This hymn to Indra calls the god from every direction, urging his swift arrival to the Soma-pressing and praising him as the victorious breaker of obstacles. It weaves together ritual immediacy (the Adhvaryu urged to make Soma flow) with Indra’s cosmic role as Vṛtra-slayer, concluding in imagery of abundance where even the settled powers of nature seem to “distribute” increase.

Mantra 1

यदिन्द्र प्रागपागुदङ्न्यग्वा हूयसे नृभिः । सिमा पुरू नृषूतो अस्यानवेऽसि प्रशर्ध तुर्वशे ॥

O Indra, whether you are called from the east or west, from above or below by men, you are indeed the many one who is born of the human soul-force; you are the conquering press forward for the seeker—come as the victorious strength for Turvaśa, the soul that strives.

यद्वा रुमे रुशमे श्यावके कृप इन्द्र मादयसे सचा । कण्वासस्त्वा ब्रह्मभिः स्तोमवाहस इन्द्रा यच्छन्त्या गहि ॥

Whether with Ruma, with Ruśama, with Śyāvaka, with Kṛpa you take delight, O Indra, in companionship—yet the Kaṇvas, bearing hymns and mantras, draw you here: come, for our inspired words are your chariot.

Mantra 3

यथा गौरो अपा कृतं तृष्यन्नेत्यवेरिणम् । आपित्वे नः प्रपित्वे तूयमा गहि कण्वेषु सु सचा पिब ॥

As the pale-gold one, thirsting, goes to the water made ready, to the unfailing stream—so come swiftly to our approach and our full meeting; among the Kaṇvas drink in close companionship: let the inner delight be satisfied.

मन्दन्तु त्वा मघवन्निन्द्रेन्दवो राधोदेयाय सुन्वते । आमुष्या सोममपिबश्चमू सुतं ज्येष्ठं तद्दधिषे सहः ॥

May the soma-drops gladden you, O bountiful Indra, for the giver of plenitude to the presser. You drank that Soma of the other (the ancient exemplar), pressed in the cup, the eldest: thereby you set in you the might that conquers.

Mantra 5

प्र चक्रे सहसा सहो बभञ्ज मन्युमोजसा । विश्वे त इन्द्र पृतनायवो यहो नि वृक्षा इव येमिरे ॥

You set your might in motion by might; by strength you broke the wrath that disturbs. All your battle-seekers, O Indra, sink down—like trees felled—when they confront the sheer force of your victorious advance.

सहस्रेणेव सचते यवीयुधा यस्त आनळुपस्तुतिम् । पुत्रं प्रावर्गं कृणुते सुवीर्ये दाश्नोति नमउक्तिभिः ॥

He who attends you as if with a thousand youthful weapons, and reaches to you with his near-praise—he fashions a son as a forward-leading outcome in the field of heroic power; by words of reverent affirmation he attains the fulfilment.

Mantra 7

मा भेम मा श्रमिष्मोग्रस्य सख्ये तव । महत्ते वृष्णो अभिचक्ष्यं कृतं पश्येम तुर्वशं यदुम् ॥

Let us not fear; let us not grow weary in your fierce comradeship. O Bull of force, may we behold the great deed made manifest to the inner sight—(the winning of) Turvaśa and Yadu, the powers to be brought over to our side.

Mantra 8

सव्यामनु स्फिग्यं वावसे वृषा न दानो अस्य रोषति । मध्वा सम्पृक्ताः सारघेण धेनवस्तूयमेहि द्रवा पिब ॥

Along the left (course) the swelling abundance is set in motion; like a bull, his giving pours forth in a glad surge. The streams (of delight) mixed with honey and essence—O milch-cows of plenitude—come swiftly; run here and drink.

अश्वी रथी सुरूप इद्गोमाँ इदिन्द्र ते सखा । श्वात्रभाजा वयसा सचते सदा चन्द्रो याति सभामुप ॥

Horse-possessing, chariot-borne, fair-formed, rich in luminous herds—such is your companion, O Indra. Sharing in heroic strength, he keeps company by his vital growth; ever radiant he goes up to the assembly (of the gods/powers).

ऋश्यो न तृष्यन्नवपानमा गहि पिबा सोमं वशाँ अनु । निमेघमानो मघवन्दिवेदिव ओजिष्ठं दधिषे सहः ॥

Like a seer-beast thirsting, come to the draught; drink the Soma according to the will that draws you. Gathering yourself inwardly, O bountiful one, day by day you establish the most puissant force.

