Mantra 1
पितृमेधः। ६४ भुरिक् पथ्यापङ्क्तिः, ६७ पथ्याबृहती, ६९, ७१ उपरिष्टाद् बृहती। इयं नारी पतिलोकं वृणाना नि पद्यत उप त्वा मर्त्य प्रेतम्। धर्मं पुराणमनुपालयन्ती तस्यै प्रजां द्रविणं चेह धेहि
This woman, choosing the husband’s sphere, let her step down near thee, O mortal, departed. Observing the ancient Law, do thou bestow on her offspring and wealth, even here.
Mantra 2
उदीर्ष्व नार्यभि जीवलोकं गतासुमेतमुप शेष एहि । हस्तग्राभस्य दधिषोस्तवेदं पत्युर्जनित्वमभि सं बभूथ
Rise up, O woman, unto the world of the living: come away from this man whose life is gone, beside whom thou liest. This thy wifehood hath been fulfilled in relation to the husband who seized thy hand, who established thee.
Mantra 3
अपश्यं युवतिं नीयमानां जीवां मृतेभ्यः परिणीयमानाम्। अन्धेन यत् तमसा प्रावृतासीत् प्राक्तो अपाचीमनयं तदेनाम्
I beheld a young woman, living, being led away from the dead, being escorted forth. When she had been covered with blind darkness, then did I lead her forward from the backward way.
Mantra 4
प्रजानत्यऽघ्न्ये जीवलोकं देवानां पन्थामनुसंचरन्ती । अयं ते गोपतिस्तं जुषस्व स्वर्गं लोकमधि रोहयैनम्
Knowing, O Cow whom none may slay, the world of living men, thou goest along the Gods’ own pathway in due course. This lord of cattle is for thee: accept him graciously; make him ascend unto the heavenly world above.
Mantra 5
उप द्यामुप वेतसमवत्तरो नदीनाम्। अग्ने पित्तमपामसि
Up to the sky, up to the reed; go thou down to the rivers. O Agni, thou art the bile (the potent essence) of the waters.
Mantra 6
यं त्वमग्ने समदहस्तमु निर्वापया पुनः । क्याम्बूरत्र रोहतु शाण्डदूर्वा व्यऽल्कशा
Whom thou, O Agni, hast burned up utterly, him do thou cool and lay forth again. Let kyāmbū grow here; let the śāṇḍa-dūrvā spring up, spreading wide.
Mantra 7
इदं त एकं पर ऊ त एकं तृतीयेन ज्योतिषा सं विशस्व । संवेशने तन्वा३ चारुरेधि प्रियो देवानां परमे सधस्थे
This is one portion for thee, and yonder is one for thee: with a third light enter thou in full. In the entering-in, be fair in thine own person; be dear to the Gods in the highest seat of their assembly.
Mantra 8
उत् तिष्ठ प्रेहि प्र द्रवौकः कृणुष्व सलिले सधस्थे । तत्र त्वं पितृभिः संविदानः सं सोमेन मदस्व सं स्वधाभिः
Rise up; go forth: make thee a flowing home, a station in the waters. There, in accord with the Fathers, rejoice together with Soma, rejoice together with the svadhā-powers and offerings.
Mantra 9
प्र च्यवस्व तन्वं१ सं भरस्व मा ते गात्रा वि हायि मो शरीरम्। मनो निविष्टमनुसंविशस्व यत्र भूमेर्जुषसे तत्र गच्छ
Depart thou forth; gather up thy person entire: let not thy limbs be left asunder, nor thy body at all. Let thy mind, duly set, enter in full succession; where thou findest thy pleasure in Earth, thither go.
Mantra 10
वर्चसा मां पितरः सोम्यासो अञ्जन्तु देवा मधुना घृतेन । चक्षुषे मा प्रतरं तारयन्तो जरसे मा जरदष्टिं वर्धन्तु
With lustre let the Soma-blest Fathers anoint me; let the Gods anoint with honey and with ghee. Ferrying me safely over to clearer seeing, let them increase for me old age, yea, the firm strength of age.
