This Pavamāna Soma hymn celebrates the living current of Soma as he is pressed, filtered, and made radiant—praised as a kingly power that moves between worlds and establishes inspired clarity in the human mind. The verses repeatedly portray Soma’s “kin” (the pressing stones, waters, and streams of purification) urging him forward, so that his purified flow grants rayi (plenitude), protection, and uplift to the sacrificer and the community.
Mantra 1
हिन्वन्ति सूरमुस्रयः स्वसारो जामयस्पतिम् । महामिन्दुं महीयुवः ॥
They urge on the strong one—the bright ones, his sisters and kin—driving their lord; they magnify the great Indu, that vast delight, so it may rule and uplift the whole being.
Mantra 2
पवमान रुचारुचा देवो देवेभ्यस्परि । विश्वा वसून्या विश ॥
O Soma in thy self-purifying flow, shining with a many-sided radiance, a god moving among the gods—enter into us bearing all the riches: the full powers of being and light.
Mantra 3
आ पवमान सुष्टुतिं वृष्टिं देवेभ्यो दुवः । इषे पवस्व संयतम् ॥
Come, O self-purifying Soma, bringing the well-shaped hymn and the rain of fulfilment for the gods; purify thyself for our impulse of growth, gathered and rightly directed.
Mantra 4
वृषा ह्यसि भानुना द्युमन्तं त्वा हवामहे । पवमान स्वाध्यः ॥
For thou art the Bull by thy beam of light; thee, the radiant one, we call—O self-purifying Soma, strong in thy own right inner power of realization.
Mantra 5
आ पवस्व सुवीर्यं मन्दमानः स्वायुध । इहो ष्विन्दवा गहि ॥
Purify thyself towards us bringing the perfect hero-force; rejoicing in thy movement, armed with thy own power—come here indeed, O Indu, into this field of our becoming.
Mantra 6
यदद्भिः परिषिच्यसे मृज्यमानो गभस्त्योः । द्रुणा सधस्थमश्नुषे ॥
When thou art sprinkled round with the waters and cleansed in the two hands, then thou attainest the firm seat: the settled foundation where the delight can abide.
Mantra 7
प्र सोमाय व्यश्ववत्पवमानाय गायत । महे सहस्रचक्षसे ॥
Sing forth to Soma, the self-purifying, with a hymn that has the speed of many horses; to the Great One of a thousand eyes—wide-seeing in the inner worlds.
Mantra 8
यस्य वर्णं मधुश्चुतं हरिं हिन्वन्त्यद्रिभिः । इन्दुमिन्द्राय पीतये ॥
He whose hue is honey-pouring, the tawny-golden, whom they impel with the pressing-stones—this Indu they set forward for Indra to drink: delight offered to the lord of luminous mind-force.
Mantra 9
तस्य ते वाजिनो वयं विश्वा धनानि जिग्युषः । सखित्वमा वृणीमहे ॥
Of thee—O winner of plenitude—we, who seek to conquer all the riches, choose friendship: a loyal comradeship with the Soma-force that leads to fullness.
Mantra 10
वृषा पवस्व धारया मरुत्वते च मत्सरः । विश्वा दधान ओजसा ॥
O Bull, purify thyself in a streaming current, joyous for the Marut-force; bearing all things by thy might—establishing the powers in us with strength.
Mantra 11
तं त्वा धर्तारमोण्योः पवमान स्वर्दृशम् । हिन्वे वाजेषु वाजिनम् ॥
Thee we impel—O self-purifying Soma—as the upholder within the two vessels, the seer of the luminous worlds; we set thee in motion in the battles for plenitude, O winner of vāja.
Mantra 13
आ न इन्दो महीमिषं पवस्व विश्वदर्शतः । अस्मभ्यं सोम गातुवित् ॥
Flow towards us, O Indu, bringing the vast nourishment; O all-beautifully manifest Soma, become for us the knower and finder of the right paths of movement (the inner ways).
Mantra 14
आ कलशा अनूषतेन्दो धाराभिरोजसा । एन्द्रस्य पीतये विश ॥
The cups call you hither, O Indu, with streams of force; enter for Indra’s drinking—so that the Power in us may be filled with the clarified delight.
Mantra 15
यस्य ते मद्यं रसं तीव्रं दुहन्त्यद्रिभिः । स पवस्वाभिमातिहा ॥
You whose intoxicating essence, sharp and intense, is milked out by the pressing-stones—purify yourself as that slayer of hostile forces in us.
Mantra 16
राजा मेधाभिरीयते पवमानो मनावधि । अन्तरिक्षेण यातवे ॥
The king, the self-purifying Soma, advances with inspired discernments; he takes his seat upon the mind and travels through the mid-world—moving between earth-bound nature and the luminous heights.
