What the texts say
In the Bhagavata Purana, Dvaraka is the city of Krishna and the Yadus, his kinsmen, with the ocean as its protective moat. Bhagavatam 10.52.13, 10.84.70 In the same Purana, the skill of the builder Vishvakarma gave it wide avenues, gardens and golden gateway towers. Bhagavatam 10.50.50 In that city, sixteen thousand palaces were the homes of Krishna's queens. Bhagavatam 10.69.7 In the Mahabharata, Arjuna went to Dvaravati, another name for Dvaraka, and married Subhadra, Krishna's sister. Mahabharata 1.90.85 Krishna foretells in the Bhagavata Purana that the ocean will flood the city once he has left it. Bhagavatam 11.30.47