Mantra 11
वर्चसा मां समनक्त्वग्निर्मेधां मे विष्णुर्न्यऽनक्त्वासन्। रयिं मे विश्वे नि यच्छन्तु देवाः स्योना मापः पवनैः पुनन्तु
With lustre let Agni anoint me wholly; let Viṣṇu anoint my sacred wit within the mouth. Let all the Gods establish for me wealth; and may the kindly Waters, with their cleansings, purify me.
Mantra 12
मित्रावरुणा परि मामधातामादित्या मा स्वरवो वर्धयन्तु । वर्चो म इन्द्रो न्यनक्तु हस्तयोर्जरदष्टिं मा सविता कृणोतु
Let Mitra-Varuṇa set me round about with guarding; let the Ādityas increase in me the soundness of my voice. Let Indra implant my lustre in the hands; and let Savitar make for me the firm strength of age.
Mantra 13
यो ममार प्रथमो मर्त्यानां यः प्रेयाय प्रथमो लोकमेतम्। वैवस्वतं संगमनं जनानां यमं राजानं हविषा सपर्यत
Him who first of mortals died, who first departed to this world—Vaivasvata, the gathering-place of men—King Yama, with oblation do ye honour.
Mantra 14
परा यात पितर आ च यातायं वो यज्ञो मधुना समक्तः । दत्तो अस्मभ्यं द्रविणेह भद्रं रयिं च नः सर्ववीरं दधात
Depart, O Fathers; and yet return again: this sacrifice of yours is wholly anointed with sweetness. Given is the auspicious treasure here unto us: set ye for us wealth, and riches rich in every hero.
Mantra 15
कण्वः कक्षीवान् पुरुमीढो अगस्त्यः श्यावाश्वः सोभर्यर्चनानाः । विश्वामित्रोऽयं जमदग्निरत्रिरवन्तु नः कश्यपो वामदेवः
Kaṇva, Kakṣīvān, Purumīḍha, Agastya, Śyāvāśva, Sobhari—ye singers of praise; and Viśvāmitra here, and Jamadagni, and Atri—let them be helpers unto us, and Kaśyapa, and Vāmadeva.
Mantra 16
विश्वामित्र जमदग्ने वसिष्ठ भरद्वाज गोतम वामदेव । शर्दिर्नो अत्रिरग्रभीन्नमोभिः सुसंशासः पितरो मृडता नः
O Viśvāmitra, Jamadagni, Vasiṣṭha, Bharadvāja, Gotama, Vāmadeva: Atri hath grasped for us protection with reverences. O Fathers, well-ordained, be gracious unto us.
Mantra 17
कस्ये मृजाना अति यन्ति रिप्रमायुर्दधानाः प्रतरं नवीयः । आप्यायमानाः प्रजया धनेनाध स्याम सुरभयो गृहेषु
Whose are these who, cleansing them, pass beyond defilement, bearing life, onward to a newer furtherance? Thriving with offspring and with wealth—then may we be fragrant of fortune within our homes.
Mantra 18
अञ्जते व्यऽञ्जते समञ्जते क्रतुं रिहन्ति मधुनाभ्यऽञ्जते । सिन्धोरुच्छ्वासे पतयन्तमुक्षणं हिरण्यपावाः पशुमासु गृह्णते
They anoint, they anoint abroad, they anoint wholly; they lick the purpose, with sweetness they anoint thereon. In Sindhu’s upsurge they seize the flying bull: the golden-purifiers take him among the cattle-wealth.
Mantra 19
यद् वो मुद्रं पितरः सोम्यं च तेनो सचध्वं स्वयशसो हि भूत। ते अर्वाणः कवय आ शृणोत सुविदत्रा विदथे हूयमानाः
What token, O Fathers, and what Soma-gladdening sign is yours—therewith consort ye, for ye are of self-won glory. Ye swift ones, ye sages, hearken hither, good givers, being called in the rite-assembly.
