Sukta 61

Sukta 8.61

This hymn is a direct, urgent invitation for Indra to hear the poet’s call “from both sides” and to come near for Soma-drinking, empowered by inspired thought (dhī). It praises Indra as the strong-armed breaker of obstacles and fortified enclosures (purandara), repeatedly asking him to arrive, accept the offering, and release wealth, protection, and victorious force. The closing imagery concentrates Indra’s might into the poised vajra, ready to shatter resistance and establish triumphant order.

Inside Sukta 61

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A two-sided hearing is requested: Indra is asked to listen from every direction and come close to the poet’s word for Soma-drinking (8.61.1).

  2. Development

Praise intensifies through warrior-epithets and the logic of reciprocity: if Indra hears the call, the wealth-seekers will invoke him with stomas, expecting protection and riches (e.g., 8.61.10).

  3. Climax

Indra’s power is portrayed as concentrated and ready—he is ‘compacted for heroic might,’ with bull-strong arms setting the vajra into decisive poise (8.61.18).

  4. Where it settles

The hymn ends with the image of the poised thunderbolt, implying assurance: Indra’s arrival and readiness guarantee the breaking of obstacles and the granting of boons.

The deity: Indra

  • Cosmic functionChampion of ṛta in the battlefield of cosmos—he smashes obstructive powers, releases resources (waters/wealth), and secures victory and expansion for his worshippers.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened will and courageous intelligence that breaks inner ‘fortresses’ of fear, inertia, and limitation; Soma symbolizes uplifted vitality that intensifies clarity and decisive action.
