Mantra 1

प्र यद्वस्त्रिष्टुभमिषं मरुतो विप्रो अक्षरत् । वि पर्वतेषु राजथ ॥

When the seer pours forth for you, O Maruts, the Trishtubh nourishment of inspired force, you shine out and rule through the ranges—powers of the Vast moving in ordered might.

Mantra 2

यदङ्ग तविषीयवो यामं शुभ्रा अचिध्वम् । नि पर्वता अहासत ॥

When, O radiant ones, strong in your impelling force, you set your course, the mountains bowed down—fixed heights yielding before the advancing powers of the Truth’s movement.

Mantra 3

उदीरयन्त वायुभिर्वाश्रासः पृश्निमातरः । धुक्षन्त पिप्युषीमिषम् ॥

They raise it up with the winds—those roaring ones, sons of Prishni; they milk forth the abounding nourishment: the life-breaths become givers of plenary force for the soul’s advance.

Mantra 4

वपन्ति मरुतो मिहं प्र वेपयन्ति पर्वतान् । यद्यामं यान्ति वायुभिः ॥

The Maruts cast abroad the mist of the inner obscurity; they set the fixed formations trembling, when they go on their appointed march with the breaths (vāyus) of the life-force.

Mantra 5

नि यद्यामाय वो गिरिर्नि सिन्धवो विधर्मणे । महे शुष्माय येमिरे ॥

When, for your onward course, the mountain and the rivers set themselves in ordered placing—towards the wide law (of right arrangement)—then they yield themselves to your great force of impetus.

Mantra 6

युष्माँ उ नक्तमूतये युष्मान्दिवा हवामहे । युष्मान्प्रयत्यध्वरे ॥

You indeed we call in the night for protection; you we call in the day; you we call in the advancing movement of the sacrifice.

Mantra 7

उदु त्ये अरुणप्सवश्चित्रा यामेभिरीरते । वाश्रा अधि ष्णुना दिवः ॥

Up rise those radiant, many-colored powers, moving by their ordered courses; resounding, they take their station upon the ridge of heaven.

सृजन्ति रश्मिमोजसा पन्थां सूर्याय यातवे । ते भानुभिर्वि तस्थिरे ॥

By force they release the ray and make a path for the Sun to go; by their beams they stand out wide, establishing the luminous way.

इमां मे मरुतो गिरमिमं स्तोममृभुक्षणः । इमं मे वनता हवम् ॥

This my word, O Maruts—this my hymn, O strong shapers—accept it; accept this my call.

Mantra 10

त्रीणि सरांसि पृश्नयो दुदुह्रे वज्रिणे मधु । उत्सं कवन्धमुद्रिणम् ॥

The dappled ones have milked out three streams of sweetness for the wielder of the thunder-force; a spring, well-contained, rising upward—an inexhaustible source within.

मरुतो यद्ध वो दिवः सुम्नायन्तो हवामहे । आ तू न उप गन्तन ॥

O Maruts, when indeed we call you from heaven, seeking your grace, then come near to us—draw close into our being.

Mantra 12

यूयं हि ष्ठा सुदानवो रुद्रा ऋभुक्षणो दमे । उत प्रचेतसो मदे ॥

For you are indeed the good givers—Rudras, strong shapers—in the home; and you are the wide-aware powers in the ecstasy (of the inspired delight).

Mantra 13

आ नो रयिं मदच्युतं पुरुक्षुं विश्वधायसम् । इयर्ता मरुतो दिवः ॥

Bring to us the plenitude (rayi) that overflows with delight, rich in growth and wide in sustainment; set it in motion toward us, O Maruts from heaven.

Mantra 14

अधीव यद्गिरीणां यामं शुभ्रा अचिध्वम् । सुवानैर्मन्दध्व इन्दुभिः ॥

When, O luminous ones, you as it were set in motion the course and passage of the heights (the inner summits), then with the Soma-drops that are pressed out you enter into gladness and intensify the delight within.

Mantra 15

एतावतश्चिदेषां सुम्नं भिक्षेत मर्त्यः । अदाभ्यस्य मन्मभिः ॥

Even to this extent a mortal may ask for their grace—by the inspired thought-formations of the Unassailable: for the true boon is the protection and uplift that cannot be overcome.

Mantra 16

ये द्रप्सा इव रोदसी धमन्त्यनु वृष्टिभिः । उत्सं दुहन्तो अक्षितम् ॥

They who, like shining drops, breathe and widen the two worlds with their rainings, milking out the inexhaustible spring—these are the powers that make the being fertile with streams of delight and knowledge.

Mantra 17

उदु स्वानेभिरीरत उद्रथैरुदु वायुभिः । उत्स्तोमैः पृश्निमातरः ॥

Rise up with your resonant sounds; rise with your chariots; rise with your winds; rise with your hymns, O children of Pṛśni—lift the being upward by the many powers of movement and breath.

येनाव तुर्वशं यदुं येन कण्वं धनस्पृतम् । राये सु तस्य धीमहि ॥

He by whom Turvaśa and Yadu were helped, he by whom Kaṇva was made a winner of riches—toward that Power we set our thought for the plenitude of being (rāyí).

