What the texts say

In the Shiva Purana, the Divine Mother is praised as Kali, the beloved of Shiva, the Great Maya-Shakti who abides in Shiva's own realm. Shiva Purana 2.3.6.38 The Markandeya Purana says that the whole cosmic egg is pervaded by Kali, the mighty doer of cosmic acts. Markandeya Purana 92.35 The Devi Bhagavatam speaks of Kali, who devours the entire universe, with its moving and non-moving beings, at the end of the kalpa. Devi Bhagavatam 3.26.57 Elsewhere in the Markandeya Purana, Kali sprang forth from the Goddess's frowning brow, fierce-faced, bearing a sword and a noose. Markandeya Purana 87.5 In its account of Raktabija's slaying, the Goddess strikes him with a trident, and Kali drinks up his blood. Markandeya Purana 88.55 The Devi Bhagavatam adds that, because Kali slew Chanda and Munda, she is granted the renowned name Chamunda. Devi Bhagavatam 5.26.65
