RV 6.44 is a vigorous Indra-hymn in which the Bharadvāja seer offers the freshly pressed Soma as Indra’s supreme exhilarant, praising him as king of the sacrifice and giver of wealth, victory, and radiant power. The hymn repeatedly links Soma’s “madhu/mada” (rapture) with Indra’s world-sustaining feats—opening paths, empowering the chariot, and establishing the cosmic order that supports Heaven and Earth.

Mantra 1

यो रयिवो रयिंतमो यो द्युम्नैर्द्युम्नवत्तमः । सोमः सुतः स इन्द्र तेऽस्ति स्वधापते मदः ॥

That pressed Soma—most rich in the powers of plenitude, most luminous with lights—this is for thee, O Indra, lord of the soul’s own law (svadhā), a rapture and intoxication of force.

Mantra 2

यः शग्मस्तुविशग्म ते रायो दामा मतीनाम् । सोमः सुतः स इन्द्र तेऽस्ति स्वधापते मदः ॥

That pressed Soma—strong and vehemently strong—becomes for thee, O Indra, the giver and binder of plenitudes for our thoughts; it is thy rapture, O lord of svadhā.

Mantra 3

येन वृद्धो न शवसा तुरो न स्वाभिरूतिभिः । सोमः सुतः स इन्द्र तेऽस्ति स्वधापते मदः ॥

By which thou growest as if increased in might, as if swift with thine own helps—this pressed Soma is for thee, O Indra, a rapture, O lord of the soul’s self-law.

Mantra 4

त्यमु वो अप्रहणं गृणीषे शवसस्पतिम् । इन्द्रं विश्वासाहं नरं मंहिष्ठं विश्वचर्षणिम् ॥

Him I hymn for you—Indra, the unassailable, the lord of force; the all-conquering hero, most bountiful, who presses forward in all human kindreds.

Mantra 5

यं वर्धयन्तीद्गिरः पतिं तुरस्य राधसः । तमिन्न्वस्य रोदसी देवी शुष्मं सपर्यतः ॥

Him whom the hymns increase—the lord of the impetuous giving—him indeed the two divine Worlds adore, serving his burning energy of force.

Mantra 6

तद्व उक्थस्य बर्हणेन्द्रायोपस्तृणीषणि । विपो न यस्योतयो वि यद्रोहन्ति सक्षितः ॥

Therefore spread out for Indra the strongening seat of the hymn; for his helps rise and branch out like inspired seers in their settled mastery.

अविदद्दक्षं मित्रो नवीयान्पपानो देवेभ्यो वस्यो अचैत् । ससवान्त्स्तौलाभिर्धौतरीभिरुरुष्या पायुरभवत्सखिभ्यः ॥

He found the right skill and discernment, like Mitra ever-new; drinking, he perceived what is better for the gods. Winning with firm and purified means, he became a wide protection, a guardian for his comrades.

Mantra 8

ऋतस्य पथि वेधा अपायि श्रिये मनांसि देवासो अक्रन् । दधानो नाम महो वचोभिर्वपुर्दृशये वेन्यो व्यावः ॥

On the path of Ṛta the wise disposer has advanced; the gods fashioned the minds for the splendour. Bearing the Name of the Vast through the word, the desirable One opened out his form for vision.

Mantra 9

द्युमत्तमं दक्षं धेह्यस्मे सेधा जनानां पूर्वीररातीः । वर्षीयो वयः कृणुहि शचीभिर्धनस्य सातावस्माँ अविड्ढि ॥

Set in us the most luminous discernment; repel the ancient hostilities of men. Make our vital being more abounding by thy powers of skill, and in the winning of plenitude, strike through and secure us.

Mantra 10

इन्द्र तुभ्यमिन्मघवन्नभूम वयं दात्रे हरिवो मा वि वेनः । नकिरापिर्ददृशे मर्त्यत्रा किमङ्ग रध्रचोदनं त्वाहुः ॥

Indra, to thee alone, O bounteous one, we have become givers; O lord of the tawny steeds, do not estrange us. No limit or boundary is seen of thee in the mortal field—why then do they call thee a mover of the crippled?

Mantra 11

मा जस्वने वृषभ नो ररीथा मा ते रेवतः सख्ये रिषाम । पूर्वीष्ट इन्द्र निष्षिधो जनेषु जह्यसुष्वीन्प्र वृहापृणतः ॥

O Bull of the soul’s force (Indra), do not harm us in our exultant surge; let us not be diminished in the friendship of your plenitude. Many are your ancient restraints set among men—strike down the un-pressers (those who refuse the Soma of delight), and drive away those who are not filled (who remain empty of the divine fullness).

Mantra 12

उदभ्राणीव स्तनयन्नियर्तीन्द्रो राधांस्यश्व्यानि गव्या । त्वमसि प्रदिवः कारुधाया मा त्वादामान आ दभन्मघोनः ॥

Thundering like a rising cloud, Indra sets in motion the bounties—powers of the horse and the cow, energies of swift force and rays of knowledge. You are the upholder of the singer’s work from the farther heaven; let not the ungiving diminish you, O bounteous one, by their assault.

