Mantra 1

अध्यात्मम्। (४४ चतुष्पदा पुरःशाक्वरा भुरिक्; ४५ अतिजागतगर्भा)। उदस्य केतवो दिवि शुक्रा भ्राजन्त ईरते । आदित्यस्य नृचक्षसा महिव्रतस्य मीढुषः

Up rise his radiant tokens in the heaven; bright they blaze and are set in motion,—of Āditya, the man-beholding, of him of mighty ordinance, the bounteous giver.

Mantra 2

दिशां प्रज्ञानां स्वरयन्तमर्चिषा सुपक्षमाशुं पतयन्तमर्णवे। स्तवाम सूर्यं भुवनस्य गोपां यो रश्मिभिर्दिश आभाति सर्वाः

Him of the quarters, of the wise discerners, resounding with his splendour—well-winged, swift, flying in the flood—Sūrya we laud, the guardian of the world, who with his rays illumineth all the directions.

Mantra 3

यत् प्राङ् प्रत्यङ् स्वधया यासि शीभं नानारूपे अहनी कर्षि मायया । तदादित्य महि तत् ते महि श्रवो यदेको विश्वं परि भूम जायसे

That thou, now eastward, now again westward, by thine own might goest swiftly, and by wondrous power drawest on the Day and Night of many forms—this, O Āditya, is great; great is thy glory, in that thou, alone, art born encompassing the whole earth.

Mantra 4

विपश्चितं तरणिं भ्राजमानं वहन्ति यं हरितः सप्त बह्वीः । स्रुताद् यमत्त्रिर्दिवमुन्निनाय तं त्वा पश्यन्ति परियान्तमाजिम्

The wise, the deliverer, the shining one—him the tawny steeds, seven and many, bear along. Him whom Atri from the stream raised up unto heaven, thee do men behold as thou goest circling on thy course.

Mantra 5

मा त्वा दभन् परियान्तमाजिं स्वस्ति दुर्गां अति याहि शीभम्। दिवं च सूर्य पृथिवीं च देवी महोरात्रे विमिमानो यदेषि

Let none assail thee as thou goest circling on thy course: in welfare pass beyond the perilous strait, swiftly. Heaven and Earth, O Sūrya—(thou) divine—measuring out the great Day and Night, when thou goest.

Mantra 6

स्वस्ति ते सूर्य चरसे रथाय येनोभावन्तौ परियासि सद्यः । यं ते वहन्ति हरितो वहिष्ठाः शतमश्वा यदि वा सप्त बह्वीः

Welfare be to thee, O Sūrya, for thy going, for thy chariot whereby thou straightway encompassest both the ends. That which the tawny, best-bearing ones convey for thee—be it hundred-horsed, or seven, or many.

सुखं सूर्य रथमंशुमन्तं स्योनं सुवह्निमधि तिष्ठ वाजिनम्। यं ते वहन्ति हरितो वहिष्ठाः शतमश्वा यदि वा सप्त बह्वीः

Mount thou, O Sūrya, the radiant chariot, pleasant and kindly, easy to be borne, the swift prize-winner;—that which thy tawny steeds, best of bearers, convey for thee, whether a hundred horses, or seven, or many.

Mantra 8

सप्त सूर्यो हरितो यातवे रथे हिरण्यत्वचसो बृहतीरयुक्त । अमोचि शुक्रो रजसः परस्ताद् विधूय देवस्तमो दिवमारुहत्

Seven tawny mares, golden-skinned, great, did Sūrya yoke upon the chariot for his going. Released, the bright god from beyond the dusky region, shaking off the darkness, mounted up to heaven.

Mantra 9

उत् केतुना बृहता देव आगन्नपावृक् तमोऽभि ज्योतिरश्रैत्। दिव्यः सुपर्णः स वीरो व्यऽख्यददितेः पुत्रो भुवनानि विश्वा

Forth with his mighty signal came the god, uncovering: upon the darkness the light pressed on. The heavenly fair-winged, that hero, made manifest—all worlds—Aditi’s son.

Mantra 10

उद्यन् रश्मीना तनुषे विश्वा रुपाणि पुष्यसि । उभा समुद्रौ क्रतुना वि भासि सर्वांल्लोकान् परिभूर्भ्राजमानः

Rising, with thy rays thou stretchest forth; all forms thou makest to prosper. Over both the oceans by thy purpose thou shinest abroad, blazing, encompassing all worlds.

