अयं सूक्तः इन्द्राय सोमस्य आह्वानगीतम्। कविः तम् शीघ्रम् आगन्तुं द्वाभ्यां हरिभ्याम् अश्वाभ्यां सह आह्वयति, नवप्रसुतं सोमं पातुं च। पुनः पुनः इन्द्रं उदरान्तः सोमं निधातुं तेन बलवत्तरं भवितुं च प्रेरयति, यथा सः आह्वयन्तं कुशिक–विश्वामित्रवंशं प्रति रक्षां बलं जयम् च दद्यात्।
Mantra 1
उप नः सुतमा गहि सोममिन्द्र गवाशिरम् । हरिभ्यां यस्ते अस्मयुः ॥
उप नः आगहि; हे इन्द्र, गवाशिरं सुतं सोमम् उपागहि। हरिभ्यां सह आगहि, यतः त्वम् अस्माकम् आहुतिं च आशां च अन्वेषि।

तमिन्द्र मदमा गहि बर्हिःष्ठां ग्रावभिः सुतम् । कुविन्न्वस्य तृप्णवः ॥
हे इन्द्र, तं मदम् आगहि; ग्रावभिः सुतं बर्हिषि-स्थं सोमम् उपागहि। किम् नु अस्य तृप्णवः—किम् नु ते तृष्णा अनेन तृप्येत?

त्वां सुतस्य पीतये प्रत्नमिन्द्र हवामहे । कुशिकासो अवस्यवः ॥
त्वां सुतस्य पीतये प्रत्नम् इन्द्र हवामहे; कुशिकासोऽवस्यवः, तव पालन-सान्निध्यम् अभिकाङ्क्षमाणाः।
It is an invitation to Indra to come to the sacrifice and drink the freshly pressed Soma, so he may become strong and help the worshippers with protection and victory.
The “haris” are Indra’s two bay horses (or swift steeds). Mentioning them emphasizes Indra’s rapid arrival to the offering when he is invoked.
They are the seer’s lineage/community associated with Viśvāmitra. By naming themselves, they mark the hymn as a family invocation asking Indra for aid.
