Soma Pavamāna

Rig Veda 9.63 is a Pavamāna (self-purifying) Soma hymn that accompanies the pressing and filtering of Soma through the pavitra, praising Soma’s sweet exhilaration (mada) and his power to bestow abundance (rayi), fame (śravas), and heroic force (su-vīrya). Across its Gāyatrī-driven cadence, the hymn repeatedly urges Soma to “flow” toward the sacrificer, carrying divine energies into human life. It culminates in a comprehensive request for all desirable riches—celestial and terrestrial—secured through Soma’s purified outpouring.
Mantra 1
आ पवस्व सहस्रिणं रयिं सोम सुवीर्यम् । अस्मे श्रवांसि धारय ॥
Flow towards us, O Soma, bringing the thousand-fold plenitude (rayi) and the power of true heroism (su-vīrya); establish in us the hearing of inspired truth, the fame that is born of the soul’s victory.
Mantra 2
इषमूर्जं च पिन्वस इन्द्राय मत्सरिन्तमः । चमूष्वा नि षीदसि ॥
Thou swellest in us the will-to-enjoy (iṣ) and the sustaining force (ūrj); most intoxication-giving for Indra, thou takest thy seat within the bowls—settling into the prepared vessels of the being.
Mantra 3
सुत इन्द्राय विष्णवे सोमः कलशे अक्षरत् । मधुमाँ अस्तु वायवे ॥
Pressed out, Soma has streamed into the jar for Indra and for Vishnu; may he be honey-rich for Vayu—delight made sweet and fit for the life-breath’s wide movement.
Mantra 4
एते असृग्रमाशवोऽति ह्वरांसि बभ्रवः । सोमा ऋतस्य धारया ॥
These tawny, swift Somas have rushed forth beyond the crookednesses; they move in the stream of Ṛta—along the right-flowing current of truth-order.
Mantra 5
इन्द्रं वर्धन्तो अप्तुरः कृण्वन्तो विश्वमार्यम् । अपघ्नन्तो अराव्णः ॥
Increasing Indra, the doers of the work (apturaḥ) make all within us noble and luminous (ārya); they strike away the poverty of the being, the forces that diminish our plenitude.
Mantra 6
सुता अनु स्वमा रजोऽभ्यर्षन्ति बभ्रवः । इन्द्रं गच्छन्त इन्दवः ॥
Pressed out, the tawny ones surge along their own path and into the luminous realm; these drops of Soma go towards Indra—towards the power that wins the light.
Mantra 7
अया पवस्व धारया यया सूर्यमरोचयः । हिन्वानो मानुषीरपः ॥
By this stream flow, O Soma—the stream by which thou makest the Sun to shine; driving forward the human waters, thou settest in motion the currents of our nature toward illumination.
Mantra 8
अयुक्त सूर एतशं पवमानो मनावधि । अन्तरिक्षेण यातवे ॥
The luminous one has yoked the swift steed; Pavamāna, set upon the mind, travels through the mid-world—moving between earth and heaven in the field of inner becoming.
Mantra 9
उत त्या हरितो दश सूरो अयुक्त यातवे । इन्दुरिन्द्र इति ब्रुवन् ॥
And the luminous one has yoked the ten tawny steeds for the journey; the bright drop goes forth declaring, ‘I am Indra’—the delight that becomes the victorious power in us.
Mantra 10
परीतो वायवे सुतं गिर इन्द्राय मत्सरम् । अव्यो वारेषु सिञ्चत ॥
Pour all around for Vayu the pressed Soma, and for Indra the exhilarating delight; let the wool-filter shed it into the strains—so the purified sweetness is distributed through the channels of inspired speech.
Mantra 11
पवमान विदा रयिमस्मभ्यं सोम दुष्टरम् । यो दूणाशो वनुष्यता ॥
O Soma, self-purifying, discover for us the Rayi—the fullness of being that is hard to cross over to—so that the powers that bring diminution may be overcome and made to serve the aspiring will.
Mantra 12
अभ्यर्ष सहस्रिणं रयिं गोमन्तमश्विनम् । अभि वाजमुत श्रवः ॥
Flow forth toward us with the thousandfold Rayi—rich in rays of light and powers of swift force—and press forward also the Vāja, the plenitude of energy, and the fame that carries the soul’s victory outward.
Mantra 13
सोमो देवो न सूर्योऽद्रिभिः पवते सुतः । दधानः कलशे रसम् ॥
Soma, a god like the Sun, pressed by the stones, flows in purification, bearing and establishing the essence of delight in the vessel of the being.
Mantra 14
एते धामान्यार्या शुक्रा ऋतस्य धारया । वाजं गोमन्तमक्षरन् ॥
These noble, bright stations of being have flowed out by the stream of Ṛta, pouring forth the Vāja—the plenitude of force—rich with rays of illumined knowledge.