Mantra 11

पूर्वापरं चरतो माययैतौ शिशू क्रीडन्तौ परि यातोऽर्णवम्। विश्वान्यो भुवना विचष्टे हैरण्यैरन्यं हरितो वहन्ति

Eastward and westward move these twain by wondrous power, two children playing, who go about the ocean. The one surveys all worlds; the other the tawny mares bear with golden gear.

Mantra 12

दिवि त्वात्त्रिरधारयत् सूर्या मासाय कर्तवे । स एषि सुधृतस्तपन् विश्वा भूतावचाकशत्

In heaven they set thee fast, O Sūrya, thrice over, to make the month its course. Thou goest, firmly stayed, burning; thou hast made all beings visible below.

Mantra 13

उभावन्तौ समर्षसि वत्सः संमातराविव । नन्वे३तदितः पुरा ब्रह्म देवा अमी विदुः

To both the helping ones thou runnest together, like a calf unto its two mothers. Surely this sacred lore from hence of old those very Gods have known.

Mantra 14

यत् समुद्रमनु श्रितं तत् सिषासति सूर्यः । अध्वास्य विततो महान् पूर्वश्चापरश्च यः

What rests along upon the Ocean—unto that the Sun would fain attain. Vast is his pathway, stretched abroad, both eastern and again the western one.

Mantra 15

तं समाप्नोति जूतिभिस्ततो नाप चिकित्सति । तेनामृतस्य भक्षं देवानां नाव रुन्धते

Him he attains with swift impulsions; thereafter he wavereth not at all. Thereby he hindereth not the Gods’ appointed portion of immortality for their enjoyment.

Mantra 16

उदु त्यं जातवेदसं देवं वहन्ति केतवः । दृशे विश्वाय सूर्यम्

Up, yea, that Jātavedas God the radiant banners bear aloft—the Sun—for sight, for all the world to see.

Mantra 17

अप त्ये तायवो यथा नक्षत्रा यन्त्यक्तुभिः । सूराय विश्वचक्षसे

Away—like yonder thieves—as the stars depart with the nights: (away) for Sūrya, the All-seeing.

Mantra 18

अदृश्रन्नस्य केतवो वि रश्मयो जनाँ अनु । भ्राजन्तो अग्नयो यथा

Seen are his bright tokens; his rays spread forth along the people, shining like fires ablaze.

Mantra 19

तरणिर्विश्वदर्शतो ज्योतिष्कृदसि सूर्य । विश्वमा भासि रोचन

A crosser art thou, all-seeing; a maker of light, O Sūrya: over all thou shinest, O Radiant One.

Mantra 20

प्रत्यङ् देवानां विशः प्रत्यङ्ङुदेषि मानुषीः । प्रत्यङ् विश्वं स्वर्दृशे

Facing hither to the clans of gods, facing hither thou risest to the clans of men; facing hither (to) the whole, O sky-seeing One.

Mantra 21

येना पावक चक्षसा भुरण्यन्तं जनाँ अनु । त्वं वरुण पश्यसि

With that purifying eye wherewith, following after the roving people, thou seest, O Varuṇa.

Mantra 22

वि द्यामेषि रजस्पृथ्वहर्मिमानो अक्तुभिः । पश्यन् जन्मानि सूर्य

Forth through the heaven thou goest, through the broad mid-air, meting out the day by nights; beholding births, O Sūrya.

Mantra 23

सप्त त्वा हरितो रथे वहन्ति देव सूर्य । शोचिष्केशं विचक्षणम्

Seven tawny steeds upon thy car bear thee, O god Sūrya—flame-maned, keen of sight.

Mantra 24

अयुक्त सप्त शुन्ध्युवः सूरो रथस्य नप्त्यः । ताभिर्याति स्वयुक्तिभिः

The Sun hath yoked the seven purifying ones, the chariot’s maidens; with them he goeth, by powers self-harnessed.

Mantra 25

रोहितो दिवमारुहत् तपसा तपस्वी। स योनिमैति स उ जायते पुनः स देवानामधिपतिर्बभूव

Rohita, ardent with heat, hath climbed to heaven by tapas. He goeth to the womb; verily he is born again: he hath become the Overlord of the gods.

Mantra 26

यो विश्वचर्षणिरुत विश्वतोमुखो यो विश्वतस्पाणिरुत विश्वतस्पृथः । सं बाहुभ्यां भरति सं पतत्रैर्द्यावापृथिवी जनयन् देव एकः

He who is of all peoples, and hath faces on every side; he who hath hands on every side, and is broad on every side—he beareth all together with his arms, all together with his wings, generating Heaven and Earth, the one God.

