Este breve hino em triṣṭubh dos Gautamas dirige-se a Agni como o verdadeiro Hotṛ e sacerdote interior, perguntando qual a atitude mental correta e qual a visão inspirada que melhor o alcançam. Ele roga pelo poder protetor e purificador de Agni, para que queime as forças hostis (rakṣas) e conduza o rito, trazendo à oferenda o senhor do Soma (tipicamente Indra). O hino encerra recordando a antiga vidência de Agni e exortando-o a sacrificar hoje com a «concha alegre», isto é, com uma intenção voluntária e jubilosa.
Mantra 1
का त उपेतिर्मनसो वराय भुवदग्ने शंतमा का मनीषा । को वा यज्ञैः परि दक्षं त आप केन वा ते मनसा दाशेम ॥
Que aproximação da mente se tornará para ti, ó Agni, a mais pacificadora, a mais excelente? Que manīṣā, que visão inspirada é essa? Quem, com as oferendas do sacrifício, te circundou e alcançou a tua dakṣa, a tua força? Com que intenção interior da mente poderemos, de fato, oferecer-nos a ti?
Mantra 2
एह्यग्न इह होता नि षीदादब्धः सु पुरएता भवा नः । अवतां त्वा रोदसी विश्वमिन्वे यजा महे सौमनसाय देवान् ॥
Vem aqui, ó Agni; senta-te aqui como hotar, o inviolável; sê para nós o bom guia que vai à frente. Que Céu e Terra, o par que tudo incita, te sustentem. Sacrifica aos deuses para a grande harmonia, a boa disposição luminosa da nossa alma.
Mantra 3
प्र सु विश्वान्रक्षसो धक्ष्यग्ने भवा यज्ञानामभिशस्तिपावा । अथा वह सोमपतिं हरिभ्यामातिथ्यमस्मै चकृमा सुदाव्ने ॥
Queima, ó Agni, todos os Rākṣasas, as forças da escuridão; sê o purificador que protege os nossos sacrifícios do assalto hostil. Então traz o Senhor do Soma com seus corcéis fulvos; para ele, o doador generoso, preparamos a hospitalidade da oferenda.
Mantra 4
प्रजावता वचसा वह्निरासा च हुवे नि च सत्सीह देवैः । वेषि होत्रमुत पोत्रं यजत्र बोधि प्रयन्तर्जनितर्वसूनाम् ॥
Com uma palavra plena de poder criador eu te invoco, ó portador da chama: vem e senta-te aqui com os deuses. Tu sustentas o ofício de Hotṛ e também o de Potṛ, ó digno do sacrifício; desperta como o que avança à frente, ó gerador das riquezas (vasūnām).
Mantra 5
यथा विप्रस्य मनुषो हविर्भिर्देवाँ अयजः कविभिः कविः सन् । एवा होतः सत्यतर त्वमद्याग्ने मन्द्रया जुह्वा यजस्व ॥
Como outrora, sendo vidente entre videntes, sacrificaste aos deuses pelo mortal inspirado com suas oferendas, assim agora, ó Hotṛ veracíssimo, ó Agni, sacrifica hoje com a juhū jubilosa (juhvā).
It teaches that the sacrifice succeeds through the right inner intention and insight, while Agni as Hotṛ purifies the rite, protects it from hostile forces, and brings the Gods to the offering.
Because the Vedic yajña is not only an outer ritual; it also requires a truthful, well-directed inner state. The hymn seeks the most peace-giving and effective way to align the mind with Agni.
In many Rigvedic contexts, the Soma-lord with tawny horses points to Indra, invited to drink Soma. Here Agni is asked to bring that deity as the honored guest of the offering.
