Frequently Asked Questions

Dakṣiṇā is the ritual gift/fee personified as a power that sustains sacrifice and social order. In AV 10.5 she is asked to circulate back to the performer like the Sun’s dependable course.

Primarily it is paustika—meant to secure wealth and brahmanic prestige. But it also contains strong protective and rival-expulsion elements (sapatnahana/abhicārika), aimed at removing obstacles to that prosperity.

It is a ritual way of ‘investing’ a person with radiance, strength, life-breath, and longevity. The wording suggests an envelopment act (veṣṭana), often performed with a cloth or cord as a symbolic carrier of the blessing.
