
Sukta 9.64

Mantra 1
वृषा सोम द्युमाँ असि वृषा देव वृषव्रतः । वृषा धर्माणि दधिषे ॥
O Soma, a Bull of luminous power thou art; a Bull, O god, with the steadfast will of the Bull. As a Bull thou upholdest and establishest the laws of the Truth in us.
Mantra 2
वृष्णस्ते वृष्ण्यं शवो वृषा वनं वृषा मदः । सत्यं वृषन्वृषेदसि ॥
Thy strength is the strength of the Bull; thy force is a bull’s victorious delight, thy ecstasy a bull’s outpouring. O Bull, thou art indeed the Truth in its puissant affirmation.
Mantra 3
अश्वो न चक्रदो वृषा सं गा इन्दो समर्वतः । वि नो राये दुरो वृधि ॥
Like a steed that neighs in power, O Bull Indu, gather together the rays (cows of light) and the energies that bear us onward. Open wide for us the doors of plenitude of being.
Mantra 4
असृक्षत प्र वाजिनो गव्या सोमासो अश्वया । शुक्रासो वीरयाशवः ॥
Forth they have flowed, the puissant Soma-streams, rich in the plenitudes (vāja) of the luminous herds and the swift powers of progress; shining, impetuous, bearing the heroic force within.
Mantra 5
शुम्भमाना ऋतायुभिर्मृज्यमाना गभस्त्योः । पवन्ते वारे अव्यये ॥
Adorning themselves with the seekers of the Ṛta, cleansed in the hands’ grasp, they purify and flow in the imperishable current—Soma-streams becoming fit vessels of the Truth.
Mantra 6
ते विश्वा दाशुषे वसु सोमा दिव्यानि पार्थिवा । पवन्तामान्तरिक्ष्या ॥
May the Soma streams, purifying, bring to the giver all treasures—those of the luminous worlds and those of the earthly foundation—arriving from the mid-region as powers that mediate heaven and earth within us.
Mantra 7
पवमानस्य विश्ववित्प्र ते सर्गा असृक्षत । सूर्यस्येव न रश्मयः ॥
O all-finding Pavamāna, thy streams are released forth—like the rays of the Sun—carrying everywhere the discovery of light and the unveiling of the hidden.
Mantra 8
केतुं कृण्वन्दिवस्परि विश्वा रूपाभ्यर्षसि । समुद्रः सोम पिन्वसे ॥
Creating a banner of light from beyond the heaven, thou flowest over all forms. O Soma, thou swellest into a vastness like the ocean—an immeasurable wideness of delight and being.
Mantra 10
इन्दुः पविष्ट चेतनः प्रियः कवीनां मती । सृजदश्वं रथीरिव ॥
Indu, most purified, becomes the awakened consciousness, beloved of the seers’ thought; he releases the steed of power as a charioteer sets free his horse—sending the life-force forward for the journey.
Mantra 11
ऊर्मिर्यस्ते पवित्र आ देवावीः पर्यक्षरत् । सीदन्नृतस्य योनिमा ॥
The wave of thee that has flowed around the filter, moving godward, settles down into the womb of Ṛta—establishing the purified delight in the native seat of Truth within.
Mantra 12
स नो अर्ष पवित्र आ मदो यो देववीतमः । इन्दविन्द्राय पीतये ॥
O Soma, flow for us into the purifier—this ecstasy that is most dear to the gods—so that it may be drunk by Indra, the Power of luminous mastery within us.
Mantra 13
इषे पवस्व धारया मृज्यमानो मनीषिभिः । इन्दो रुचाभि गा इहि ॥
Flow for our increase in plenitude, O Soma, in a steady stream, being cleansed by the thinkers; with thy lights go toward the rays of illumination (the ‘cows’) and enter them.
Mantra 14
पुनानो वरिवस्कृध्यूर्जं जनाय गिर्वणः । हरे सृजान आशिरम् ॥
Purifying thyself, create for us wide room and bring the soul’s strength for the people, O lord of the chant; pouring forth, O tawny one, the draught of the inner felicity.
Mantra 15
पुनानो देववीतय इन्द्रस्य याहि निष्कृतम् । द्युतानो वाजिभिर्यतः ॥
Purifying thyself for the gods’ glad acceptance, go to Indra’s appointed place of offering; shining forth, arrive with the plenitudes of force.
