Sukta 39

Mantra 1

अग्निमस्तोष्यृग्मियमग्निमीळा यजध्यै । अग्निर्देवाँ अनक्तु न उभे हि विदथे कविरन्तश्चरति दूत्यं नभन्तामन्यके समे ॥

I have magnified Agni, the seer of the hymn; I adore Agni to be worshipped in the sacrifice. May Agni anoint and set the Gods upon us; for in both assemblies he, the poet, moves within as the messenger—let the opposing powers be driven away into another domain.

Mantra 2

न्यग्ने नव्यसा वचस्तनूषु शंसमेषाम् । न्यराती रराव्णां विश्वा अर्यो अरातीरितो युच्छन्त्वामुरो नभन्तामन्यके समे ॥

O Agni, set within our bodies the fresh-forming word, their true affirmation. Cast down all hostilities of the clamorous darkness; let the noble power drive away these hostilities from here—let the devourers be banished to another realm.

Mantra 3

अग्ने मन्मानि तुभ्यं कं घृतं न जुह्व आसनि । स देवेषु प्र चिकिद्धि त्वं ह्यसि पूर्व्यः शिवो दूतो विवस्वतो नभन्तामन्यके समे ॥

O Agni, to you I pour my thoughts like clarified light; let them be my oblation. Become fully awake among the Gods, for you are the ancient, the benevolent messenger of Vivasvat—let the opposing powers be driven to another plane.

Mantra 4

तत्तदग्निर्वयो दधे यथायथा कृपण्यति । ऊर्जाहुतिर्वसूनां शं च योश्च मयो दधे विश्वस्यै देवहूत्यै नभन्तामन्यके समे ॥

Again and again Agni establishes the plenitude of life according as one aspires with need; an offering of strength for the Vasus, he sets in us peace and well-being and delight for the universal calling of the Gods—let the opposing powers be banished elsewhere.

Mantra 5

स चिकेत सहीयसाग्निश्चित्रेण कर्मणा । स होता शश्वतीनां दक्षिणाभिरभीवृत इनोति च प्रतीव्यं नभन्तामन्यके समे ॥

He knows by a mightier power—Agni by his wondrous working. He is the priest of the everlasting movements; encompassed by the offerings of right-giving, he impels forward the opposing front—let the hostile powers be driven away elsewhere.

Mantra 6

अग्निर्जाता देवानामग्निर्वेद मर्तानामपीच्यम् । अग्निः स द्रविणोदा अग्निर्द्वारा व्यूर्णुते स्वाहुतो नवीयसा नभन्तामन्यके समे ॥

Agni is born among the Gods; Agni knows the hidden within mortals. Agni is the giver of plenitude; Agni opens wide the doors—well-offered with ever-newer force—let the hostile powers be driven away elsewhere.

Mantra 7

अग्निर्देवेषु संवसुः स विक्षु यज्ञियास्वा । स मुदा काव्या पुरु विश्वं भूमेव पुष्यति देवो देवेषु यज्ञियो नभन्तामन्यके समे ॥

Agni is the indwelling good among the Gods; he comes into the clans that are fit for sacrifice. With gladness and the seer’s inspiration he fosters the whole being like a broad earth—God among the Gods, the sacrificial power—let the hostile forces be driven away elsewhere.

Mantra 8

यो अग्निः सप्तमानुषः श्रितो विश्वेषु सिन्धुषु । तमागन्म त्रिपस्त्यं मन्धातुर्दस्युहन्तममग्निं यज्ञेषु पूर्व्यं नभन्तामन्यके समे ॥

That Agni who is the sevenfold-human, established in all the streams, to him we have come—the three-homed, of Mandhātṛ, the most slayer of the Dasyu, the ancient Agni in the sacrifices—let the hostile powers be driven away elsewhere.

Mantra 9

अग्निस्त्रीणि त्रिधातून्या क्षेति विदथा कविः । स त्रीँरेकादशाँ इह यक्षच्च पिप्रयच्च नो विप्रो दूतः परिष्कृतो नभन्तामन्यके समे ॥

Agni, the seer, dwells in the threefold foundations and in the ordered gatherings. May he here worship the three and the eleven and also fill and increase us—he, the illumined messenger, perfectly fashioned—let the hostile powers be driven away elsewhere.
