Sukta 1.49
Praskaṇva Kāṇva (Kāṇva lineage)
Uṣas (Dawn)
Gāyatrī (probable for RV 1.49; verse-level metrical confirmation recommended)
This brief Uṣas hymn invites Dawn to arrive from the luminous heights with her auspicious powers, bringing wakefulness, order, and the right rhythms of life. It depicts all beings—winged, two-footed, and four-footed—stirring into motion in accordance with ṛta (cosmic truth), as her rays illumine the whole shining realm. The Kāṇvas conclude by explicitly calling her with inspired speech, seeking true riches and inner clarity.
Mantra 1
उषो भद्रेभिरा गहि दिवश्चिद्रोचनादधि । वहन्त्वरुणप्सव उप त्वा सोमिनो गृहम् ॥
O Dawn, come with your auspicious powers, even from the luminous realm of heaven; let the ruddy-shining energies bear you near to the home of the Soma-seeker within us.
Mantra 2
सुपेशसं सुखं रथं यमध्यस्था उषस्त्वम् । तेना सुश्रवसं जनं प्रावाद्य दुहितर्दिवः ॥
Upon the well-formed and happy chariot which you mount, O Dawn, by that bring forward today the human being into good hearing and true renown; O daughter of Heaven, protect and lead us onward.
Mantra 3
वयश्चित्ते पतत्रिणो द्विपच्चतुष्पदर्जुनि । उषः प्रारन्नृतूँरनु दिवो अन्तेभ्यस्परि ॥
Even the winged creatures of yours, the two-footed and the four-footed, O bright Dawn, move forth following the rhythms of Truth, circling from the far boundaries of heaven.
Mantra 4
व्युच्छन्ती हि रश्मिभिर्विश्वमाभासि रोचनम् । तां त्वामुषर्वसूयवो गीर्भिः कण्वा अहूषत ॥
For as you rise and break forth with your rays, you illumine all the shining world. Therefore the Kaṇvas, seekers of the true riches, have called you with their inspired words, O Dawn.
Uṣas is the Dawn, praised as a radiant, auspicious power who reveals the shining world and begins the day’s rightful movement and activity.
As Dawn rises, she brings light and order: all beings awaken and move according to ṛta (cosmic truth), and the seers call her with inspired words for true prosperity and clarity.
It is best recited at dawn, especially in a morning ritual setting, to invoke auspicious awakening, mental brightness, and right timing for work, prayer, and sacrifice.
