RV 7.34 is a Vasiṣṭha hymn that invokes Manīṣā—bright inspired intelligence—as a goddess-power that carries the sacrifice forward like a well-built chariot. The verses move from the consecration of thought and speech into protective radiance that repels hostility and bodily affliction, and end with a broad benediction calling many divine and natural powers to grant peace, shelter, and lasting well-being.
Mantra 1
प्र शुक्रैतु देवी मनीषा अस्मत्सुतष्टो रथो न वाजी ॥
Let the bright goddess, the inspired thought, go forth from us—like a well-fashioned chariot, like a bearer of plenitude of force—carrying the movement of our offering toward the higher fulfilment.
Mantra 2
विदुः पृथिव्या दिवो जनित्रं शृण्वन्त्यापो अध क्षरन्तीः ॥
They have known the birth-place of Earth and Heaven; the Waters listen, and then they flow forth in their streaming—obedient to the truth of that origin.
Mantra 3
आपश्चिदस्मै पिन्वन्त पृथ्वीर्वृत्रेषु शूरा मंसन्त उग्राः ॥
Even the Waters swell the wide foundations for him; in the battles with the Coverers the fierce heroes grow confident—pressing forward the powers that widen the being.
Mantra 4
आ धूर्ष्वस्मै दधाताश्वानिन्द्रो न वज्री हिरण्यबाहुः ॥
Set for him the conquering powers—like Indra the bearer of the thunder-force, the golden-armed—bestow the steeds of energy that carry the work forward.
Mantra 5
अभि प्र स्थाताहेव यज्ञं यातेव पत्मन्त्मना हिनोत ॥
Advance upon the sacrifice as with the day’s uprising; go like a traveler on the path—by your own self-impulsion drive the offering forward.
Mantra 6
त्मना समत्सु हिनोत यज्ञं दधात केतुं जनाय वीरम् ॥
By the self’s power, in the clash, drive the sacrifice onward; establish for the people a banner of perception, a hero-force that can lead.
Mantra 7
उदस्य शुष्माद्भानुर्नार्त बिभर्ति भारं पृथिवी न भूम ॥
Out of his impetuous force a radiance rises, unoppressed; it bears the burden like the Earth, the vast foundation—holding steadily what must be carried for the work.
Mantra 8
ह्वयामि देवाँ अयातुरग्ने साधन्नृतेन धियं दधामि ॥
I call the gods, O Agni, free from crookedness; accomplishing by Ṛta, I set my thought in place—so the will may be straight and effective.
Mantra 9
अभि वो देवीं धियं दधिध्वं प्र वो देवत्रा वाचं कृणुध्वम् ॥
Take into yourselves the divine Thought; shape forth your speech toward the gods—so the word becomes a channel of luminous power.
Mantra 10
आ चष्ट आसां पाथो नदीनां वरुण उग्रः सहस्रचक्षाः ॥
Varuṇa, fierce in guardianship, thousand-eyed, beholds the pathways of these rivers—he watches the courses of the flowing powers in the world and in us.
Mantra 11
राजा राष्ट्रानां पेशो नदीनामनुत्तमस्मै क्षत्रं विश्वायु ॥
King of the realms, shaping the rivers’ pattern, may there be for him unsurpassed sovereign power—world-extending in life—so the right order is upheld in all domains.
Mantra 12
अविष्टो अस्मान्विश्वासु विक्ष्वद्युं कृणोत शंसं निनित्सोः ॥
When we are assailed, make us victorious in all the clans; shape for the one who seeks to proclaim (the Truth) a radiant utterance of inspired praise.
Mantra 13
व्येतु दिद्युद्द्विषामशेवा युयोत विष्वग्रपस्तनूनाम् ॥
Let the flashing radiance spread out against the haters; drive away on every side the affliction that clings to our embodied being.
Mantra 14
अवीन्नो अग्निर्हव्यान्नमोभिः प्रेष्ठो अस्मा अधायि स्तोमः ॥
Agni has protected us by our offerings and acts of reverence; to him, the dearest, our hymn of affirmation has been set in place.