Mantra 27

एकपाद् द्विपदो भूयो वि चक्रमे द्विपात् त्रिपादमभ्येऽति पश्चात्। द्विपाद्ध षट्पदो भूयो वि चक्रमे त एकपदस्तन्वं१ समासते

One-footed, he strode forth again as two-footed; from the two-footed he overtakes, thereafter, the three-footed. From the two-footed, indeed, he strode forth again as six-footed: those one-footed forms settle together into one body.

Mantra 28

अतन्द्रो यास्यन् हरितो यदास्थाद् द्वे रूपे कृणुते रोचमानः । केतुमानुद्यन्त्सहमानो रजांसि विश्वा आदित्य प्रवतो वि भासि

Unwearied, when he goeth and hath mounted the bay steeds, shining he maketh for himself two forms. Bannered, rising, overpowering all the regions, O Āditya, thou beamest forth along every slope and course.

Mantra 29

बण्महां असि सूर्य बडादित्य महां असि । महांस्ते महतो महिमा त्वमादित्य महां असि

Verily thou art great, O Sūrya; verily, O Āditya, thou art great. Great is thy greatness of the Great: thou, O Āditya, art great.

Mantra 30

रोचसे दिवि रोचसे अन्तरिक्षे पतङ्ग पृथिव्यां रोचसे रोचसे अप्स्व१न्तः । उभा समुद्रौ रुच्या व्याऽपिथ देवो देवासि महिषः स्वर्जित्

Thou shinest in heaven, thou shinest in the mid-air; O Patanga, on earth thou shinest; thou shinest within the waters. With radiance thou hast filled both oceans: a god thou art, yea god; the mighty one, the heaven-winning.

Mantra 31

अर्वाङ् परस्तात् प्रयतो व्यध्व आशुर्विपश्चित् पतयन् पतङ्गः । विष्णुर्विचित्तः शवसाधितिष्ठन् प्र केतुना सहते विश्वमेजत्

Hitherward from beyond, impelled along the paths, swift and wise, flying—the Patanga. Viṣṇu, of manifold appearance, presiding with might, with his ray-banner overcometh all that stirreth and moveth.

Mantra 32

चित्रश्चिकित्वान् महिषः सुपर्ण आरोचयन् रोदसी अन्तरिक्षम्। अहोरात्रे परि सूर्यं वसाने प्रास्य विश्वा तिरतो वीर्याऽणि

Bright, wise, the mighty Bull, the fair-winged, making Heaven and Earth to shine, and the mid-air. Day and Night, as garments round the Sun, he putteth on; casting forth all his heroic powers, he passeth over (all).

Mantra 33

तिग्मो विभ्राजन् तन्वं१ शिशानोऽरंगमासः प्रवतो रराणः । ज्योतिष्मान् पक्षी महिषो वयोधा विश्वा आस्थात् प्रदिशः कल्पमानः

Keen, widely shining, whetting his own form, swift-going, rejoicing in the courses; the light-possessing winged mighty one, bestower of life, hath taken his stand in all the quarters, setting them in order.

Mantra 34

चित्रं देवानां केतुरनीकं ज्योतिष्मान् प्रदिशः सूर्य उद्यन्। दिवाकरोऽति द्युम्नैस्तमांसि विश्वातारीद् दुरितानि शुक्रः

Wondrous, the gods’ bright signal, the luminous face—Sun, arising, (illumining) the quarters. The maker of day, with splendors, hath passed beyond the darknesses; the bright one hath carried us over all evils.

Mantra 35

चित्रं देवानामुदगादनीकं चक्षुर्मित्रस्य वरुणस्याग्नेः । आप्राद् द्यावापृथिवी अन्तरिक्षं सूर्य आत्मा जगतस्तस्थुषश्च

The wondrous face of the gods hath risen up—the eye of Mitra, Varuṇa, and Agni. He hath filled Heaven and Earth and the mid-air: the Sun, the very self of what moveth and what standeth.

Mantra 36

उच्चा पतन्तमरुणं सुपर्णं मध्ये दिवस्तरणिं भ्राजमानम्। पश्याम त्वा सवितारं यमाहुरजस्रं ज्योतिर्यदविन्ददत्त्रिः

Aloft, flying, ruddy, fair-winged, in mid-heaven the shining Crosser—may I behold thee, Savitar, whom men call the unceasing Light, which Dattri found.