Mantra 20
ये अत्रयो अङ्गिरसो नवग्वा इष्टावन्तो रातिषाचो दधानाः । दक्षिणावन्तः सुकृतो य उ स्थासद्यास्मिन् बर्हिषि मादयध्वम्
Ye Atris, ye Angirases, ye Navagvas—rich in sacrifice, bearing the winning of gifts; ye endowed with fees, ye doers of good—since such indeed ye are, sit down upon this sacred grass and take your gladness.
Mantra 21
अधा यथा नः पितरः परासः प्रत्नासो अग्न ऋतमाशशानाः । शुचीदयन् दीध्यत उक्थशासः क्षामा भिन्दन्तो अरुणीरप व्रन्
Then, as our Fathers of old, the ancient ones, O Agni, longing for the Right, made pure and shone—hymn-declaimers—cleaving the earth, they drave away the ruddy (dawns) afar.
Mantra 22
सुकर्मानः सुरुचो देवयन्तो अयो न देवा जनिमा धमन्तः । शुचन्तो अग्निं वावृधन्त इन्द्रमुर्वीं गव्यां परिषदं नो अक्रन्
Good workers, fair-shining, godward, like gods forging as with iron the very birth—being pure they strengthened Agni; and Indra they strengthened; and for us they made a wide, cattle-rich enclosure and assembly-seat.
Mantra 23
आ यूथेव क्षुमति पश्वो अख्यद् देवानां जनिमान्त्युग्रः । मर्तासश्चिदुर्वशीरकृप्रन् वृधे चिदर्य उपरस्यायोः
Forth, like a herd in might, there came to sight the births of gods—so mighty was it. Even mortals fashioned Urvaśīs, yea, for increase—even the Arya, of higher Āyu’s line.
Mantra 24
अकर्म ते स्वपसो अभूम ऋतमवस्रन्नुषसो विभातीः । विश्वं तद् भद्रं यदवन्ति देवा बृहद् वदेम विदथे सुवीराः
We have achieved for thee the work of good effect; the Dawns, radiant, have let the Rite unfold. All that is blessed is that which the Gods befriend: may we in the solemn session speak lofty speech, rich in goodly sons.
Mantra 25
इन्द्रो मा मरुत्वान् प्राच्या दिशः पातु बाहुच्युता पृथिवी द्यामिवोपरि । लोककृतः पथिकृतो यजामहे ये देवानां हुतभागा इह स्थ
May Indra, with the Maruts, guard me from the eastern quarter; and Earth, slipped from my arm, be over me as it were the Sky. The world-ordainers, the path-ordainers—those who have their portion of oblation among the Gods—we worship: here may they stand.
Mantra 26
धाता मा निरृत्या दक्षिणाया दिशः पातु बाहुच्युता पृथिवी द्यामिवोपरि । लोककृतः पथिकृतो यजामहे ये देवानां हुतभागा इह स्थ
May Dhātṛ guard me from Nirṛti, from the southern quarter; and Earth, slipped from my arm, be over me as it were the Sky. The world-ordainers, the path-ordainers—those who have their portion of oblation among the Gods—we worship: here may they stand.
Mantra 27
अदितिर्मादित्यैः प्रतीच्या दिशः पातु बाहुच्युता पृथिवी द्यामिवोपरि । लोककृतः पथिकृतो यजामहे ये देवानां हुतभागा इह स्थ
May Aditi, with the Ādityas, guard me from the western quarter; and Earth, slipped from my arm, be over me as it were the Sky. The world-ordainers, the path-ordainers—those who have their portion of oblation among the Gods—we worship: here may they stand.

सोमो मा विश्वैर्देवैरुदीच्या दिशः पातु बाहुच्युता पृथिवी द्यामिवोपरि । लोककृतः पथिकृतो यजामहे ये देवानां हुतभागा इह स्थ
May Soma, with all the Gods, guard me from the northern quarter; and Earth, slipped from my arm, be over me as it were the Sky. The world-ordainers, the path-ordainers—those who have their portion of oblation among the Gods—we worship: here may they stand.
Mantra 29
धर्ता ह त्वा धरुणो धारयाता ऊर्ध्वं भानुं सविता द्यामिवोपरि । लोककृतः पथिकृतो यजामहे ये देवानां हुतभागा इह स्थ
The Holder—yea, the firm Support—shall hold thee fast; Savitar hath set the beam aloft, as ’twere the sky above. We worship the World-ordainers, the Path-ordainers, who have their portion in the offered gift: be present here.

