Sukta 42

Mantra 1

उप नः सुतमा गहि सोममिन्द्र गवाशिरम् । हरिभ्यां यस्ते अस्मयुः ॥

Come near to us; come to the pressed Soma, O Indra—this Soma strengthened by the cow-force (luminous plenitude). With your two haris, come—since you are the one who seeks our offering and our aspiration.

Mantra 2

तमिन्द्र मदमा गहि बर्हिःष्ठां ग्रावभिः सुतम् । कुविन्न्वस्य तृप्णवः ॥

Come, O Indra, to that ecstasy; to the Soma pressed by the stones, set upon the barhis-seat. Will not your thirst be satisfied by it—will not the seeking in you find its fulfillment here?

Mantra 3

इन्द्रमित्था गिरो ममाच्छागुरिषिता इतः । आवृते सोमपीतये ॥

Thus my words have gone straight to Indra, sent forth from here; returning, may he come for the drinking of Soma—turning back toward this field where the call has been launched.

Mantra 4

इन्द्रं सोमस्य पीतये स्तोमैरिह हवामहे । उक्थेभिः कुविदागमत् ॥

We call Indra here with our soul-affirming hymns, for the drinking of Soma—so that the luminous force may enter and increase within us. May he, moved by our uplifted utterances, indeed come.

Mantra 5

इन्द्र सोमाः सुता इमे तान्दधिष्व शतक्रतो । जठरे वाजिनीवसो ॥

Indra, these Soma-joys are pressed and ready; set them within thy belly, O thou of a hundred powers. O lord of plenitudes, grow strong in the inward holding of this delight.

Mantra 6

विद्मा हि त्वा धनंजयं वाजेषु दधृषं कवे । अधा ते सुम्नमीमहे ॥

For we know thee as the winner of the riches of being, daring in the plenitudes of force, O seer-power. Therefore we seek thy grace—thy happy wideness that establishes our growth.

Mantra 7

इममिन्द्र गवाशिरं यवाशिरं च नः पिब । आगत्या वृषभिः सुतम् ॥

Drink for us, O Indra, this Soma mixed with the cow’s light and with the barley’s sustaining force; come with thy mighty energies and take the pressed delight into thy power.

Mantra 8

तुभ्येदिन्द्र स्व ओक्ये सोमं चोदामि पीतये । एष रारन्तु ते हृदि ॥

For thee alone, O Indra, in thine own home of the being, I impel this Soma for thy drinking. Let this delight take joy and settle in thy heart—so thy power may act from within us.

Mantra 9

त्वां सुतस्य पीतये प्रत्नमिन्द्र हवामहे । कुशिकासो अवस्यवः ॥

Thee, O ancient Indra, we invoke for the drinking of the pressed Soma—we, the Kuśikas, seekers of thy help and protection, aspiring to thy sustaining presence.
