‘Ancient seats’ (pratneṣu dhāmasu) are the deep-established planes in us—old foundations of being where the original powers reside. When the vicetasaḥ (those with awakened discernment) widen the mind (mano vi dadhur) to That, the Rudra-force is stirred: a purifying, penetrating energy that makes the consciousness keen and fearless.

Universal truth

Transformative power awakens when the mind is widened and made discerning; then even the fierce energies become allies of purification and truth.

Themes

Rudra as awakener, mind-expansion, inner discernment

Other hymns
Rig Veda 2.33 (Rudra hymn; thematic resonance), Rig Veda 1.114 (Rudra as healer/purifier), Rig Veda 8.13 (sequence)

Family tradition

Kāṇva context with occasional cross-illumination of deities; this verse integrates Rudra-force within an Indra-led movement of awakening.

Significance

Shows the Vedic integrality: illumination (Indra) requires purification and forceful truth-cutting (Rudra); the seer indicates where and how that force awakens—through widened mind and discernment.

Devata
Rudra
Epithets
Yahva (impetuous/mighty), Śiva (auspicious, implied as Rudra’s beneficent outcome), Bhava (becoming-force, later epithet; conceptually aligned)
Related deities
Indra (illumination), Maruts (storm-powers), Agni (purifying fire)

Cosmic role

Storm-force and healer; awakener of sharp truth-energy in the worlds; purifier of formations.

Inner power

Penetrating will that cuts through inner disease (confusion, fear, tamas) and restores right vibration.

Where it is used

Supplementary invocation within Indra/Soma contexts; Rudra invoked for protection/purification
