The Agni Purana is one of the eighteen Mahapuranas, unique among them for its encyclopedic breadth. Narrated by Agni (the fire god) to the sage Vasishtha, it is less a narrative text and more a comprehensive compendium of sacred knowledge. It covers an extraordinary range of subjects: from the avataras of Vishnu and creation myths to temple architecture (vastu-shastra), Ayurvedic medicine, Sanskrit grammar (vyakarana), literary theory (sahitya-shastra), prosody (chhandas), astrology (jyotisha), martial science (dhanurveda), governance (raja-dharma), and the ultimate path of yoga and Brahma-vidya. It is often called the "encyclopedia of ancient Indian knowledge" within the Puranic tradition.