Mantra 13

अध्वर्यो वीर प्र महे सुतानामिन्द्राय भर स ह्यस्य राजा । यः पूर्व्याभिरुत नूतनाभिर्गीर्भिर्वावृधे गृणतामृषीणाम् ॥

O Adhvaryu, strong one, bring forward the great pressed Soma for Indra, for he is the king of this offering. He who is increased by the ancient and the ever-new hymns, by the utterances of the seers who praise.

Mantra 14

अस्य मदे पुरु वर्पांसि विद्वानिन्द्रो वृत्राण्यप्रती जघान । तमु प्र होषि मधुमन्तमस्मै सोमं वीराय शिप्रिणे पिबध्यै ॥

In this ecstasy he, knowing many forms of power, Indra struck down the resistless obstructions. Bring forth for him the honeyed Soma, that the Hero, the Shining-lipped one, may drink and take up the delight.

Mantra 15

पाता सुतमिन्द्रो अस्तु सोमं हन्ता वृत्रं वज्रेण मन्दसानः । गन्ता यज्ञं परावतश्चिदच्छा वसुर्धीनामविता कारुधायाः ॥

Let Indra be the drinker of the pressed Soma; let him be the slayer of the obstruction with the thunderbolt, rejoicing in the ecstasy. Let him come to the sacrifice even from the farthest distances—he, the rich one of the inspired thoughts, the protector of the singer’s work.

Mantra 16

इदं त्यत्पात्रमिन्द्रपानमिन्द्रस्य प्रियममृतमपायि । मत्सद्यथा सौमनसाय देवं व्यस्मद्द्वेषो युयवद्व्यंहः ॥

This cup, meant for Indra’s drinking, Indra’s beloved immortality, has been drunk. Let it intoxicate him for a gladness of mind toward the divine; and let it drive away from us hatred, drive away distress and sin.

Mantra 17

एना मन्दानो जहि शूर शत्रूञ्जामिमजामिं मघवन्नमित्रान् । अभिषेणाँ अभ्यादेदिशानान्पराच इन्द्र प्र मृणा जही च ॥

With this (Soma), exulting, strike down, O hero, the enemies—kinsman and non-kinsman, O bounteous one, the unfriendly. Those who come against us in bands, rushing upon us from every side—drive them back, O Indra; crush them down and smite again.

Mantra 18

आसु ष्मा णो मघवन्निन्द्र पृत्स्वस्मभ्यं महि वरिवः सुगं कः । अपां तोकस्य तनयस्य जेष इन्द्र सूरीन्कृणुहि स्मा नो अर्धम् ॥

Now, O bounteous Indra, in the battles make for us a vast wide space, an easy path. For the winning of waters, of the child and the offspring, O Indra, make us possessors of luminous mastery; make us indeed your portion.

Mantra 19

आ त्वा हरयो वृषणो युजाना वृषरथासो वृषरश्मयोऽत्याः । अस्मत्राञ्चो वृषणो वज्रवाहो वृष्णे मदाय सुयुजो वहन्तु ॥

Let your tawny steeds, yoked in their might—bull-charioted, bull-reined—bring you hither toward us; those bull-powers that bear the thunderbolt, well-yoked, to your ecstasy, O Bull of the soul-force.

Mantra 20

आ ते वृषन्वृषणो द्रोणमस्थुर्घृतप्रुषो नोर्मयो मदन्तः । इन्द्र प्र तुभ्यं वृषभिः सुतानां वृष्णे भरन्ति वृषभाय सोमम् ॥

For you, O Bull, the mighty streams have taken their place in the trough, like waves that drip with ghee, exulting. O Indra, for you they bring forward, with the strong pressings, the Soma—Soma for the Bull, for the master of the force.

Mantra 21

वृषासि दिवो वृषभः पृथिव्या वृषा सिन्धूनां वृषभः स्तियानाम् । वृष्णे त इन्दुर्वृषभ पीपाय स्वादू रसो मधुपेयो वराय ॥

Thou art the Bull-force of heaven, the Bull of the earth; the Bull of the streams and the strong lord of the firm stations. For thee, O bull-power, the Soma-drop swells—sweet is the essence, honey-drink for the chooser of the supreme.

Mantra 22

अयं देवः सहसा जायमान इन्द्रेण युजा पणिमस्तभायत् । अयं स्वस्य पितुरायुधानीन्दुरमुष्णादशिवस्य मायाः ॥

This god, born by force, with Indra as his yoke-fellow, struck down the Paṇi. This Indu stole back the weapons of his own Father from the unbenign one’s deceits.

Mantra 23

अयमकृणोदुषसः सुपत्नीरयं सूर्ये अदधाज्ज्योतिरन्तः । अयं त्रिधातु दिवि रोचनेषु त्रितेषु विन्ददमृतं निगूळ्हम् ॥

This power made the Dawns good-mated; this set the Light within the Sun. This established the triple foundation in the luminous heavens; in the realms of Trita it found the hidden immortality.

Mantra 24

अयं द्यावापृथिवी वि ष्कभायदयं रथमयुनक्सप्तरश्मिम् । अयं गोषु शच्या पक्वमन्तः सोमो दाधार दशयन्त्रमुत्सम् ॥

This power propped apart Heaven-and-Earth; this yoked the chariot with seven reins. This, by the master-skill, ripened within the Cows; Soma held the spring with tenfold instruments.

Frequently Asked Questions
