Fashioning for himself the likeness of the household priest, he went and lay upon that peerless couch. At dawn the king awoke unawares; seeing the palace, he was filled with great astonishment. In his heart he guessed at the sage’s extraordinary power, and rose to depart—without the queen’s knowing. He rode at once into the forest upon a horse; no man or woman in the city knew of it. When what seemed like an age had passed, the lord of the earth returned; in every house there were festivities, music, and rejoicing. But when the king saw the priest, he stared in bewilderment, remembering the very business that had been set in motion. Three days, to the king, went by like an age; the deceitful ‘sage’ remained fixed upon his own design. Knowing the proper time, the priest came and, in counsel, told all and made the king understand.

The assistant priest prepared a banquet—complete with the six tastes and the fourfold variety, as the Vedas sing. By delusive contrivance he set a kitchen at work; the dishes were so many that none could count them. He cooked flesh of many kinds of game; and into it the villain had mixed even a Brahmin’s meat. Then he invited all the Brahmins to dine, washed their feet, and seated them with due honor. But as the king began to serve them, at that very moment a voice sounded from the sky: “Brahmin assembly, rise—rise and go home! It is a grievous wrong: do not eat this food.” For in the kitchen there had come to be ‘Brahmin-flesh’; all the twice-born stood up, accepting the warning in faith. The king, shaken and bewildered in mind, was led astray by delusion—yet destiny compels words to come upon the lips.

“You, a court-linked kinsman, summoned the Brahmin and brought him with the whole company. ‘The Lord is guardian of our dharma; you shall depart, you and your household. Midway through the year your ruin shall be; in your line not one shall remain to offer even water.’ Hearing the curse, the king was shaken and sore afraid; then again a boon-like utterance fell from the sky. Even the Brahmin did not persist in the curse upon reflection: ‘The king has committed no offense.’ All the Brahmins stood astonished on hearing the heavenly voice. The king went to the place where food is eaten. There was no food, nor any Brahmin cook; the king turned back, his mind overwhelmed with boundless anxiety. He related the whole affair to the Brahmins; the realm itself grew frightened and restless.”

Having thus spoken, Mahadeva took his leave; and the citizens received the tidings. They pondered and laid the blame upon fate—he who could turn a swan into a crow was abroad. The royal priest was escorted home; and the demon, disguised as an ascetic, was informed of the news. That wretch sent letters in every direction; fully armed, the kings all rushed with their forces. They encircled the city, beating war-drums; in diverse ways the fighting went on day by day. All the warriors strove, displaying their prowess; the king fell to the earth, along with his kinsmen. Of Satyaketu’s line none survived—how could a brahmin’s curse ever prove untrue? Having conquered the foes, the kings settled in the city; then they departed to their own capitals with victory and renown.

When the destined hour arrived—hear, O sage—there rose that king, attended by a whole demonic court. Ten-headed was he, with twenty arms like pillars: Rāvaṇa by name, a hero, vast and dreadful. His younger brother, famed as the smiter of enemies, became Kumbhakarṇa, an abode of brute strength. The minister who yet retained a liking for righteousness became his younger half-brother. He is known to the world as Vibhīṣaṇa—devotee of Viṣṇu, a treasury of true discernment. The sons and servants who remained with that king became grim and densely swarming demons. Many were those villainous kinds, able to assume forms at will—crooked, terrifying, and void of discrimination. Without compassion, violent, all sinful—so afflicting to the world that their miseries cannot be fully told.

The three brothers performed austerities of many kinds—so fierce and extreme that their full measure cannot be described. Seeing that penance, the Creator drew near and said, “Ask a boon, my child; I am well pleased.” Rāvaṇa, clasping his feet and making supplication, spoke: “Hear me, O Lord of the world. Let me neither be slain by anyone, nor be the slayer of any—save only twice-born men and the races of monkeys and men.” “So be it. You have done great austerity; together with Brahmā I grant you that boon.” Then the Lord went to Kumbhakarṇa; beholding him, his mind was filled with astonishment. “If this wicked one takes food every day, he will lay waste the entire world.” Therefore Śāradā, prompting him, turned his intent aside; and he asked for sleep—six months at a stretch.

Having bestowed the boon, Brahmā departed; and they returned to their own abode, rejoicing. Maya had a daughter named Mandodarī—supremely fair, the very ornament among women. That Maya brought and gave to Rāvaṇa, knowing him to be destined as lord of the rākṣasas. Rāvaṇa was glad to have found so worthy a wife; then he went and married off his two brothers as well. In mid-ocean stood Mount Trikūṭa, an exceedingly massive stronghold, made inaccessible by the Creator’s design. That very Maya later refashioned it for the demon—vast jewel-palaces, wrought in gold. It was like Bhogavatī, the dwelling of the serpent-clans; like Amarāvatī, the city of Śakra. Nay, more lovely still—most charming and splendid—was that Laṅkā, famed throughout the world by name.

There abode many a mighty demon-warrior; they had slain the gods in battle. Now, at Indra’s bidding, there dwelt there innumerable guards belonging to Kubera, lord of the Yakṣas. Somewhere Rāvaṇa, the ten-faced, got wind of this; he marshalled his host and went to besiege the fort. Seeing that dreadful force and the vast array, the Yakṣas carried off their lives and fled into another land. Then Rāvaṇa viewed the whole city; his anxiety departed and his delight grew exceedingly. Judging it fair, naturally impregnable, and hard of access, he made it there his royal capital. He distributed houses to each according to rank and desert, and thus made all the night-roamers prosperous and at ease. Once he raided Kubera himself, and, as though in triumph, brought away the Puṣpaka after conquering it.

Happiness, wealth, sons, armies, and helpers—victory, majesty, strength, counsel, and greatness: all these kept increasing day by day, ever new, as repeated profits only make greed grow. He had a brother like Kumbhakarna, of tremendous might, to whom the world knew no rival champion. He would drink and then sleep for six months; when he awoke, terror seized the three worlds. If he were to eat each day and not lie in that slumber, the whole world would quickly be laid waste. His steadfastness in battle cannot be fully described—no other hero was his equal in boundless strength. Baridanad, his eldest son, was famed in the world as the foremost among warriors; none could stand before him in the fight—he would ever put the city of the gods to flight.

All of them knew the arts of illusion and could assume whatever form they pleased; in them there was neither righteousness nor compassion, not even in a dream. Once the Ten-faced Ravana sat in his court; and beholding his immeasurable clan—sons in multitudes, kinsmen, attendants, and descendants—he saw as it were no end to the race of night-roamers. Seeing his host, arrogant by nature, he spoke words steeped in anger and the intoxication of pride: “Hear me, all you rabble of demons: the gods are our enemies in a great host. They will not fight us face to face; seeing a mighty foe, they keep aloof. There is but one way for their destruction; I will explain it—listen now. Go everywhere and obstruct the feeding of Brahmins, sacrifices, fire-offerings, and rites for the ancestors.”
