
Sukta 8.26
Aśvinau (Nā́satyā)
This hymn primarily invokes the Aśvinau (Nā́satyā), calling their swift chariot to the sacrificer’s praise and asking for victorious strength, protection, and luminous well-being. It portrays worship as a beautifying, clothing-like act that “wraps” the divine Twins with offerings and service, yielding śubha (radiant auspiciousness). The closing verse turns briefly to Vāyu, seeking mental exhilaration, energetic plenitude (vāja), and the right activation of inspired thoughts in action.
Mantra 1
युवोरु षू रथं हुवे सधस्तुत्याय सूरिषु । अतूर्तदक्षा वृषणा वृषण्वसू ॥
Your chariot I call at once, O Aśvins, for the common hymn of the illumined leaders; you whose power of accomplishment is unbeaten—O strong ones, lords of the abundant force.
Mantra 2
युवं वरो सुषाम्णे महे तने नासत्या । अवोभिर्याथो वृषणा वृषण्वसू ॥
You two are the chosen boons for a perfect harmony, for the great extension of our being, O Nā́satyas; by your helps you come—O strong ones, possessors of vigorous plenitude.
Mantra 3
ता वामद्य हवामहे हव्येभिर्वाजिनीवसू । पूर्वीरिष इषयन्तावति क्षपः ॥
You two we call today with our offerings, O lords of the plenitude of force; you who set in motion the many ancient impulses of nourishment and increase, passing beyond the nights.
Mantra 4
आ वां वाहिष्ठो अश्विना रथो यातु श्रुतो नरा । उप स्तोमान्तुरस्य दर्शथः श्रिये ॥
Let your best bearer-chariot come, O Aśvins, O two heroes, famed for hearing; draw near to the hymns of the eager striver, to manifest for our increase and beauty of being.
Mantra 5
जुहुराणा चिदश्विना मन्येथां वृषण्वसू । युवं हि रुद्रा पर्षथो अति द्विषः ॥
Even when we are wavering, O Aśvins, you take thought of us, O possessors of vigorous plenitude; for you two, O strong ones, carry us across beyond the haters—beyond the hostile movements.
Mantra 6
दस्रा हि विश्वमानुषङ्मक्षूभिः परिदीयथः । धियंजिन्वा मधुवर्णा शुभस्पती ॥
O wondrous doers, for you swiftly range around all the human world; you quicken the thought, honey-hued, lords of luminous beauty and right shaping.
Mantra 7
उप नो यातमश्विना राया विश्वपुषा सह । मघवाना सुवीरावनपच्युता ॥
Come near to us, O Aśvins, with the wealth that nourishes all; O bounteous ones, rich in heroic force, unfailing and not slipping from your help.
Mantra 8
आ मे अस्य प्रतीव्यमिन्द्रनासत्या गतम् । देवा देवेभिरद्य सचनस्तमा ॥
Come to me for this answering encounter, O Indra and Nā́satyas; O gods, with the gods today become most intimately united with us in the shared movement.
Mantra 9
वयं हि वां हवामह उक्षण्यन्तो व्यश्ववत् । सुमतिभिरुप विप्राविहा गतम् ॥
For we indeed call you both, growing in the soul’s virile force and in the plenitude of energies; come here to us, O two illumined ones, drawing near with your happy leadings (right inspirations).
Mantra 10
अश्विना स्वृषे स्तुहि कुवित्ते श्रवतो हवम् । नेदीयसः कूळयातः पणीँरुत ॥
O seer, praise the Aśvins with a free-flowing utterance; perhaps they will hear the call. May they draw nearer, driving away even the Paṇis—those hoarders who obstruct the offerings and the light.
Mantra 11
वैयश्वस्य श्रुतं नरोतो मे अस्य वेदथः । सजोषसा वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमा ॥
O two strong ones, you have heard of Vaiyaśva; and you know this of me. In one concord of will are Varuṇa, Mitra, and Aryaman—powers that uphold the right harmony.
Mantra 12
युवादत्तस्य धिष्ण्या युवानीतस्य सूरिभिः । अहरहर्वृषण मह्यं शिक्षतम् ॥
O lords of the illumined seat, you who give in youth and lead in youth with the shining powers—day by day, O two mighty ones, teach and strengthen me.
