This Triṣṭubh hymn of Vasiṣṭha calls Indra to draw near to the soma-pressing and to listen closely to the poet’s invocation, affirming that no mortal can rival the god who is “rich in help.” It weaves praise of Indra’s might and generosity with a strong thread of śraddhā (trust/faith) as the force that carries the worshipper toward victory and plenitude. The hymn concludes as a protective prayer: with Indra as companion, may hidden dangers not overtake us, and may we cross beyond obstructing “waters” and enduring descents.

Mantra 1

मो षु त्वा वाघतश्चनारे अस्मन्नि रीरमन् । आरात्ताच्चित्सधमादं न आ गहीह वा सन्नुप श्रुधि ॥

Let not the singer’s call drive you away from us into distance; even from afar come to our common ecstasy—come here, be present, and listen close.

Mantra 2

इमे हि ते ब्रह्मकृतः सुते सचा मधौ न मक्ष आसते । इन्द्रे कामं जरितारो वसूयवो रथे न पादमा दधुः ॥

These makers of the mantra sit with your pressed soma as if in honeyed sweetness; desiring the riches of being, the praisers have set their footing in Indra, as one sets a foot on the chariot-step.

Mantra 3

रायस्कामो वज्रहस्तं सुदक्षिणं पुत्रो न पितरं हुवे ॥

Desiring the fullness of being, I call the Thunder-Force in his hand, the perfectly right-guiding Power, as a son calls his father for help and protection.

Mantra 4

इम इन्द्राय सुन्विरे सोमासो दध्याशिरः । ताँ आ मदाय वज्रहस्त पीतये हरिभ्यां याह्योक आ ॥

These Soma-pressings are prepared for Indra, mixed with the strengthening curd; come, O wielder of the thunder-force, for the ecstasy and for the drinking—ride with thy two luminous powers and enter the home of the offering.

Mantra 5

श्रवच्छ्रुत्कर्ण ईयते वसूनां नू चिन्नो मर्धिषद्गिरः । सद्यश्चिद्यः सहस्राणि शता ददन्नकिर्दित्सन्तमा मिनत् ॥

He moves toward the hearing ear, toward the riches; even now may he strengthen our words—he who at once gives thousands and hundreds, and no one diminishes him when he is in the act of giving.

Mantra 6

स वीरो अप्रतिष्कुत इन्द्रेण शूशुवे नृभिः । यस्ते गभीरा सवनानि वृत्रहन्त्सुनोत्या च धावति ॥

That hero, not turned back, grows strong with Indra and with the men of force—he who, O slayer of the Coverer, presses out thy deep Soma-offerings and hastens toward thee.

Mantra 7

भवा वरूथं मघवन्मघोनां यत्समजासि शर्धतः । वि त्वाहतस्य वेदनं भजेमह्या दूणाशो भरा गयम् ॥

Become our protecting shelter, O bounteous one, of the bounteous host when thou gatherest them in their companies; let us share the winning of the smitten foe—bring to us the gain and plenitude from the distressed and hostile powers.

Mantra 8

सुनोता सोमपाव्ने सोममिन्द्राय वज्रिणे । पचता पक्तीरवसे कृणुध्वमित्पृणन्नित्पृणते मयः ॥

Press the Soma for the Soma-drinker, for Indra the thunder-bearer; cook the offerings and make them ready for his help—he who fills, gives delight to the one who would be filled.

मा स्रेधत सोमिनो दक्षता महे कृणुध्वं राय आतुजे । तरणिरिज्जयति क्षेति पुष्यति न देवासः कवत्नवे ॥

Do not fail, O Soma-pressers; be capable—work for the great, for the swift-coming plenitude. The overpassing power indeed conquers, dwells, and increases; the gods are not for the faint-striving.

Mantra 10

नकिः सुदासो रथं पर्यास न रीरमत् । इन्द्रो यस्याविता यस्य मरुतो गमत्स गोमति व्रजे ॥

No one can hem in or halt the chariot of the good-giver; he does not falter. He for whom Indra is the helper, and for whom the Maruts come, enters the luminous cattlefold of plenitude.

Mantra 11

गमद्वाजं वाजयन्निन्द्र मर्त्यो यस्य त्वमविता भुवः । अस्माकं बोध्यविता रथानामस्माकं शूर नृणाम् ॥

The mortal who makes the plenitude of force increase reaches the prize, when thou becomest his helper, O Indra. Become our helper—of our chariots, and of our men of striving, O hero.

Mantra 12

उदिन्न्वस्य रिच्यतेंऽशो धनं न जिग्युषः । य इन्द्रो हरिवान्न दभन्ति तं रिपो दक्षं दधाति सोमिनि ॥

Then indeed his portion overflows, like the wealth of one who has won. That Indra, the lord of luminous powers, whom none can deceive—against him the hostile one only sets his own skill in the Soma-presser (and it is undone).

Mantra 13

मन्त्रमखर्वं सुधितं सुपेशसं दधात यज्ञियेष्वा । पूर्वीश्चन प्रसितयस्तरन्ति तं य इन्द्रे कर्मणा भुवत् ॥

Set within the yajña the unbroken mantra, well-forged and of a fair form. Even the ancient impulsions cross over to that one who, by works, becomes effective in Indra.