ऊर्ध्वायां त्वा दिशि पुरा संवृतः स्वधायामा दधामि बाहुच्युता पृथिवी द्यामिवोपरि । लोककृतः पथिकृतो यजामहे ये देवानां हुतभागा इह स्थ
In the upward quarter, as erst was done, enclosed in Svadhā, I set thee—released from mortal arms—upon the Earth, as though aloft like Heaven. We worship the World-fashioners, the Path-fashioners, who have their portion in the gods’ oblations: be ye here present.

धर्तासि धरुणोऽसि वंसगोऽसि
Thou art the Holder; thou art the Firm Support; thou art the Resting-place.
Mantra 37
उदपूरसि मधुपूरसि वातपूरसि
Thou art filled with Water; thou art filled with Sweetness; thou art filled with Breath.
Mantra 38
इतश्च मामुतश्चावतां यमे इव यतमाने यदैतम्। प्र वां भरन् मानुषा देवयन्तो आ सीदतां स्वमु लोकं विदाने
From this side and from that side, as though in Yama’s domain, let them protect me, the twain who strive, when men, god-seeking, bear this one forth. Let them sit down, finding their own world, their proper realm.
Mantra 39
स्वासस्थे भवतमिन्दवे नो युजे वां ब्रह्म पूर्व्यं नमोभिः । वि श्लोक एति पथ्येऽव सूरिः शृण्वन्तु विश्वे अमृतास एतत्
Be ye in sound estate for us, O Indu: for your yoking we bring, with reverent homage, the ancient spell. Forth goes the proclamation on the wholesome path; let all the Immortals hearken unto this.
Mantra 40
त्रीणि पदानि रुपो अन्वरोहच्चतुष्पदीमन्वैतद् व्रतेन । अक्षरेण प्रति मिमीते अर्कमृतस्य नाभावभि सं पुनाति
Three steps the Form ascended, following after; the four-footed measure followed this by holy ordinance. With the imperishable syllable he metes the chant in counterpoise; upon the navel of Order he wholly makes purification.
Mantra 41
देवेभ्यः कमवृणीत मृत्युं प्रजायै किममृतं नावृणीत । बृहस्पतिर्यज्ञमतनुत ऋषिः प्रियां यमस्तन्व१मा रिरेच
For the Gods—who was it chose Death for the progeny? why chose he not immortality? Bṛhaspati, the Seer, stretched forth the Sacrifice; Yama relinquished his dear body.
Mantra 42
त्वमग्न ईडितो जातवेदोऽवाड्ढव्यानि सुरभीणि कृत्वा। प्रादाः पितृभ्यः स्वधया ते अक्षन्नद्धि त्वं देव प्रयता हवींषि
Thou, Agni, praised, O Jātavedas, having made the offerings fragrant, hast borne them down and given them to the Fathers with svadhā; they have eaten. Do thou, O God, eat the well-prepared oblations.
Mantra 43
आसीनासो अरुणीनामुपस्थे रयिं धत्त दाशुषे मर्त्याय । पुत्रेभ्यः पितरस्तस्य वस्वः प्र यच्छत त इहोर्जं दधात
Seated in the lap of the Ruddy Ones, bestow ye wealth upon the mortal who hath offered. O Fathers, O bounteous ones, grant it forth unto his sons: may they here establish nourishment and strength.
Mantra 44
अग्निष्वात्ताः पितर एह गच्छत सदःसदः सदत सुप्रणीतयः । अत्तो हवींषि प्रयतानि बर्हिषि रयिं च नः सर्ववीरं दधात
Ye Fathers, Agni-fed, come hither; sit ye down, seat after seat, ye rightly guided. As eaters, eat the oblations duly set upon the sacred grass, and bestow on us wealth, with all brave offspring.
