Between 1919 and 1966 the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune collated manuscripts of the Mahabharata from every major regional tradition and reconstructed the text they all descend from. The result, the Critical Edition, is the version scholars cite: 73,791 verses across 1,995 chapters, with the later additions that entered the popular vulgate set aside rather than silently kept. Vedapath serves it as the canonical Mahabharata, with Sanskrit, transliteration, word-by-word meanings and translations in 30 languages.

Parvas of the Mahabharata
The Mahabharata is traditionally divided into eighteen Parvas (books).
Each Parva covers a distinct arc of the epic narrative.
Ādi Parva
The Book of Beginnings
يؤدّي «آدي بارفا» (Ādi Parva) وظيفة الأساس المعماري للـمهابهاراتا؛ إذ يرسّخ تعدّد طبقات السرد، وذاكرة الأنساب، والحيّز الأخلاقي الذي سيبلغ ذروته لاحقًا في كوروكشيترا (Kurukṣetra).
Sabhā Parva
The Book of the Assembly Hall
يُصوِّر «سَبْها-بارفا» (الكتاب الثاني) الانتقال من تماسك الإخوة إلى فنّ الحكم المؤسَّس، جاعلًا من بناء قاعة المجلس الملكي (السَّبها) وتشغيلها أداةً سردية لإظهار الشرعية السياسية.
Āraṇyaka Parva (Vana Parva)
The Book of the Forest
يروي «آراṇياكا-بارفا» (ويُشار إليه على نطاق واسع باسم «فانا-بارفا») انتقال أبناء پاندو من حياة المُلك والهيبة إلى منفىٍ منضبط بعد سلبهم باللعبة المدمّرة للنرد.
Virāṭa Parva
The Book of Virata
يروي «فيراطا-بارفا» (الكتاب الرابع) سنةَ التخفي الثانية عشرة التي قضاها أبناء باندو (أَجْنْياتافاسا)، إتمامًا لشروط المنفى وصونًا لجدارتهم السياسية بعد سلب المُلك.
Udyoga Parva
The Book of Effort
يُعَدّ «أُديُوغا بَرفا» (الكتاب الخامس) المفصلَ الدبلوماسيَّ والاستراتيجيَّ في المهابهاراتا بين المنفى والحرب المعلَنة.
Bhīṣma Parva
The Book of Bhishma
يفتتح «بهيشما-بارفا» ذروة المهابهارتا الحركية والأخلاقية، إذ ينتقل السرد من دبلوماسية طويلة إلى قتال منظَّم محكوم بالقواعد في كوروكشيترا.
Droṇa Parva (Book of Droṇa)
The Book of Drona
يمثّل «درونا-بارفا» (الكتاب السابع) تصعيدًا حاسمًا في حملة كوروكشيترا بعد سقوط بهيشما.
Karṇa Parva
The Book of Karna
يروي «كارنا بارفا» (الكتاب الثامن) المرحلة المتأخرة الحاسمة من حملة كوروكشيترا بعد سقوط دروṇa.
Śalya Parva
The Book of Shalya
يُسجِّل «شاليا-بارفا» (الكتاب التاسع) المرحلة المتأخرة من انهيار القدرة الاستراتيجية لدى الكورافا بعد فقدان قادتهم الكبار، حتى يبلغ السرد ذروة المواجهات النظامية الأخيرة في صراع كوروكشيترا.
Sauptika Parva
The Book of the Sleeping Warriors
يروي «سوبتيكا بارفا» (الكتاب العاشر) ما بعد الحرب في ليلها الثقيل، حين يواجه ما تبقّى من الكورافا هزيمة لا رجعة فيها، فينحرفون إلى فعلٍ خفيٍّ مرتبطٍ بالليل.
Strī Parva
The Book of the Women
يشكّل «ستري-بارفا» (الكتاب الحادي عشر) لحظة المحاسبة الأخلاقية والانكشاف الوجداني المباشر في المهابهارتا بعد انقضاء الحرب.
Śānti Parva
The Book of Peace
يفتتح «شَانتي-بارفا» (الكتاب الثاني عشر) في المهابهاراتا مرحلة إعادة البناء الفكري والأخلاقي بعد الحرب، إذ يصوّر ما بعد كوروكشيترا بوصفه سؤالاً حضارياً عن الحكم والواجب والتحرّر.
Anuśāsana Parva
The Book of Instructions
يُعَدّ «أنوشاسانا-بارفا» (الكتاب 13) مقطعًا كبيرًا من المتن التعليمي الذي يلي الحرب في المهابهاراتا.
Āśvamedhika Parva
The Book of the Horse Sacrifice
يروي «آشڤاميدهيكا-بارفا» (الكتاب الرابع عشر) تثبيت السيادة بعد كوركشيترا عبر شعيرة «الأشڤاميدها» المقدّسة.
Āśramavāsika Parva
The Book of the Hermitage
يُصوِّر «آشرامافاسيكا-بارفا» (الكتاب الخامس عشر) التحوّل الأخلاقي والنفسي من تدبير المُلك إلى الانسحاب الزاهد بعد حرب كوروكشيترا.
Mausala Parva
The Book of the Clubs
يؤدّي «موسالا-بارفا» (الكتاب السادس عشر) دور المفصل المتأخّر في المهابهاراتا بين انطفاء صراع كوروكشيترا وبين الخاتمة الزاهدة التي يختتم بها آل پانداف مسيرتهم.
Mahāprasthānika Parva
The Book of the Great Journey
يروي «مهاپراستهانيكا-بارفا» (الكتاب 17) الانتقال الحاسم لأبناء پاندو من سيادة المُلك إلى الرحيل الزاهد، أي «المسير العظيم» (mahāprasthāna).
Svargārohaṇa Parva
The Book of the Ascent to Heaven
يختتم «سفارجاروهَنا-بارفا» (الكتاب الثامن عشر) البنية ذات الثمانية عشر بارفا في المهابهارتا، ناقلًا سؤالها الأخلاقي من تاريخ ساحة القتال إلى ميزان التقييم بعد الموت.