Mantra 15
सजूर्देवेभिरपां नपातं सखायं कृध्वं शिवो नो अस्तु ॥
In harmony with the gods, make Apām Napāt our companion; may he be benignant and bliss-giving to us.
Mantra 16
अब्जामुक्थैरहिं गृणीषे बुध्ने नदीनां रजस्सु षीदन् ॥
With hymns I affirm the Serpent of the Waters, seated in the depth of the rivers, abiding in the spaces of the worlds.
Mantra 17
मा नोऽहिर्बुध्न्यो रिषे धान्मा यज्ञो अस्य स्रिधदृतायोः ॥
Let not Ahi Budhnya harm us; let not our sacrifice for him fall away from the two powers of Truth (right law and truth-being).
Mantra 18
उत न एषु नृषु श्रवो धुः प्र राये यन्तु शर्धन्तो अर्यः ॥
And among these men, may they set our fame; may the striving hosts of the noble ones advance for our plenitude of being.
Mantra 19
तपन्ति शत्रुं स्वर्ण भूमा महासेनासो अमेभिरेषाम् ॥
They scorch the enemy like a blazing light from heaven; these great hosts prevail by their irresistible powers.
Mantra 20
आ यन्नः पत्नीर्गमन्त्यच्छा त्वष्टा सुपाणिर्दधातु वीरान् ॥
When our consorts come toward us, may Tvaṣṭṛ of good workmanship set within us heroes—strong powers of the soul for the journey.
Mantra 21
प्रति नः स्तोमं त्वष्टा जुषेत स्यादस्मे अरमतिर्वसूयुः ॥
May Tvaṣṭṛ accept our hymn of praise; may there be in us Aramati—right-mindedness that desires the true riches.
Mantra 22
ता नो रासन्रातिषाचो वसून्या रोदसी वरुणानी शृणोतु । वरूत्रीभिः सुशरणो नो अस्तु त्वष्टा सुदत्रो वि दधातु रायः ॥
May those Powers that move with the giving bring to us the riches of being; may Varuṇānī, the wide two worlds, hear our call. With her protections may there be for us a happy refuge; may Tvaṣṭṛ, the good giver, apportion and set in us the plenitude (rāyas).
Mantra 23
तन्नो रायः पर्वतास्तन्न आपस्तद्रातिषाच ओषधीरुत द्यौः । वनस्पतिभिः पृथिवी सजोषा उभे रोदसी परि पासतो नः ॥
May the mountains bring to us that plenitude; may the waters bring it; may the powers that go with giving, and the plants, and Heaven too. May Earth, in one accord with the lords of the forest, and both the worlds encompass us on every side with their guarding.
Mantra 24
अनु तदुर्वी रोदसी जिहातामनु द्युक्षो वरुण इन्द्रसखा । अनु विश्वे मरुतो ये सहासो रायः स्याम धरुणं धियध्यै ॥
In accord with that, may the wide two worlds yield and open; in accord may Varuṇa follow, he who shines and is the comrade of Indra. In accord may all the Maruts, the mighty ones, move with us—so that we may become possessors of plenitude, a sure foundation for the growing of the thought.
Mantra 25
तन्न इन्द्रो वरुणो मित्रो अग्निराप ओषधीर्वनिनो जुषन्त । शर्मन्त्स्याम मरुतामुपस्थे यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥
May Indra and Varuṇa, Mitra and Agni, the Waters, the Plants, and the Forest-powers take delight in this for us. May we dwell in peace in the lap of the Maruts; you Powers, guard us always with your harmonies of well-being.
Manīṣā is the divine power of inspired thought—clear intelligence that becomes effective speech and prayer. The hymn treats her like a goddess who can be invoked to guide the sacrifice.
It asks for right inspiration at the start of worship and for protection against hostility and affliction. It concludes by requesting peace and lasting well-being (svasti) from many divine powers.
The closing verse widens the blessing to include the full sacred ecology—major gods (Indra, Varuṇa, Mitra, Agni) and life-supporting powers (waters, herbs, forests). This expresses a complete request for shelter, health, and harmony for the community.
