This hymn is a forceful praise of Indra as the unrivaled Vṛtrahan—greater than all, irresistible in battle, and decisive in breaking hostile strongholds such as those of Śuṣṇa. It recalls Indra’s victorious deeds to secure protection, strength, and prosperity for the worshipper, closing with a benedictive tone that invokes allied bestowers of fortune (Ādityas) for repeated "desirable" gifts.

Mantra 1

नकिरिन्द्र त्वदुत्तरो न ज्यायाँ अस्ति वृत्रहन् । नकिरेवा यथा त्वम् ॥

None, O Indra, is higher than you, none is greater, O slayer of the coverer. None at all is as you are—your victorious consciousness stands without equal.

Mantra 2

सत्रा ते अनु कृष्टयो विश्वा चक्रेव वावृतुः । सत्रा महाँ असि श्रुतः ॥

Unceasingly, all the peoples follow after you, as spokes follow the wheel’s circle. Unceasingly you are great and widely heard—your power is a living fame that gathers the forces of the being.

Mantra 3

विश्वे चनेदना त्वा देवास इन्द्र युयुधुः । यदहा नक्तमातिरः ॥

Even all the gods, O Indra, strove with you in contest, when you overpassed both day and night—when your force went beyond the ordinary measures and broke the limits of the dualities.

Mantra 4

यत्रोत बाधितेभ्यश्चक्रं कुत्साय युध्यते । मुषाय इन्द्र सूर्यम् ॥

Where, even against the assailants, the wheel of force is set in battle for Kutsa—there, O Indra, you steal back the Sun (the hidden light) for the seeker.

Mantra 5

यत्र देवाँ ऋघायतो विश्वाँ अयुध्य एक इत् । त्वमिन्द्र वनूँरहन् ॥

Where all the gods, assailed by the violent, stood weaponless—there you alone, O Indra, struck down the enclosing resistances.

Mantra 6

यत्रोत मर्त्याय कमरिणा इन्द्र सूर्यम् । प्रावः शचीभिरेतशम् ॥

Where, for the mortal, you won (and set) the Sun, O Indra, as a sure possession—you guarded and led forward Etaśa by your powers of skill.

Mantra 7

किमादुतासि वृत्रहन्मघवन्मन्युमत्तमः । अत्राह दानुमातिरः ॥

Why then are you, O Vṛtra-slayer, O bounteous one, the most filled with wrath? Here indeed you have crossed beyond Dānu.

Mantra 8

एतद्घेदुत वीर्यमिन्द्र चकर्थ पौंस्यम् । स्त्रियं यद्दुर्हणायुवं वधीर्दुहितरं दिवः ॥

This too indeed is your hero-power, O Indra, your male might: that you struck down the woman, the hard-to-overcome, the daughter of Heaven—so that the obstructive charm might be broken.

Mantra 9

दिवश्चिद्घा दुहितरं महान्महीयमानाम् । उषासमिन्द्र सं पिणक् ॥

Even the Daughter of Heaven, great and growing in greatness—the Dawn—you, O Indra, crushed and broke (the obstruction she had become).

Mantra 10

अपोषा अनसः सरत्सम्पिष्टादह बिभ्युषी । नि यत्सीं शिश्नथद्वृषा ॥

Fleeing away, the Dawn’s car rolled from the crushed place—afraid—when the Bull (Indra) shattered her down and subdued her.

Mantra 11

एतदस्या अनः शये सुसम्पिष्टं विपाश्या । ससार सीं परावतः ॥

This is her cart lying there, well-crushed; and she, seeing clearly, has run away from afar.

Mantra 12

उत सिन्धुं विबाल्यं वितस्थानामधि क्षमि । परि ष्ठा इन्द्र मायया ॥

And you encompassed the Sindhu, spreading wide, standing out upon the earth—O Indra—by your power of formative wisdom (māyā).

Mantra 13

उत शुष्णस्य धृष्णुया प्र मृक्षो अभि वेदनम् । पुरो यदस्य सम्पिणक् ॥

And against Śuṣṇa’s stronghold you rushed with daring force; you shattered his fronts when you crushed his place of finding (his seat of knowledge turned to concealment).

Mantra 14

उत दासं कौलितरं बृहतः पर्वतादधि । अवाहन्निन्द्र शम्बरम् ॥

And also, O Indra, you struck down Śambara—the dark obstructer—cast down from the vast mountain-height; you overthrew the Dāsa force that had risen into the great hard summit of the being.

Mantra 15

उत दासस्य वर्चिनः सहस्राणि शतावधीः । अधि पञ्च प्रधीँरिव ॥

And also you slew the hundreds and thousands of the shining (yet perverse) powers of the Dāsa; you prevailed over them as one who stands above the five layered holdings, breaking their ordered ranks.

Mantra 16

उत त्यं पुत्रमग्रुवः परावृक्तं शतक्रतुः । उक्थेष्विन्द्र आभजत् ॥

And also that child of the unbending opposition, turned away from the path, Indra of a hundred powers drew back and apportioned to the hymns—he brought the lost energy into the right hearing of the Word.

Mantra 17

उत त्या तुर्वशायदू अस्नातारा शचीपतिः । इन्द्रो विद्वाँ अपारयत् ॥

And also those Turvaśa and Yadu, not yet crossed over, Indra the lord of the illumined power, knowing the way, carried safely beyond—he ferried the seeking movements across the perilous passage.

Mantra 18

उत त्या सद्य आर्या सरयोरिन्द्र पारतः । अर्णाचित्ररथावधीः ॥

And also those swift-advancing Arya forces, on the farther side of the Sarayu, O Indra—you struck down Arṇa and Citraratha: the patterned chariot-mind and the surging flood-force that opposed the passage.

Mantra 19

अनु द्वा जहिता नयोऽन्धं श्रोणं च वृत्रहन् । न तत्ते सुम्नमष्टवे ॥

Following your lead, O slayer of the Coverer, there are two abandoned paths—blindness and lameness; yet that is not your true grace for the one who seeks to move: your boon is the straight advancing of the inner journey.

Mantra 20

शतमश्मन्मयीनां पुरामिन्द्रो व्यास्यत् । दिवोदासाय दाशुषे ॥

Indra split open a hundred stone-built strongholds for Divodāsa the giver—he breaks the hard formations so the offering-soul may expand into free light.

Mantra 21

अस्वापयद्दभीतये सहस्रा त्रिंशतं हथैः । दासानामिन्द्रो मायया ॥

Indra, by his conscious power of māyā, put to sleep for Dabhīti thirty thousand of the Dāsa forces with his blows—he quieted the hostile movements by a superior mastery, not merely by brute force.

Mantra 22

स घेदुतासि वृत्रहन्त्समान इन्द्र गोपतिः । यस्ता विश्वानि चिच्युषे ॥

Yes, you indeed are that same Indra, slayer of the Coverer, lord of the luminous herds; you who have gathered and set in order all these powers—holding them for the growth of the soul.

Mantra 23

उत नूनं यदिन्द्रियं करिष्या इन्द्र पौंस्यम् । अद्या नकिष्टदा मिनत् ॥

And now, when you will accomplish your Indra-force, O Indra—your manly power of soul—today none at all can diminish that: the victorious consciousness stands intact against every denial.

Mantra 24

वामंवामं त आदुरे देवो ददात्वर्यमा । वामं पूषा वामं भगो वामं देवः करूळती ॥

May Aryaman, the god, grant you again and again the desirable plenitude for your inner offering. May Pūṣan bring that good, may Bhaga bring that luminous share, and may the divine Power Karūḷatī bestow the same delight of being.