Mantra 16
प्र हिन्वानास इन्दवोऽच्छा समुद्रमाशवः । धिया जूता असृक्षत ॥
Driven forward, the swift Soma-drops have rushed toward the ocean; urged on by the thought, they have been released into their vastness.
Mantra 17
मर्मृजानास आयवो वृथा समुद्रमिन्दवः । अग्मन्नृतस्य योनिमा ॥
The Soma-drops, again and again being cleansed, have not gone in vain to the ocean; they have come to the womb of Ṛta, the birthplace of the true order.
Mantra 18
परि णो याह्यस्मयुर्विश्वा वसून्योजसा । पाहि नः शर्म वीरवत् ॥
Move around us with thy seeking care; bring by thy power all the riches (of being). Guard for us a shelter that is full of heroic force.
Mantra 19
मिमाति वह्निरेतशः पदं युजान ऋक्वभिः । प्र यत्समुद्र आहितः ॥
The swift carrier measures out the path, yoking himself with the seers’ hymns, when he is set forth into the ocean-vast.
Mantra 20
आ यद्योनिं हिरण्ययमाशुॠतस्य सीदति । जहात्यप्रचेतसः ॥
When the swift one sits in the golden womb of Ṛta, he casts away the unawakened states of consciousness.
Mantra 21
अभि वेना अनूषतेयक्षन्ति प्रचेतसः । मज्जन्त्यविचेतसः ॥
Toward it the seekers yearn and cry; the awakened strive to reach it, but the unawakened sink down into obscurity.
Mantra 22
इन्द्रायेन्दो मरुत्वते पवस्व मधुमत्तमः । ऋतस्य योनिमासदम् ॥
O Indu (Soma), flow in thy most honeyed fullness for Indra in his Marut-strength; take thy seat in the womb of Ṛta, the home of the Truth-Order.
Mantra 23
तं त्वा विप्रा वचोविदः परि ष्कृण्वन्ति वेधसः । सं त्वा मृजन्त्यायवः ॥
The inspired seers, knowers of the Word, fashion thee all around; the wise builders cleanse thee wholly—O Soma—so that thy light may be made fit for the inner offering.
Mantra 24
रसं ते मित्रो अर्यमा पिबन्ति वरुणः कवे । पवमानस्य मरुतः ॥
Thy essence of taste and power, O Sage, Mitra and Aryaman drink, and Varuṇa; the Maruts too partake of the purified Soma—powers that uphold harmony, noble striving, and vast law in us.
Mantra 25
त्वं सोम विपश्चितं पुनानो वाचमिष्यसि । इन्दो सहस्रभर्णसम् ॥
Thou, O Soma, in thy purification, impellest the Word that is full of discerning light; O Indu, bring forward the speech that bears a thousand strengths—mantra that carries plenitude of force.
Mantra 26
उतो सहस्रभर्णसं वाचं सोम मखस्युवम् । पुनान इन्दवा भर ॥
And bring too, O Soma, the Word that bears a thousand strengths, the speech that is eager for the sacrifice; in thy purification, O Indu, carry it into us.
Mantra 27
पुनान इन्दवेषां पुरुहूत जनानाम् । प्रियः समुद्रमा विश ॥
Purifying thyself, O Indu—beloved of these peoples who call on thee many times—enter the oceanic fullness: plunge into the great sea of consciousness where all streams of delight unite.
Mantra 28
दविद्युतत्या रुचा परिष्टोभन्त्या कृपा । सोमाः शुक्रा गवाशिरः ॥
With a flashing radiance, with the hymn that rings around, with the shaping form—Soma-powers, bright and pure, are mixed with the cow’s essence: they take into themselves the rays of luminous knowledge.
Mantra 29
हिन्वानो हेतृभिर्यत आ वाजं वाज्यक्रमीत् । सीदन्तो वनुषो यथा ॥
Urged on by the impellers, he advances and steps toward the Vāja—plenitude of force and victory; settling down like seekers at their aim, the Soma-currents take their seat in the right place within.
Mantra 30
ऋधक्सोम स्वस्तये संजग्मानो दिवः कविः । पवस्व सूर्यो दृशे ॥
O Soma, for our well-being, coming together as the seer from heaven, flow purified—become a Sun for the vision, a light that makes the inner sight true.
