Diśā-kanyā-janma vivāhaś ca (Daśamī-vrata-prasaṅgaḥ)
Ritual-Manual (tithi-vrata) with Cosmogonic Etiology
In a didactic frame aligned with Varāha Purāṇa’s concern for Pṛthivī and ordered cosmos, the chapter narrates an etiological account of spatial organization. Mahātapā addresses a king, explaining that during Brahmā’s early creation a concern arises about where created beings will be accommodated. From Brahmā’s ears appear ten radiant maidens associated with the directions: the four cardinal directions, the vertical pair (ūrdhvā and adharā), and four additional beautiful maidens. They request a dwelling-place and worthy husbands. Brahmā assigns them residence within the brahmāṇḍa and creates the lokapālas, arranging marriages by distributing the direction-maidens to Indra, Agni, Yama, Nirṛti, Varuṇa, Vāyu, Dhanada (Kubera), and Īśāna, while placing ūrdhvā with Svayaṃ and adharā with Śeṣa. The narrative then establishes Daśamī as their favored tithi and prescribes dadhyanna consumption as a purificatory practice, promising pāpa-kṣaya and posthumous stability (pratiṣṭhā) in Brahmaloka for attentive hearers.

Mahātapā, in a didactic cosmological register, addresses a king and explains an early-creation problem faced by Brahmā: how the newly created beings will be spatially accommodated and stabilized within the brahmāṇḍa.
From Brahmā’s ears arise ten radiant maiden-deities identified with the directions (diśāḥ), including the four cardinal directions, the vertical pair (ūrdhvā/adhara), and four additional direction-maidens; they request proper residence and worthy husbands. Brahmā responds by assigning them abodes within the cosmic egg and instituting the lokapāla system, arranging their marriages to the directional guardians (Indra, Agni, Yama, Nirṛti, Varuṇa, Vāyu, Dhanada/Kubera, Īśāna), while pairing ūrdhvā with Svayaṃ and adharā with Śeṣa.
Cosmic order is sealed through vivāha as an ordering mechanism: the diśā-kanyās are fixed in place and relationally bound to their guardians, converting undifferentiated space into governed, habitable directions; the narrative then pivots from cosmogony to praxis by declaring Daśamī their favored tithi and prescribing a simple purificatory observance centered on dadhyanna.
Hearing and observing the Daśamī-oriented practice—especially dadhyanna consumption with attentive śravaṇa—destroys sin (pāpa-kṣaya) and grants posthumous stability/standing (pratiṣṭhā) in Brahmaloka.
No terrestrial toponyms are specified; the setting is cosmographic: brahmāṇḍa (cosmic egg), diśaḥ (cardinal and vertical directions), and Brahmaloka (posthumous realm).
The text links cosmic order (directional governance through lokapālas and personified diśās) with human ethical practice: attentive listening (śravaṇa) and observance on Daśamī, including prescribed food (dadhyanna), are presented as means for pāpa-kṣaya and attaining stable posthumous standing (pratiṣṭhā) in Brahmaloka.
The chapter specifies the lunar day Daśamī (the tenth tithi) as especially dear to the diśā-devīs and recommends dadhyanna consumption on that tithi as part of a suvrata-oriented observance.
Rather than naming landscapes, the narrative models ‘balance’ as spatial regulation: the diśās are assigned places within the brahmāṇḍa and paired with lokapālas, implying that ordered directions and governance stabilize the world’s habitation capacity—an abstract Purāṇic analogue to maintaining terrestrial equilibrium.
No royal dynasties are enumerated. The narrative references cosmological administrators and deities—Brahmā, Indra, Agni, Yama, Nirṛti, Varuṇa, Vāyu, Dhanada (Kubera), Īśāna, Śeṣa, and Svayaṃ—as the principal figures structuring space and ritual authority.