Mantra 11

अध्वर्यो द्रावया त्वं सोममिन्द्रः पिपासति । उप नूनं युयुजे वृषणा हरी आ च जगाम वृत्रहा ॥

O Adhvaryu, make the Soma flow; Indra thirsts for it. Now he has yoked his two strong bay steeds; the slayer of the Coverer has come near.

Mantra 12

स्वयं चित्स मन्यते दाशुरिर्जनो यत्रा सोमस्य तृम्पसि । इदं ते अन्नं युज्यं समुक्षितं तस्येहि प्र द्रवा पिब ॥

Even the giver himself thinks (it is so): where you take satisfaction of Soma. This is your fitting food, well-sprinkled and prepared; come to it—run forth and drink.

Mantra 13

रथेष्ठायाध्वर्यवः सोममिन्द्राय सोतन । अधि ब्रध्नस्याद्रयो वि चक्षते सुन्वन्तो दाश्वध्वरम् ॥

O Adhvaryus, press Soma for Indra who stands firm on the chariot-path. Upon the shining foundation the pressing-stones are seen at work; the pressers, offering the sacrifice, bring the rite to manifestation.

Mantra 14

उप ब्रध्नं वावाता वृषणा हरी इन्द्रमपसु वक्षतः । अर्वाञ्चं त्वा सप्तयोऽध्वरश्रियो वहन्तु सवनेदुप ॥

Near to the shining one the two strong bay steeds blow and bear Indra across the waters. Toward us may the seven (impelling powers), the splendors of the sacrifice, carry you—at each pressing—hither.

Mantra 15

प्र पूषणं वृणीमहे युज्याय पुरूवसुम् । स शक्र शिक्ष पुरुहूत नो धिया तुजे राये विमोचन ॥

We choose Pūṣan in front, the one fit to be yoked, rich in many plenitudes. O mighty one, much-invoked, teach us by the inspired thought—O releaser—for the impelling of spiritual wealth and fullness.

सं नः शिशीहि भुरिजोरिव क्षुरं रास्व रायो विमोचन । त्वे तन्नः सुवेदमुस्रियं वसु यं त्वं हिनोषि मर्त्यम् ॥

Sharpen us together, like a razor in the hands of the leather-worker; give us, O releaser, the wealth of plenitude. In you is that well-found, dawning treasure which you set in motion within the mortal.

वेमि त्वा पूषन्नृञ्जसे वेमि स्तोतव आघृणे । न तस्य वेम्यरणं हि तद्वसो स्तुषे पज्राय साम्ने ॥

I know you, O Pūṣan, in your straight-going leading; I know how to praise you, O warmly-radiant one. I do not know the limit of that abundance of yours; therefore I affirm you in the strong, firm chant of the Pajra.

Mantra 18

परा गावो यवसं कच्चिदाघृणे नित्यं रेक्णो अमर्त्य । अस्माकं पूषन्नविता शिवो भव मंहिष्ठो वाजसातये ॥

Even if the rays (cows) go far away to their pasture, O warmly-radiant Immortal, your richness remains constant. Be for us, O Pūṣan, a blissful protector; be the most bountiful for the winning of plenitude of force.

Mantra 19

स्थूरं राधः शताश्वं कुरुङ्गस्य दिविष्टिषु । राज्ञस्त्वेषस्य सुभगस्य रातिषु तुर्वशेष्वमन्महि ॥

We have recognised and held in mind the solid abundance—rich in a hundred steeds—among the heavenly-strivings of Kuruṅga, in the gifts of the impetuous and fortunate king, in the bestowals among the Turvaśas.

Mantra 20

धीभिः सातानि काण्वस्य वाजिनः प्रियमेधैरभिद्युभिः । षष्टिं सहस्रानु निर्मजामजे निर्यूथानि गवामृषिः ॥

By the inspired thoughts, by the winnings of the Kaṇva—by the forceful ones, by the dear-minded and heaven-conquering powers—we draw out, in due sequence, sixty thousands; the seer brings forth the herds of the rays from concealment.

वृक्षाश्चिन्मे अभिपित्वे अरारणुः । गां भजन्त मेहनाश्वं भजन्त मेहना ॥

Even the fixed powers (the trees) have responded to me in my close dwelling; they distribute to me the ray (cow), they distribute to me the steed (power)—the givers of increase.