Mantra 45
उपहूता नः पितरः सोम्यासो बर्हिष्येऽषु निधिषु प्रियेषु । त आ गमन्तु त इह श्रुवन्त्वधि ब्रुवन्तु तेऽवन्त्वस्मान्
Invited are our Fathers, Soma-worthy: swiftly to the barhis, to the treasured, dear deposits. Let them come hither; here let them hearken; let them speak with authority; let them help and guard us.
Mantra 46
ये नः पितुः पितरो ये पितामहा अनूजहिरे सोमपीथं वसिष्ठाः । तेभिर्यमः संरराणो हवींष्युशन्नुशद्भिः प्रतिकाममत्तु
They who are Fathers of our father, they who are grandfathers, who in succession reached the Soma-drinking—those most excellent: with them let Yama, rejoicing, eat the oblations, himself desiring, with the desirous, according to each wish.
Mantra 47
ये तातृषुर्देवत्रा जेहमाना होत्राविदः स्तोमतष्टासो अर्कैः । आग्ने याहि सहस्रं देववन्दैः सत्यैः कविभिर्ऋषिभिर्घर्मसद्भिः
They who have thirsted godward, hastening—knowers of the Hotṛ’s work, hymn-shapers with their songs: O Agni, come hither with a thousand god-praisers, with true poets, with seers, with the gharmasitting sages.
Mantra 48
ये सत्यासो हविरदो हविष्पा इन्द्रेण देवैः सरथं तुरेण । आग्ने याहि सुविदत्रेभिरर्वाङ् परैः पूर्वैर्ऋषिभिर्घर्मसद्भिः
They who are true, oblation-eaters, guardians of the oblation, with Indra and the Gods on one swift chariot: O Agni, come hitherward with good bestowers, with later and with former seers, with the gharmasitting sages.
Mantra 49
उप सर्प मातरं भूमिमेतामुरुव्यचसं पृथिवीं सुशेवाम्। ऊर्णम्रदाः पृथिवी दक्षिणावत एषा त्वा पातु प्रपथे पुरस्तात्
Creep thou nigh unto this Mother Earth, the wide-expanding, the broad, the gracious. Soft as wool is Earth, rich in auspicious right-hand fortune: may she protect thee on thy forward way, in front.
Mantra 50
उच्छ्वञ्चस्व पृथिवि मा नि बाधथाः सूपायनास्मै भव सूपसर्पणा। माता पुत्रं यथा सिचाभ्येऽनं भूम ऊर्णुहि
Lift thee, O Earth; press him not down, nor harm. Be easy of access for him, easy to be approached. As a mother with her garment-fold covers her son, so, O Soil, enfold this man.
Mantra 51
उच्छ्वञ्चमाना पृथिवी सु तिष्ठतु सहस्रं मित उप हि श्रयन्ताम्। ते गृहासो घृतश्चुतः स्योना विश्वाहास्मै शरणाः सन्त्वत्र
Let Earth, uprising, stand fast and fair; let a thousand measured portions rest upon her. Let those houses, ghee-distilling, pleasant, be for him here—shelters for all days.
Mantra 52
उत् ते स्तभ्नामि पृथिवीं त्वत् परीमं लोगं निदधन्मो अहं रिषम्। एतां स्थूणां पितरो धारयन्ति ते तत्र यमः सादना ते कृणोतु
Up do I prop the Earth for thee, setting round about this region—may I suffer no hurt. This pillar the Fathers hold aloft for thee: there may Yama make for thee a seat, an abiding-place.
Mantra 53
इममग्ने चमसं मा वि जिह्वरः प्रियो देवानामुत सोम्यानाम्। अयं यश्चमसो देवपानस्तस्मिन् देवा अमृता मादयन्ताम्
This cup, O Agni, do not thou overturn or mar—dear to the Gods, and dear to the Soma-worthy. This is the cup, the draught of Gods: therein let the immortal Gods take joy and exult.
Mantra 54
अथर्वा पूर्णं चमसं यमिन्द्रायाबिभर्वाजिनीवते । तस्मिन् कृणोति सुकृतस्य भक्षं तस्मिनिन्दुः पवते विश्वदानीम्
Atharvan beareth forth the brimming cup which he presenteth unto Indra, the Lord of winning might. Therein he fashioneth the portion of the well-wrought merit; therein the bright Soma-drop is purified, bestowing gifts on every side.
