Inside Sukta 2

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is invoked as the chosen, most worthy flame—delightful and unerring—whose radiance is divine and whose presence makes the rite effective.

  2. Development

The hymn unfolds Agni’s origin and mode of manifestation: the gods generate him through kratu and dakṣa, and he appears in many luminous forms as the seer-will guiding right workings.

  3. Climax

Agni as Vaiśvānara is depicted as repeatedly born, roaring like a bull and lion, wide in power and immortal—then explicitly as the generous distributor of riches and treasures to the sacrificer.

  4. Where it settles

The praise resolves into a practical boon: may this radiant priest secure vāja and prosperity, rewarding the giver and stabilizing the sacrificial order.

The deity: Agni

  • Cosmic functionMediator between gods and humans: he carries offerings, awakens the sacrifice, kindles divine powers, and establishes right order in the ritual and in the world through light and heat.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened flame of aspiration and discernment—an inner priest that converts intention (kratu) and capacity (dakṣa) into luminous understanding (citti), enabling victory (vāja) and right action.

The seer

  • Viśvāmitra GāthinaGāthin (Kauśika lineage is commonly associated with Viśvāmitra in later tradition) · A royal-turned-seer celebrated for transforming kṣatriya power into brahmanical tapas and mantra, and for shaping major Rigvedic theology of Agni, Indra, and the divine order (ṛta).