Mantra 13
यो वां यज्ञेभिरावृतोऽधिवस्त्रा वधूरिव । सपर्यन्ता शुभे चक्राते अश्विना ॥
He who has wrapped you both with sacrifices, as a bride is clothed with her garments—serving you, he fashions a luminous beauty of being, O Aśvins.
Mantra 14
यो वामुरुव्यचस्तमं चिकेतति नृपाय्यम् । वर्तिरश्विना परि यातमस्मयू ॥
He who perceives your widest-ranging protection for men—O Aśvins, journey around (and encompass) him as a guarding path, for he is yours in aspiration.
Mantra 15
अस्मभ्यं सु वृषण्वसू यातं वर्तिर्नृपाय्यम् । विषुद्रुहेव यज्ञमूहथुर्गिरा ॥
Come to us, O two rich in might, as a protecting circuit for men; and with the word you set the sacrifice in motion, like one who drives away the hostile breaker of harmony.
Mantra 16
वाहिष्ठो वां हवानां स्तोमो दूतो हुवन्नरा । युवाभ्यां भूत्वश्विना ॥
This hymn of invocation, the best carrier, becomes a messenger calling you, O two strong ones; may it be made one with you both, O Aśvins.
Mantra 17
यददो दिवो अर्णव इषो वा मदथो गृहे । श्रुतमिन्मे अमर्त्या ॥
Whether there, in the ocean of heaven, or here in the house of our striving you take delight in the powers of nourishment—yet surely, O immortals, my call has been heard.
Mantra 18
उत स्या श्वेतयावरी वाहिष्ठा वां नदीनाम् । सिन्धुर्हिरण्यवर्तनिः ॥
And that white-moving (stream), the best carrier among the rivers for you two—the Sindhu with her golden pathways—becomes your swift passage of approach.
Mantra 19
स्मदेतया सुकीर्त्याश्विना श्वेतया धिया । वहेथे शुभ्रयावाना ॥
From us, by this luminous and well-famed thought-force, O Aśvins, you who journey in brightness are borne (towards us); come carried by the white clarity of the intelligence.
Mantra 20
युक्ष्वा हि त्वं रथासहा युवस्व पोष्या वसो । आन्नो वायो मधु पिबास्माकं सवना गहि ॥
Yoke (thy steeds), for thou art the master of the chariot’s might; grow young in thy force, O lord of increase. Then, O Vāyu, drink the honeyed delight and come to our pressings.
Mantra 21
तव वायवृतस्पते त्वष्टुर्जामातरद्भुत । अवांस्या वृणीमहे ॥
Thine, O Vāyu, lord of the Truth-Order, wondrous son-in-law of Tvaṣṭṛ—thy helps we choose and take to ourselves.
Mantra 22
त्वष्टुर्जामातरं वयमीशानं राय ईमहे । सुतावन्तो वायुं द्युम्ना जनासः ॥
We, who have the Soma pressed, seek Vāyu—the son-in-law of Tvaṣṭṛ—master of the plenitudes; we humans (aspire) for luminous powers and victorious brightness.
Mantra 23
वायो याहि शिवा दिवो वहस्वा सु स्वश्व्यम् । वहस्व महः पृथुपक्षसा रथे ॥
O Vāyu, come with auspiciousness from heaven; bear hither thy perfect swiftness of good steeds. Bear also the vast greatness on thy chariot of wide-winged power.
Mantra 24
त्वां हि सुप्सरस्तमं नृषदनेषु हूमहे । ग्रावाणं नाश्वपृष्ठं मंहना ॥
For thee—most splendid in thy fair flowing—do we call in the seats of the human being; like a pressing-stone upon the horse-backed (chariot), thou comest with impetuous force.
Mantra 25
स त्वं नो देव मनसा वायो मन्दानो अग्रियः । कृधि वाजाँ अपो धियः ॥
So thou, O god Vāyu, rejoicing in the mind and foremost in the advance, make for us the plenitudes of force; set the inspired thoughts to their works (and right activities).
They are the divine Twin gods known for swift help, healing, protection, and bringing auspicious well-being. The hymn calls their chariot to the sacrifice and praises their unbeaten power to accomplish boons.
It poetically says that repeated sacrifices and service ‘wrap’ or adorn the deities, making the relationship intimate and complete. The result is śubha—radiant, auspicious flourishing for the worshipper.
The final verse briefly invokes Vāyu to energize the mind and life-force, asking for vāja (plenitude of force) and for inspired thoughts to be set into right works. It functions as a closing reinforcement of inner vitality and effective action.