Mantra 55
यत् ते कृष्णः शकुन आतुतोद पिपीलः सर्प उत वा श्वापदः । अग्निष्टद् विश्वादगदं कृणोतु सोमश्च यो ब्राह्मणां आविवेश
Whatsoever black bird hath smitten thee, or ant, or serpent, yea or savage beast—let Agni make that from all sides an antidote; and Soma too, who hath entered into the Brahmans.
Mantra 56
पयस्वतीरोषधयः पयस्वन्मामकं पयः । अपां पयसो यत् पयस्तेन मा सह शुम्भतु
Ye milkful Herbs, make milkful mine own vital milk. With that milk which is the milk of Waters, therewith, together, let it make me fair and strong.
Mantra 57
इमा नारीरविधवाः सुपत्नीराञ्जनेन सर्पिषा सं स्पृशन्ताम्। अनश्रवो अनमीवाः सुरत्ना आ रोहन्तु जनयो योनिमग्रे
Let these women, unwidowed, good wives, with collyrium and with ghee make full anointing-touch. Of stainless fame, free from disease, rich in fair treasure, let the mothers mount the womb, in the foremost place.
Mantra 58
सं गच्छस्व पितृभिः सं यमेनेष्टापूर्तेन परमे व्योऽमन्। हित्वावद्यं पुनरस्तमेहि सं गच्छतां तन्वाऽ सुवर्चाः
Go thou in union with the Fathers, in union with Yama, with iṣṭa and pūrta, in the highest heaven. Leaving behind all blemish, come again unto thy home of rest: let the radiant self go forth in concord.
Mantra 59
ये नः पितुः पितरो ये पितामहा य आविविशुरुर्व१न्तरिक्षम्। तेभ्यः स्वराडसुनीतिर्नो अद्य वथावशं तन्वः कल्पयाति
Those Fathers of our father, those grandsires, who have passed and entered the broad mid-air—unto them the self-ruling Life-guidance, even to-day, disposeth for our bodies a state not subject to the compulsion of the road.
Mantra 60
शं ते नीहारो भवतु शं ते प्रुष्वाव शीयताम्। शीतिके शीतिकावति ह्लादिके ह्लादिकावति । मण्डूक्य१प्सु शं भुव इमं स्व१ग्निं शमय
Weal be to thee: let mist be thine; weal be to thee: let the sprinkling-dew sink down and abate. O Cooling One, rich in coolness; O Refreshing One, rich in refreshment—frog-born in the waters, be thou for peace; this goodly fire do thou appease.
Mantra 61
विवस्वान्नो अभयं कृणोतु यः सुत्रामा जीरदानुः सुदानुः । इहेमे वीरा बहवो भवन्तु गोमदश्ववन्मय्यस्तु पुष्टम्
May Vivasvant make for us fearlessness—he, the good protector, of bounty that endureth, of liberal giving. Here may these our heroes be many; in me be thriving, rich in kine, rich in steeds.
Mantra 62
विवस्वान् नो अमृतत्वे दधातु परैतु मृत्युरमृतं न ऐतु । इमान् रक्षतु पुरुषाना जरिम्णो मो ष्वेऽषामसवो यमं गुः
May Vivasvant set us in deathlessness; away let Death depart—let the Deathless come to us. Let him guard these persons from wasting age; let not, indeed, their breaths, in their own proper seats, go forth unto Yama.
Mantra 63
यो दध्रे अन्तरिक्षे न मह्ना पितॄणां कविः प्रमतिर्मतीनाम्। तमर्चत विश्वमित्रा हविर्भिः स नो यमः प्रतरं जीवसे धात्
He who is set in the mid-air, as by his greatness—the Fathers’ sage, the forethought of men’s thoughts—him worship, O ye friends of all, with oblations: may that Yama ordain for us a further passage unto life.