Mantra 15
सुता इन्द्राय वज्रिणे सोमासो दध्याशिरः । पवित्रमत्यक्षरन् ॥
Pressed Somās, blended with curd, have flowed beyond the filter for Indra the wielder of the thunder-force, to feed in him the victorious might within us.
Mantra 16
प्र सोम मधुमत्तमो राये अर्ष पवित्र आ । मदो यो देववीतमः ॥
Go forth, O Soma most rich in honeyed delight; flow into the filter for the sake of Rayi. For this is the ecstasy that is most capable of bringing the gods’ powers into our possession.
Mantra 17
तमी मृजन्त्यायवो हरिं नदीषु वाजिनम् । इन्दुमिन्द्राय मत्सरम् ॥
Him the seekers cleanse—this tawny, forceful one—in the rivers; the Indu, for Indra, the rousing delight that stirs victorious energy.
Mantra 18
आ पवस्व हिरण्यवदश्वावत्सोम वीरवत् । वाजं गोमन्तमा भर ॥
Purify yourself toward us, O Soma, bearing golden light, bearing swift energies, bearing heroic strength; bring to us the Vāja, rich with rays of illumined knowledge.
Mantra 19
परि वाजे न वाजयुमव्यो वारेषु सिञ्चत । इन्द्राय मधुमत्तमम् ॥
As in a contest for the Vāja, pour all around the vājayú Soma into the woollen straining-fleeces, most honeyed-sweet, for Indra—so the victorious force may be secured.
Mantra 20
कविं मृजन्ति मर्ज्यं धीभिर्विप्रा अवस्यवः । वृषा कनिक्रदर्षति ॥
The inspired seekers, desiring the good, cleanse with their thoughts the Poet who is to be purified; the Bull, crying out, rushes onward—an impetuous power of the clarified delight.
Mantra 21
वृषणं धीभिरप्तुरं सोममृतस्य धारया । मती विप्राः समस्वरन् ॥
With illumined thoughts the seers attune themselves together to the mighty Soma, the swift accomplisher, flowing in the stream of Ṛta (the Truth-order).
Mantra 22
पवस्व देवायुषगिन्द्रं गच्छतु ते मदः । वायुमा रोह धर्मणा ॥
Purify yourself, O divine-life-giver; let your ecstasy go to Indra, and ascend to Vāyu by the law of your own true action.
Mantra 23
पवमान नि तोशसे रयिं सोम श्रवाय्यम् । प्रियः समुद्रमा विश ॥
O Soma, purifying, settle into our delight and bring the rayi—richness worthy of inspired hearing; beloved, enter the oceanic plenitude.
Mantra 24
अपघ्नन्पवसे मृधः क्रतुवित्सोम मत्सरः । नुदस्वादेवयुं जनम् ॥
Smiter of attacks, you purify yourself; O Soma, knower of the will, exhilarant: drive away the people who choose not the Divine.
Mantra 25
पवमाना असृक्षत सोमाः शुक्रास इन्दवः । अभि विश्वानि काव्या ॥
The purifying Somas, bright drops, have been released, pressing forward upon all the inspired truths of the seer-word.
Mantra 26
पवमानास आशवः शुभ्रा असृग्रमिन्दवः । घ्नन्तो विश्वा अप द्विषः ॥
The purifying, swift, radiant drops have streamed forth, striking away all hatreds and hostile forces.
Mantra 27
पवमाना दिवस्पर्यन्तरिक्षादसृक्षत । पृथिव्या अधि सानवि ॥
Purifying, they have been released from around heaven, from the mid-world; they settle upon the ridge of the earth—establishing the descent of light into the embodied field.
Mantra 28
पुनानः सोम धारयेन्दो विश्वा अप स्रिधः । जहि रक्षांसि सुक्रतो ॥
Purifying yourself, O Soma, in the streaming current, O Indu, drive away all crookedness; slay the powers of darkness, O strong in right action.
Mantra 29
अपघ्नन्त्सोम रक्षसोऽभ्यर्ष कनिक्रदत् । द्युमन्तं शुष्ममुत्तमम् ॥
Smiting the darkness-forces, O Soma, surge forth with a cry; bring the most supreme, radiant power of force.
Mantra 30
अस्मे वसूनि धारय सोम दिव्यानि पार्थिवा । इन्दो विश्वानि वार्या ॥
Hold for us the riches, O Soma—those of the heaven and those of the earth; O Indu, sustain in us all desirable plenitudes.
It praises Soma as he is purified through the filter and asks him to bring prosperity (rayi), strength (vīrya), and inspired fame or right hearing (śravas) to the worshippers.
Because these verses are tied to the ritual moment when Soma juice is physically flowing through the pavitra (filter). The outward flow mirrors inner purification and the arrival of divine help.
In these hymns, mada is Soma’s uplifting, energizing ecstasy. It is treated as a sacred power that strengthens the mind and life-force and helps the sacrificer attract the gods’ support.
