Soma Pavamana / Soma (pressed Soma as supreme havis)
This Pavamāna Soma hymn praises the freshly pressed Soma as the supreme oblation, urging its streams to be poured, purified, and set in the ritual circuit. As Soma runs “clothed in the waters,” it becomes intoxicating delight for gods and seers, establishes itself on the cosmic “ocean-seat,” and generates light—making the radiant “cows/rays” shine forth.
Mantra 1
परीतो षिञ्चता सुतं सोमो य उत्तमं हविः । दधन्वाँ यो नर्यो अप्स्वन्तरा सुषाव सोममद्रिभिः ॥
Pour all around the pressed Soma—he who is the supreme offering. He who bears the manly power, who within the waters has been pressed out by the stones: let that Soma be established in the circle of our work.
Mantra 2
नूनं पुनानोऽविभिः परि स्रवादब्धः सुरभिन्तरः । सुते चित्त्वाप्सु मदामो अन्धसा श्रीणन्तो गोभिरुत्तरम् ॥
Now, being purified, flow all around through the sheep’s-wool (filter), invincible and more perfectly fragrant. Even when pressed, we rejoice in you in the waters by your ecstasy; we strengthen (our being) with the rays of Light, rising to the higher level.
Mantra 3
परि सुवानश्चक्षसे देवमादनः क्रतुरिन्दुर्विचक्षणः ॥
Flowing all around, you are seen—O delight of the gods; the luminous drop, the will of action, wide-seeing in discernment.
Mantra 4
पुनानः सोम धारयापो वसानो अर्षसि । आ रत्नधा योनिमृतस्य सीदस्युत्सो देव हिरण्ययः ॥
Purifying yourself, O Soma, you flow in a stream, clothed with the waters. O holder of the riches, you take your seat in the womb of Ṛta, a golden spring, O god.
Mantra 5
दुहान ऊधर्दिव्यं मधु प्रियं प्रत्नं सधस्थमासदत् । आपृच्छ्यं धरुणं वाज्यर्षति नृभिर्धूतो विचक्षणः ॥
Milking the heavenly udder—the dear honey—he has reached the ancient seat of union. Seeking the firm foundation, the impelling force flows on, purified by the human powers, wide-seeing in discernment.
Mantra 6
पुनानः सोम जागृविरव्यो वारे परि प्रियः । त्वं विप्रो अभवोऽङ्गिरस्तमो मध्वा यज्ञं मिमिक्ष नः ॥
Purifying yourself, O Soma, wakeful and dear, you move around in the woolen filter. You have become the seer, most Angiras-like; with your sweetness mingle and enrich our sacrifice.
Mantra 7
सोमो मीढ्वान्पवते गातुवित्तम ऋषिर्विप्रो विचक्षणः । त्वं कविरभवो देववीतम आ सूर्यं रोहयो दिवि ॥
Soma, rich in giving, flows—best finder of the path—seer and inspired, wide-seeing. You have become the poet, most welcome to the gods; you make the Sun mount in heaven.
Mantra 8
सोम उ षुवाणः सोतृभिरधि ष्णुभिरवीनाम् । अश्वयेव हरिता याति धारया मन्द्रया याति धारया ॥
Soma indeed, being pressed by the pressers, moves upon the ridges of the sheep’s-wool. Like a horse, the golden-green one goes by the stream; by the rapturous stream he goes.
Mantra 9
अनूपे गोमान्गोभिरक्षाः सोमो दुग्धाभिरक्षाः । समुद्रं न संवरणान्यग्मन्मन्दी मदाय तोशते ॥
In the waterless expanse, rich in light, Soma has flowed—flowed with the rays, flowed with the milk-mixtures. Like coverings opening to the sea, the barriers have gone; the gladdening one is satisfied for ecstasy.
Mantra 10
आ सोम सुवानो अद्रिभिस्तिरो वाराण्यव्यया । जनो न पुरि चम्वोर्विशद्धरिः सदो वनेषु दधिषे ॥
Come, O Soma, being pressed by the stones, passing through the woolen gates. Like a people entering a fortress, the shining tawny one enters the bowls; you establish your seat in the wood-(vats).
Mantra 11
स मामृजे तिरो अण्वानि मेष्यो मीळ्हे सप्तिर्न वाजयुः । अनुमाद्यः पवमानो मनीषिभिः सोमो विप्रेभिॠक्वभिः ॥
He has cleansed himself, passing through the fine threads—like a ram—like a steed eager for plenitude. Following after the ecstasy, Soma the purifying one is urged on by the thinkers, by the inspired singers.
Mantra 12
प्र सोम देववीतये सिन्धुर्न पिप्ये अर्णसा । अंशोः पयसा मदिरो न जागृविरच्छा कोशं मधुश्चुतम् ॥
Go forth, O Soma, for the gods’ glad welcome; swell like a river with your streaming flood. Awake and rouse us with the intoxicating milk of your essence; flow straight to the honey-dripping vessel (the heart’s cup).
Mantra 13
आ हर्यतो अर्जुने अत्के अव्यत प्रियः सूनुर्न मर्ज्यः । तमीं हिन्वन्त्यपसो यथा रथं नदीष्वा गभस्त्योः ॥
He has been woven out upon the shining tawny filter, dear like a son to be cleansed and made ready. The active energies drive him on, as one urges a chariot, along the river-courses, into the two hands (that receive and bear him).