Mantra 17
आ न इन्दो शतग्विनं गवां पोषं स्वश्व्यम् । वहा भगत्तिमूतये ॥
Come to us, O Indu, bringing the hundredfold increase—nourishment of the rays (cows) and a rich strength of swift energies; carry to us for our help the portioned felicity (bhaga).
Mantra 18
आ नः सोम सहो जुवो रूपं न वर्चसे भर । सुष्वाणो देववीतये ॥
Bring to us, O Soma, the power and the swift impetus, a form as if for radiance; resounding, move for the winning and enjoyment of the gods within us.
Mantra 19
अर्षा सोम द्युमत्तमोऽभि द्रोणानि रोरुवत् । सीदञ्छ्येनो न योनिमा ॥
Flow, O Soma, most luminous, crying out over the troughs; settle into your home like a falcon to its nest—entering the secure seat of the soul’s receptacle.
Mantra 20
अप्सा इन्द्राय वायवे वरुणाय मरुद्भ्यः । सोमो अर्षति विष्णवे ॥
In the waters Soma flows for Indra, for Vayu, for Varuna, for the Maruts, and for Vishnu—so that every divine power in us may be fed by the clarified delight in its own mode.
Mantra 21
इषं तोकाय नो दधदस्मभ्यं सोम विश्वतः । आ पवस्व सहस्रिणम् ॥
Placing the nourishing force for our offspring—yes, for us from every side—purify yourself towards us, O Soma, bringing the thousandfold plenitude.
Mantra 22
ये सोमासः परावति ये अर्वावति सुन्विरे । ये वादः शर्यणावति ॥
Those Somas that are pressed in the far region, those that are pressed in the nearer region, and those there in Śaryaṇāvat—may all these currents converge as one offering, linking distant and near spaces of our consciousness.
Mantra 23
य आर्जीकेषु कृत्वसु ये मध्ये पस्त्यानाम् । ये वा जनेषु पञ्चसु ॥
Those (Soma-powers) who are active in the radiant fields of right-impulse, those who stand in the midst of the dwelling-planes of our being, those also who move among the fivefold peoples (the five orders of our nature)—may they become present to us as the inner helpers.
Mantra 24
ते नो वृष्टिं दिवस्परि पवन्तामा सुवीर्यम् । सुवाना देवास इन्दवः ॥
May those drops, divine in their pressing, purify for us the rain from beyond the heaven—may they bring in the coming of true hero-force, the victorious energy of the soul.
Mantra 25
पवते हर्यतो हरिर्गृणानो जमदग्निना । हिन्वानो गोरधि त्वचि ॥
He purifies—golden-impelled, the radiant one—praised by the fire-will that awakens in the seeker; he is driven onward upon the cow’s skin, upon the hide (the covering), to release the concealed light.
Mantra 26
प्र शुक्रासो वयोजुवो हिन्वानासो न सप्तयः । श्रीणाना अप्सु मृञ्जत ॥
Forward move the bright ones, swift with the life-force, urged on like seven steeds; blending with the waters, they cleanse and make ready the currents of our being.
Mantra 27
तं त्वा सुतेष्वाभुवो हिन्विरे देवतातये । स पवस्वानया रुचा ॥
You—this Soma—within the pressed offerings the mighty ones impel for the becoming of the divine in us; so purify yourself by this light, by this shining guidance.
Mantra 28
आ ते दक्षं मयोभुवं वह्निमद्या वृणीमहे । पान्तमा पुरुस्पृहम् ॥
Today we choose for ourselves your power of right-discrimination that brings delight, your flaming carrier-force; guarded, much-desired—come to us.
Mantra 29
आ मन्द्रमा वरेण्यमा विप्रमा मनीषिणम् । पान्तमा पुरुस्पृहम् ॥
Bring to us the rapturous one, the choicest one; bring to us the inspired seer, the wise-thinker—guarded and much-desired, come to us.
Mantra 30
आ रयिमा सुचेतुनमा सुक्रतो तनूष्वा । पान्तमा पुरुस्पृहम् ॥
Bring to us the plenitude (rayi), bring the clear-awakened consciousness; O strong in right-will, bring it into our bodies—guarded and much-desired, come to us.
Soma Pavamāna—the Soma juice as it is pressed and purified, praised as a radiant, kingly power that strengthens gods and people.
In the ritual, Soma is strained through a filter to become fit for offering; the hymn also uses this as a symbol of inner cleansing—turning raw energy into clear awareness and discernment.
It asks for rayi (plenitude/abundance), sucetunā (clear-awakened consciousness), protection, and an uplifted, well-ordered life-force established in the body and mind.