Mantra 19

इमा उ वः सुदानवो घृतं न पिप्युषीरिषः । वर्धान्काण्वस्य मन्मभिः ॥

These your nourishing streams, O good-givers, like clarified sweetness, have grown full—strengthened by the inspired formulations of the Kaṇva: may the inner offerings increase into rich sustenance.

क्व नूनं सुदानवो मदथा वृक्तबर्हिषः । ब्रह्मा को वः सपर्यति ॥

Where now, O good-givers, do you take your delight, you who have strewn the sacred seat? What priest of the soul, what knower of the word, is serving you with right approach?

Mantra 21

नहि ष्म यद्ध वः पुरा स्तोमेभिर्वृक्तबर्हिषः । शर्धाँ ऋतस्य जिन्वथ ॥

For never was it otherwise for you before, O strewers of the sacred seat: by hymns you quicken the host of Ṛta—by the word you feed the ordered powers into activity.

समु त्ये महतीरपः सं क्षोणी समु सूर्यम् । सं वज्रं पर्वशो दधुः ॥

Together they set the great Waters in harmony; together the Earth; together the Sun; together they placed the thunderbolt joint by joint—assembling the powers for a single act of Truth.

Mantra 23

वि वृत्रं पर्वशो ययुर्वि पर्वताँ अराजिनः । चक्राणा वृष्णि पौंस्यम् ॥

They went forth against Vṛtra, joint by joint; they shattered the unyielding mountains—fashioning, O strong One, the hero-force: thus the obstruction is broken and the hidden light is released.

अनु त्रितस्य युध्यतः शुष्ममावन्नुत क्रतुम् । अन्विन्द्रं वृत्रतूर्ये ॥

Following Trita as he strives in the battle, they brought forward the force and also the luminous will; they moved with Indra in the overcoming of the Vṛtra-obstruction.

Mantra 25

विद्युद्धस्ता अभिद्यवः शिप्राः शीर्षन्हिरण्ययीः । शुभ्रा व्यञ्जत श्रिये ॥

With lightning in their hands, shining heavenward, with radiant cheek-guards and golden head-ornaments, the bright ones anointed themselves outwardly for splendor.

उशना यत्परावत उक्ष्णो रन्ध्रमयातन । द्यौर्न चक्रदद्भिया ॥

When, desiring, from the farthest realm you opened a breach for the Bull, even Heaven trembled as if in fear.

Mantra 27

आ नो मखस्य दावनेऽश्वैर्हिरण्यपाणिभिः । देवास उप गन्तन ॥

Come to us for the giving of the delight of the offering, with your steeds, with hands of gold-light; O gods, draw near.

Mantra 28

यदेषां पृषती रथे प्रष्टिर्वहति रोहितः । यान्ति शुभ्रा रिणन्नपः ॥

When their dappled one is on the chariot and the red one draws the pole, the bright powers go, setting the waters vibrating into movement.

Mantra 29

सुषोमे शर्यणावत्यार्जीके पस्त्यावति । ययुर्निचक्रया नरः ॥

In the well-pressed Soma, in Śaryaṇāvatī, in Ārjīka rich in dwelling, the heroes went with the wheel set down—steadfast in their course.

Mantra 30

कदा गच्छाथ मरुत इत्था विप्रं हवमानम् । मार्डीकेभिर्नाधमानम् ॥

When will you come, O Maruts, thus to the seer who calls—who is in need—bringing your powers of gracious healing?

Mantra 31

कद्ध नूनं कधप्रियो यदिन्द्रमजहातन । को वः सखित्व ओहते ॥

What then now, O lovers of the ‘kádha’, is it that you have not abandoned Indra? Who among you withdraws from the bond of comradeship?

Mantra 32

सहो षु णो वज्रहस्तैः कण्वासो अग्निं मरुद्भिः । स्तुषे हिरण्यवाशीभिः ॥

With the strong ones, the thunderbolt-handed, we the Kāṇvas praise Agni together with the Maruts, with voices bright as gold.

Mantra 33

ओ षु वृष्णः प्रयज्यूना नव्यसे सुविताय । ववृत्यां चित्रवाजान् ॥

O, for the Bull, the forward-sacrificing powers, for a newer becoming, for a happy going—may I turn them here, those of variegated plenitudes of force.

Mantra 34

गिरयश्चिन्नि जिहते पर्शानासो मन्यमानाः । पर्वताश्चिन्नि येमिरे ॥

Even the inner ‘hills’ yield and are made to sink down; the resisting masses, imagining themselves firm, give way. Even the ‘mountains’ are constrained and held back—when the divine Force presses upon the obstruction.

आक्ष्णयावानो वहन्त्यन्तरिक्षेण पततः । धातारः स्तुवते वयः ॥

They bear us on—swift in their seeing—flying through the mid-world; the divine Disposers convey to the one who praises the winged powers of progress.

Mantra 36

अग्निर्हि जानि पूर्व्यश्छन्दो न सूरो अर्चिषा । ते भानुभिर्वि तस्थिरे ॥

Agni indeed is the ancient knower-born, like a sun of the mantra with his flame; by his rays these powers stand out and take their stations, spread in the wideness.