Mantra 14
अभि सोमास आयवः पवन्ते मद्यं मदम् । समुद्रस्याधि विष्टपि मनीषिणो मत्सरासः स्वर्विदः ॥
The Soma-streams, eager in their movement, purify themselves into the rapturous delight. Upon the ocean’s wide seat they take their station—thinkers, ecstasy-bearers, finders of the Sun-world (the luminous plane).
Mantra 15
तरत्समुद्रं पवमान ऊर्मिणा राजा देव ऋतं बृहत् । अर्षन्मित्रस्य वरुणस्य धर्मणा प्र हिन्वान ऋतं बृहत् ॥
Purifying, the divine King crosses the ocean with his wave; he moves in the vast Truth (ṛtam bṛhat). Flowing by the law of Mitra and Varuṇa, he is driven forward—pressing on the vast Truth.
Mantra 16
नृभिर्येमानो हर्यतो विचक्षणो राजा देवः समुद्रियः ॥
Measured and guided by the human powers, luminous in his motion, the discerning divine King becomes oceanic—vast in being and vision.
Mantra 17
इन्द्राय पवते मदः सोमो मरुत्वते सुतः । सहस्रधारो अत्यव्यमर्षति तमी मृजन्त्यायवः ॥
For Indra the ecstasy flows—Soma pressed for the Lord of the Maruts. Thousand-streamed, he rushes beyond the fleece-filter; and the eager energies cleanse him and make him bright.
Mantra 18
पुनानश्चमू जनयन्मतिं कविः सोमो देवेषु रण्यति । अपो वसानः परि गोभिरुत्तरः सीदन्वनेष्वव्यत ॥
Purifying, Soma the Seer forms the host (the inner formation) and brings forth inspired thought; he takes joy among the gods. Clothed with the waters and encompassed by the rays (cows of light), he rises upward, taking his seat in the wooden vats, and is strained.
Mantra 19
तवाहं सोम रारण सख्य इन्दो दिवेदिवे । पुरूणि बभ्रो नि चरन्ति मामव परिधीँरति ताँ इहि ॥
In your friendship, O Soma, I take my delight day after day. Many are the dusky encirclings that move below me; come—carry me beyond those enclosing boundaries.
Mantra 20
उताहं नक्तमुत सोम ते दिवा सख्याय बभ्र ऊधनि । घृणा तपन्तमति सूर्यं परः शकुना इव पप्तिम ॥
And I, by night and by day, O Soma, for your friendship, take my place on the dusky foundation; yet I would fly beyond, past the sun that burns with heat, like birds on their far flight.
Mantra 21
मृज्यमानः सुहस्त्य समुद्रे वाचमिन्वसि । रयिं पिशङ्गं बहुलं पुरुस्पृहं पवमानाभ्यर्षसि ॥
As you are cleansed, O skilful-handed one, you set the Word in motion in the ocean-vast. You flow forth, O Pavamāna, bringing the tawny radiance-wealth—abundant, manifold, much desired.
Mantra 22
मृजानो वारे पवमानो अव्यये वृषाव चक्रदो वने । देवानां सोम पवमान निष्कृतं गोभिरञ्जानो अर्षसि ॥
Cleansing thyself in the waters, O Soma, as thou flowest through the imperishable (wool) filter, a strong Bull, thou makest thy radiant movement in the wood (of the pressing). O Soma, in thy purification, thou streamest forth—made ready for the gods—brightened and anointed by the Rays of Light (the cows).
Mantra 23
पवस्व वाजसातयेऽभि विश्वानि काव्या । त्वं समुद्रं प्रथमो वि धारयो देवेभ्यः सोम मत्सरः ॥
Flow forth for the winning of plenitudes of force (vāja); encompass all inspired poetries. Thou, O Soma, art the first who settest the ocean (of consciousness) in its wide outpouring for the gods—O exultant giver of rapture.
Mantra 24
स तू पवस्व परि पार्थिवं रजो दिव्या च सोम धर्मभिः । त्वां विप्रासो मतिभिर्विचक्षण शुभ्रं हिन्वन्ति धीतिभिः ॥
Therefore flow, O Soma, around the earthly region and the heavenly by thy laws of right working. The seers, O clear-sighted one, urge thee—pure and bright—with their thought and their concentrated insights.
Mantra 25
पवमाना असृक्षत पवित्रमति धारया । मरुत्वन्तो मत्सरा इन्द्रिया हया मेधामभि प्रयांसि च ॥
The purifying streams have been let loose beyond the filter in their current. With the Maruts’ force they are rapturous; they are powers of Indra, swift steeds, pressing towards intelligence (medhā) and towards the forward movements (prayāṃsi).
Mantra 26
अपो वसानः परि कोशमर्षतीन्दुर्हियानः सोतृभिः । जनयञ्ज्योतिर्मन्दना अवीवशद्गाः कृण्वानो न निर्णिजम् ॥
Clothed in the waters, the drop (Indu) streams around the vessel, urged on by the pressers. Creating the Light, rejoicing, he makes the Rays (the cows) to shine forth, as one fashioning a radiant robe (a bright vesture of manifestation).
The deity is Soma Pavamāna—Soma in the act of being purified after pressing, praised as the highest sacrificial offering.
It describes Soma being pressed, purified, and poured in the sacrifice, and says this purified Soma brings inspired joy and reveals spiritual ‘light’ (svar).
Waters and the vessel/strainer describe the real purification process in the ritual, while ‘light’ expresses the deeper result: clarity, insight, and the opening of the luminous realm.