Mantra 37

दिवस्पृष्ठे धावमानं सुपर्णमदित्याः पुत्रं नाथकाम उप यामि भीतः । स नः सूर्य प्र तिर दीर्घमायुर्मा रिषाम सुमतौ ते स्याम

On heaven’s back I seek, in fear, the swift-flying fair-wing, Aditi’s son, desiring a guardian. Do thou, O Sun, bear forth for us long life; let us not suffer harm: may we be in thy gracious favour.

Mantra 38

सहस्राह्ण्यं वियतावस्य पक्षौ हरेर्हंसस्य पततः स्वर्गम्। स देवान्त्सर्वानुरस्युपदद्य संपश्यन् याति भुवनानि विश्वा

A thousand-day-long are his two wings in the wide expanse, of the tawny Haṃsa flying unto heaven. He, drawing near in due course to all the Gods, goes on, beholding, through all the worlds.

Mantra 39

रोहितः कालो अभवद् रोहितोऽग्रे प्रजापतिः । रोहितो यज्ञानां मुखं रोहितः स्व१राभरत्

Rohita became Time; Rohita was, in the beginning, Prajāpati. Rohita is the mouth of sacrifices; Rohita brought heaven hither.

Mantra 40

रोहितो लोको अभवद् रोहितोऽत्यतपद् दिवम्। रोहितो रश्मिभिर्भूमिं समुद्रमनु सं चरत्

Rohita became the world; Rohita heated, yea, over-heated heaven. Rohita with his rays traversed the earth, and along the ocean moved in full course.

Mantra 41

सर्वा दिशः समचरद् रोहितोऽधिपतिर्दिवः । दिवं समुद्रमाद् भूमिं सर्वं भूतं वि रक्षति

Through all the quarters Rohita moved, the overlord of heaven. Heaven, ocean, and earth—yea, all that is—he guards abroad on every side.

Mantra 42

आरोहन्छुक्रो बृहतीरतन्द्रो द्वे रूपे कृणुते रोचमानः । चित्रश्चिकित्वान् महिषो वातमाया यावतो लोकानभि यद् विभाति

Ascending, bright, unwearied, he traverseth the mighty regions; shining, he assumeth twofold forms. Wondrous, discerning, the mighty Bull, whose magic is as wind, he shineth forth over whatsoever worlds there be, making them manifest.

Mantra 43

अभ्य१न्यदेति पर्यन्यदस्यतेऽहोरात्राभ्यां महिषः कल्पमानः । सूर्यं वयं रजसि क्षियन्तं गातुविदं हवामहे नाधमानाः

Toward one side he goeth; round the other he is hurled abroad; the mighty Bull, disposing himself by day and night. The Sun, abiding in the airy realm, the Knower of paths, we needy suppliants call upon.

Mantra 44

पृथिवीप्रो महिषो नाधमानस्य गातुरदब्धचक्षुः परि विश्वं बभूव । विश्वं संपश्यन्त्सुविदत्रो यजत्र इदं शृणोतु यदहं ब्रवीमि

Earth-pervading, the mighty Bull is the needy man’s way; with eye unbaffled he hath encompassed all. Beholding all, the good bestower, worship-worthy—let him hear this which I speak.

Mantra 45

पर्यस्य महिमा पृथिवीं समुद्रं ज्योतिषा विभ्राजन् परि द्यामन्तरिक्षम्। सर्वं संपश्यन्त्सुविदत्रो यजत्र इदं शृणोतु यदहं ब्रवीमि

Round him is majesty: with light he shineth over earth and ocean, over heaven and the mid-air. Beholding all, the good bestower, worship-worthy—let him hear this which I speak.

Mantra 46

अबोध्यग्निः समिधा जनानां प्रति धेनुमिवायतीमुषासम्। यह्वा इव प्र वयामुज्जिहानाः प्र भानवः सिस्रते नाकमच्छ

Awakened is Agni by the kindling of men, to meet the Dawn that cometh on like a milch-cow. Like eager birds, uplifting tongues, his beams stream forth, onward toward heaven.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is used to protect and heal by driving away harms that move in secrecy—night-linked illness, hostile influence, fear, and even theft—through Sūrya’s all-seeing light.

Because the hymn treats sunlight as a cosmic surveillance power: what is hidden in darkness is exposed, so threats cannot remain concealed or effective.
