Sukta 8.60

Devata

Agni

Chandas

Gāyatrī/Anuṣṭubh-like short meter (uncertain; needs metrical verification)

This hymn is an invocation to Agni as the chosen hotṛ, urging him to come and sit on the barhis to conduct the sacrifice and carry offerings to the gods. It repeatedly asks Agni for protection—especially from rakṣas (hostile/dark forces), yātu (sorcery), obstruction, ill-being, and hunger—while also praying for strength, increase, and successful gains (vājas). Overall, it frames Agni as both ritual priest and near, reliable guardian who secures the sacrificer’s path.

Inside Sukta 60

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct summons: Agni is invited to come, chosen as hotṛ, and asked to take his seat on the barhis with the prepared offering.

  2. Development

Agni’s ritual competence is emphasized (yajiṣṭha), then the hymn moves into petitions for help in gains/strength and for intimate support as the ‘nearest’ divine ally.

  3. Climax

Protective intensity peaks in the explicit apotropaic pleas—repel rakṣas, block sorcery, drive away ill-being and hunger, and keep hostile powers from entering the community.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn settles into confidence in Agni’s guardianship and sustaining increase: the rite is secured, obstacles are pushed away, and the sacrificer’s path is made safe and fruitful.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the luminous fire-principle, invoked as hotṛ (priest), messenger, and the one who sits on the sacred grass to receive and convey the oblation. He is addressed as yajiṣṭha (“most fit for sacrifice”) and as the nearest help, asked to repel rakṣas and hostile powers.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between humans and gods: he kindles the rite, transports offerings, purifies, and maintains ṛta by converting material oblations into divine nourishment.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened will and discerning flame in the practitioner—clarity, aspiration, and protective vigilance that burns away inner darkness, fear, inertia, and harmful influences.

Frequently Asked Questions

It invites Agni to preside as the sacrificial priest (hotṛ), accept offerings, and protect the worshippers by driving away hostile forces, sorcery, obstacles, and hunger.

Because Agni is the most immediately accessible god in the ritual—present as the visible fire—and is relied on as a close, dependable support for strength and spiritual increase.

It can be recited at the start of a fire-offering (homa) or during daily lamp/fire worship to invoke clarity, protection, and the removal of negativity and impediments, alongside a simple ghee offering.
