Sukta 61

Mantra 1

अया वीती परि स्रव यस्त इन्दो मदेष्वा । अवाहन्नवतीर्नव ॥

By this path of our approach, flow all around us, O Indu (Soma), you who in the ecstasies bring down (into us) the nine-and-ninety currents of the descending powers.

Mantra 2

पुरः सद्य इत्थाधिये दिवोदासाय शम्बरम् । अध त्यं तुर्वशं यदुम् ॥

At once he breaks open the obstructing strongholds for the right-minded Divodāsa—Shambara; and then he sets free that Turvaśa and Yadu (the powers held back), releasing the imprisoned movements of the being.

Mantra 3

परि णो अश्वमश्वविद्गोमदिन्दो हिरण्यवत् । क्षरा सहस्रिणीरिषः ॥

Flow around us, O Indu, bringing the force that wins the steed (swift energy), rich in luminous rays (cows) and golden light; pour out the thousandfold impulsions of increase.

Mantra 4

पवमानस्य ते वयं पवित्रमभ्युन्दतः । सखित्वमा वृणीमहे ॥

Of you, the self-purifying One, as you pour yourself upon the filter, we choose for ourselves the state of friendship—an intimate alliance with your clarifying delight.

Mantra 5

ये ते पवित्रमूर्मयोऽभिक्षरन्ति धारया । तेभिर्नः सोम मृळय ॥

Those waves of yours that stream through the filter in a steady current—by them, O Soma, bring us peace and glad release; heal the being with your purifying flow.

Mantra 6

स नः पुनान आ भर रयिं वीरवतीमिषम् । ईशानः सोम विश्वतः ॥

Purifying yourself, bring to us the plenitude (rayi) and the increase rich in heroic power; O Soma, master from every side, govern and fill our whole being.

Mantra 7

एतमु त्यं दश क्षिपो मृजन्ति सिन्धुमातरम् । समादित्येभिरख्यत ॥

This very one the ten swift hands cleanse—him whose mother is the River; he becomes manifest in harmony with the Ādityas, the powers of vast order and truth.

Mantra 8

समिन्द्रेणोत वायुना सुत एति पवित्र आ । सं सूर्यस्य रश्मिभिः ॥

Pressed out, he goes to the filter in union with Indra and with Vāyu; and he unites with the rays of Sūrya—so delight becomes force, breath, and illumination together.

Mantra 9

स नो भगाय वायवे पूष्णे पवस्व मधुमान् । चारुर्मित्रे वरुणे च ॥

Flow for us, honey-rich, for Bhaga, for Vāyu, for Pūṣan—beautiful also for Mitra and Varuṇa: become in us the sweetness that supports right enjoyment, right breath, right guidance, and the law of harmony.

Mantra 10

उच्चा ते जातमन्धसो दिवि षद्भूम्या ददे । उग्रं शर्म महि श्रवः ॥

High is what is born of your essence: it sits in heaven, and earth receives it—your strong peace and your vast fame; may that uplifted power establish us in a great protection.

Mantra 11

एना विश्वान्यर्य आ द्युम्नानि मानुषाणाम् । सिषासन्तो वनामहे ॥

By this (purifying flow of Soma) the noble power draws near all the luminous energies of the human being; aspiring and seeking to win, we attain them.

Mantra 12

स न इन्द्राय यज्यवे वरुणाय मरुद्भ्यः । वरिवोवित्परि स्रव ॥

Flow around us, O Soma, as the knower of wide spaces—so that the power of Indra, the law of Varuṇa, and the impulsions of the Maruts may be made worship-worthy within us.

Mantra 13

उपो षु जातमप्तुरं गोभिर्भङ्गं परिष्कृतम् । इन्दुं देवा अयासिषुः ॥

Close indeed to the birth, the swift-working (Soma), purified and fashioned by the rays of Light, the gods have brought forward the shining drop for our journey of the sacrifice.

Mantra 14

तमिद्वर्धन्तु नो गिरो वत्सं संशिश्वरीरिव । य इन्द्रस्य हृदंसनिः ॥

Let our utterances increase him, as mothers increase the calf—him who is the winner of Indra’s heart (the inmost consent of illumined Force).

Mantra 15

अर्षा णः सोम शं गवे धुक्षस्व पिप्युषीमिषम् । वर्धा समुद्रमुक्थ्यम् ॥

Flow for us, O Soma, bringing peace to the Light within; pour out the abundant nourishment of impulse, and increase the ocean of the inspired word.