Mantra 64
आ रोहत दिवमुत्तमामृषयो मा बिभीतन । सोमपाः सोमपायिन इदं वः क्रियते हविरगन्म ज्वोतिरुत्तमम्
Ascend ye to heaven, the highest; O Seers, be not afraid. Ye Soma-drinkers, Soma-imbibing, for you is this oblation wrought: we have attained the Light supreme.
Mantra 65
प्र केतुना बृहता भात्यग्निरा रोदसी वृषभो रोरवीति । दिवश्चिदन्तादुपमामुदानडपामुपस्थे महिषो ववर्ध
Forth with his mighty ensign shines Agni; the Bull roars unto both the worlds. From heaven’s very limit unto the nearer bound he surged aloft; in the lap of waters the mighty one hath waxed.
Mantra 66
नाके सुपर्णमुप यत् पतन्तं हृदा वेनन्तो अभ्यचक्षत त्वा । हिरण्यपक्षं वरुणस्य दूतं यमस्य यो नौ शकुनं भुरण्युम्
When in the heavenly vault they marked thee, the fair-winged, flying near—discerning with the heart—they beheld thee: the golden-winged, Varuṇa’s messenger, Yama’s, who for us art omen-bird, swift-roaming.
Mantra 67
इन्द्र क्रतुं न आ भर पिता पुत्रेभ्यो यथा । शिक्षा णो अस्मिन् पुरुहूत यामनि जीवा ज्योतिरशीमहि
Indra, bring us hither strength of purpose, as a father unto sons. In this our way, O much-invoked, instruct us: living, may we attain the Light.
Mantra 68
अपूपापिहितान् कुम्भान् यांस्ते देवा अधारयन्। ते ते सन्तु स्वधावन्तो मधुमन्तो घृतश्चुतः
The jars which the Gods for thee established, covered with sacrificial cakes—let those be thine, endowed with svadhā, honey-rich, and dripping with clarified butter.
Mantra 69
यास्ते धाना अनुकिरामि तिलमिश्रा स्वधावतीः । तास्ते सन्तु विभ्वीः प्रभ्वीस्तास्ते यमो राजानु मन्यताम्
The grains which I strew for thee in order, mingled with sesame, rich in Svadhā—let those be thine, abundant and of prevailing might; let Yama the King, in due course, acknowledge them for thee.
Mantra 70
पुनर्देहि वनस्पते य एष निहितस्त्वयि । यथा यमस्य सादन आसातै विदथा वदन्
Give back again, O Lord of the Forest, this that is laid within thee, that, speaking the ordinances, he may win his way unto the seat of Yama.
Mantra 71
आ रभस्व जातवेदस्तेजस्वद्धरो अस्तु ते । शरीरमस्य सं दहाथैनं धेहि सुकृतामु लोके
Seize him, O Jātavedas; let thine be brilliant bearing-power. Burn wholly the body of this man; and set him, verily, in the world of the well-deserving.
Mantra 72
ये ते पूर्वे परागता अपरे पितरश्च ये। तेभ्यो घृतस्य कुल्यैऽतु शतधारा व्युन्दती
To those thy Fathers, the former who have gone afar, and the later who are—unto them let the channel of ghee go forth, a hundred-streamed flood welling and spreading.
Mantra 73
एतदा रोह वय उन्मृजानः स्वा इह बृहदु दीदयन्ते । अभि प्रेहि मध्यतो माप हास्थाः पितॄनां लोकं प्रथमो यो अत्र
Ascend thou this, cleansing away thy strength anew: thine own here shine forth in lofty splendour. Go on toward them through the midst; stand not aside: the world of the Fathers—he is foremost here who reaches it.
Aghnyā is the ‘cow not to be slain,’ a symbol of inviolate auspiciousness and right order. Here she functions as a benevolent guide who knows the human world and conducts the deceased along the gods’ path toward heaven.
Yama is portrayed as the first mortal to die and the king of the ancestral realm. Honoring him with havis seeks lawful admission of the deceased into the ancestral gathering-place and prevents disorder for the living.
They recall the Pitṛs as successful ritual workers who strengthened key gods and established a protected, prosperous enclosure for descendants. This frames the funeral rite as part of an ongoing ancestral protection that stabilizes the community after death.