Mantra 14

कस्तमिन्द्र त्वावसुमा मर्त्यो दधर्षति । श्रद्धा इत्ते मघवन्पार्ये दिवि वाजी वाजं सिषासति ॥

Who, O Indra, the mortal, can dare against you who are rich in help? It is faith in you, O bountiful one, that in the far heaven urges the victorious soul toward the plenitude of force.

Mantra 15

मघोनः स्म वृत्रहत्येषु चोदय ये ददति प्रिया वसु । तव प्रणीती हर्यश्व सूरिभिर्विश्वा तरेम दुरिता ॥

Urge on, in the slayings of the Coverer, those bounteous ones who give the dear riches. By your leading, O Indra of the tawny steeds, with the illumined seers may we cross beyond all difficult passages.

तवेदिन्द्रावमं वसु त्वं पुष्यसि मध्यमम् । सत्रा विश्वस्य परमस्य राजसि नकिष्ट्वा गोषु वृण्वते ॥

Yours indeed, O Indra, is the lowest wealth; you foster the middle. You reign altogether over the supreme of all; none chooses you among the cows (rays) as if you were one power among many.

त्वं विश्वस्य धनदा असि श्रुतो य ईं भवन्त्याजयः । तवायं विश्वः पुरुहूत पार्थिवोऽवस्युर्नाम भिक्षते ॥

You are the giver of the world’s wealth, famed among those who become victorious in the battle. Therefore this whole earthly being, O much-invoked, asks of you for help as his very need.

यदिन्द्र यावतस्त्वमेतावदहमीशीय । स्तोतारमिद्दिधिषेय रदावसो न पापत्वाय रासीय ॥

If, O Indra, I could command even as far as you can, then I would surely establish the singer, O giver of delight—so that I might not give him over to fallen-ness.

शिक्षेयमिन्महयते दिवेदिवे राय आ कुहचिद्विदे । नहि त्वदन्यन्मघवन्न आप्यं वस्यो अस्ति पिता चन ॥

May I learn, day by day, for the growing one, to find the riches anywhere. For apart from you, O bountiful Indra, there is for us no nearer and more excellent good—no, not even a father.

Mantra 20

तरणिरित्सिषासति वाजं पुरंध्या युजा । आ व इन्द्रं पुरुहूतं नमे गिरा नेमिं तष्टेव सुद्र्वम् ॥

The crosser indeed seeks to win the vāja with the yoked power of right discernment. To you, O much-invoked Indra, I bow with speech, like a wheel-rim well-shaped by the craftsman, firm and true in its running.

न दुःष्टुती मर्त्यो विन्दते वसु न स्रेधन्तं रयिर्नशत् । सुशक्तिरिन्मघवन्तुभ्यं मावते देष्णं यत्पार्ये दिवि ॥

By ill-praise the mortal does not find the wealth; nor does the rayi reach one who is slackening. It is by true power, O bountiful, that the giving comes to the one who is devoted—your gift that is in the farther heaven.

Mantra 22

अभि त्वा शूर नोनुमोऽदुग्धा इव धेनवः । ईशानमस्य जगतः स्वर्दृशमीशानमिन्द्र तस्थुषः ॥

Toward you, O hero, we press with our hymns like unmilked cows. O Indra, you are the lord of this moving world, seeing the Sun-world; lord also of all that stands firm.

न त्वावाँ अन्यो दिव्यो न पार्थिवो न जातो न जनिष्यते । अश्वायन्तो मघवन्निन्द्र वाजिनो गव्यन्तस्त्वा हवामहे ॥

None other—neither a power of heaven nor of earth—equals thee, nor has been born, nor shall be born. O Indra the bountiful, seeking the steed (the dynamic force) and the vāja (plenitude of victorious energy), seeking the cows (rays of light/knowledge), we call thee to us.

Mantra 24

अभी षतस्तदा भरेन्द्र ज्यायः कनीयसः । पुरूवसुर्हि मघवन्त्सनादसि भरेभरे च हव्यः ॥

Bring to us that power which overcomes the adversities; O Indra, mightier than the mighty, even for the lesser you are the greater. For thou, O bountiful one, art rich in many treasures from of old, and in every battle-bearing movement thou art the one to be invoked.

Mantra 25

परा णुदस्व मघवन्नमित्रान्त्सुवेदा नो वसू कृधि । अस्माकं बोध्यविता महाधने भवा वृधः सखीनाम् ॥

Thrust far away the hostile powers, O bountiful Indra; make for us the riches that are well-won by right knowledge. Become aware of us as our protector; in the great battle for the plenitude, be the increaser of our comradeship and the strength of our allies.

इन्द्र क्रतुं न आ भर पिता पुत्रेभ्यो यथा । शिक्षा णो अस्मिन्पुरुहूत यामनि जीवा ज्योतिरशीमहि ॥

O Indra, bring to us the will and right intelligence, as a father brings it to his sons. Teach us in this journey, O thou of many calls, so that living, we may attain the Light.

मा नो अज्ञाता वृजना दुराध्यो माशिवासो अव क्रमुः । त्वया वयं प्रवतः शश्वतीरपोऽति शूर तरामसि ॥

Let not unknown perils, hard to think through, assail us; let not unkind powers tread us down. With thee we cross the eternal slopes and pass beyond the waters, O hero—beyond the currents of limitation.