Mantra 16

पवमानो अजीजनद्दिवश्चित्रं न तन्यतुम् । ज्योतिर्वैश्वानरं बृहत् ॥

As he purifies, he has brought to birth from heaven a wondrous lightning— the vast Vaiśvānara Light (the universal fire of consciousness).

Mantra 17

पवमानस्य ते रसो मदो राजन्नदुच्छुनः । वि वारमव्यमर्षति ॥

O King, the taste and ecstasy of your purifying Soma—unfailing—flows out, breaking open the woolen strainer and passing through it wide.

Mantra 18

पवमान रसस्तव दक्षो वि राजति द्युमान् । ज्योतिर्विश्वं स्वर्दृशे ॥

O Purifying One, your essence—your discerning power—shines out in a luminous mastery; it becomes the universal Light for the vision of the Sun-world.

Mantra 19

यस्ते मदो वरेण्यस्तेना पवस्वान्धसा । देवावीरघशंसहा ॥

With that ecstasy of yours which is most choice, purify yourself with the pressing; O helper of the gods, slayer of hostile falsehood.

Mantra 20

जघ्निर्वृत्रममित्रियं सस्निर्वाजं दिवेदिवे । गोषा उ अश्वसा असि ॥

You are the slayer of the obstructer and the hostile force; you win the plenitude of power day by day. You are a giver of rays (cows) and a giver of swift energies (horses).

Mantra 21

सम्मिश्लो अरुषो भव सूपस्थाभिर्न धेनुभिः । सीदञ्छ्येनो न योनिमा ॥

Become perfectly blended and luminous, O Soma, as if with well-seated nurturing powers, like cows around the stall; settle into your own birthplace as the swift-flying falcon settles into its nest—enter the founded seat of the Truth within us.

Mantra 22

स पवस्व य आविथेन्द्रं वृत्राय हन्तवे । वव्रिवांसं महीरपः ॥

Purify yourself, O Soma—thou who hast helped Indra to strike down Vṛtra—covering him with the vast waters; become in us the force that releases the great streams of consciousness from the knot of obstruction.

Mantra 23

सुवीरासो वयं धना जयेम सोम मीढ्वः । पुनानो वर्ध नो गिरः ॥

May we, rich in true heroic energies, win the plenitudes, O Soma the bountiful; as thou art purifying thyself, increase our mantras—make our word a growing power of truth.

Mantra 24

त्वोतासस्तवावसा स्याम वन्वन्त आमुरः । सोम व्रतेषु जागृहि ॥

Supported by thee and by thy helping force, may we become seekers who win; O Soma, be awake in the disciplines—keep watch in our vows and right workings so the inner rite is not lost.

Mantra 25

अपघ्नन्पवते मृधोऽप सोमो अराव्णः । गच्छन्निन्द्रस्य निष्कृतम् ॥

Soma flows, striking away the hostile pressures; the faultless one drives them off, moving toward Indra’s open space of release—toward the prepared field where the luminous mind can act freely.

Mantra 26

महो नो राय आ भर पवमान जही मृधः । रास्वेन्दो वीरवद्यशः ॥

Bring to us a great fullness of being, O self-purifying one; strike down the hostile pressures. Give, O Indu, glory that is rich in heroic force—fame of the soul that carries power to act.

Mantra 27

न त्वा शतं चन ह्रुतो राधो दित्सन्तमा मिनन् । यत्पुनानो मखस्यसे ॥

Not even a hundred deceivers can diminish thee when thou art offering to give the bounty; for when thou purifiest thyself, thou becomest the master of the sacrifice—unalterable in thy will to bestow.

Mantra 28

पवस्वेन्दो वृषा सुतः कृधी नो यशसो जने । विश्वा अप द्विषो जहि ॥

Purify thyself, O Indu, a strong bull pressed out; make us a people of glory. Smite away all who hate—drive out every force of inner denial that opposes the growth of truth.

Mantra 29

अस्य ते सख्ये वयं तवेन्दो द्युम्न उत्तमे । सासह्याम पृतन्यतः ॥

In this thy friendship, O Indu, in thy highest luminous might, may we prevail over those who wage battle—held by the allyship of the shining Soma, we overcome the powers of division.

Mantra 30

या ते भीमान्यायुधा तिग्मानि सन्ति धूर्वणे । रक्षा समस्य नो निदः ॥

Those fearful weapons of thine, those sharp powers for crushing—guard us with them from the slanderer. Protect us wholly from the voice of denial that seeks to wound the truth in us.
