Indra

This hymn is a direct, urgent invitation for Indra to hear the poet’s call “from both sides” and to come near for Soma-drinking, empowered by inspired thought (dhī). It praises Indra as the strong-armed breaker of obstacles and fortified enclosures (purandara), repeatedly asking him to arrive, accept the offering, and release wealth, protection, and victorious force. Mantra 1

उभयं शृणवच्च न इन्द्रो अर्वागिदं वचः । सत्राच्या मघवा सोमपीतये धिया शविष्ठ आ गमत् ॥

May Indra hear for us from both sides and come near to this word. Let the bounteous one, moving straight in his course, come by the power of thought to the drinking of Soma—the most mighty—arriving to us.

Mantra 2

तं हि स्वराजं वृषभं तमोजसे धिषणे निष्टतक्षतुः । उतोपमानां प्रथमो नि षीदसि सोमकामं हि ते मनः ॥

For him—the self-ruler, the bull—they have fashioned by their inspired powers for strength. And among those who are to be compared, you sit first; for your mind indeed desires Soma.

Mantra 3

आ वृषस्व पुरूवसो सुतस्येन्द्रान्धसः । विद्मा हि त्वा हरिवः पृत्सु सासहिमधृष्टं चिद्दधृष्वणिम् ॥

Pour yourself out, O Indra rich in abundance, upon the pressed Soma’s ecstasy. For we know you, O lord of the bright steeds, as the conqueror in battles, daring even where none can withstand.

Mantra 4

अप्रामिसत्य मघवन्तथेदसदिन्द्र क्रत्वा यथा वशः । सनेम वाजं तव शिप्रिन्नवसा मक्षू चिद्यन्तो अद्रिवः ॥

O bounteous one whose truth does not fail, let it be so, O Indra, by your will and power, as you choose. May we win by your help the plenitude of force, O strong-jawed one, even swiftly as we advance, O wielder of the stone.

Mantra 5

शग्ध्यू षु शचीपत इन्द्र विश्वाभिरूतिभिः । भगं न हि त्वा यशसं वसुविदमनु शूर चरामसि ॥

Grant us strength indeed, O Indra, lord of Śacī, with all your helps. For like Bhaga we follow you—the glorious one, the finder of plenitudes—O hero, moving in your track.

Mantra 6

पौरो अश्वस्य पुरुकृद्गवामस्युत्सो देव हिरण्ययः । नकिर्हि दानं परिमर्धिषत्त्वे यद्यद्यामि तदा भर ॥

O Godhead, you are the ancient wellspring of the Horse—of the driving force of the being—and the many-worker for the Rays (cows of light); you are the golden fountain. None can diminish the gift that is in you. Whatever path I take, from there bring to me your bringing of plenitude.

Mantra 7

त्वं ह्येहि चेरवे विदा भगं वसुत्तये । उद्वावृषस्व मघवन्गविष्टय उदिन्द्राश्वमिष्टये ॥

Come indeed to the moving seeker; reveal the Bhaga, the portion of delight, for our increase of true wealth. Rise up and pour yourself out, O Maghavan, for the winning of the Rays; rise up, O Indra, for the winning of the Horse-force.

Mantra 8

त्वं पुरू सहस्राणि शतानि च यूथा दानाय मंहसे । आ पुरंदरं चकृम विप्रवचस इन्द्रं गायन्तोऽवसे ॥

You heap up many thousands and hundreds in herds for the giving—your lavishness of plenitude. We, the seers of inspired speech, have made Indra the breaker of the closed places our near presence by our singing, for help.

Mantra 9

अविप्रो वा यदविधद्विप्रो वेन्द्र ते वचः । स प्र ममन्दत्त्वाया शतक्रतो प्राचामन्यो अहंसन ॥

Whether it was an unillumined man who fashioned it, or a seer—O Indra—this word of yours: it gladdened and strengthened the one who turned forward in mind toward you, O Shatakratu, and made him a winner of the ‘I’-sense (a firm self-possession).

Mantra 10

उग्रबाहुर्म्रक्षकृत्वा पुरंदरो यदि मे शृणवद्धवम् । वसूयवो वसुपतिं शतक्रतुं स्तोमैरिन्द्रं हवामहे ॥

If the strong-armed, the breaker of closed places, hears my call—then we who seek the true riches invoke Indra, the lord of plenitude, the hundred-powered, with our hymns.

Mantra 11

न पापासो मनामहे नारायासो न जळ्हवः । यदिन्न्विन्द्रं वृषणं सचा सुते सखायं कृणवामहै ॥

We do not think ourselves evil, nor hostile, nor crooked in impulse, since now we would make Indra the Bull of power our companion beside the pressed Soma.

Mantra 12

उग्रं युयुज्म पृतनासु सासहिमृणकातिमदाभ्यम् । वेदा भृमं चित्सनिता रथीतमो वाजिनं यमिदू नशत् ॥

We yoke the fierce Power in the battles, the unconquerable who overcomes, who cuts away the binding debt. He knows even the turning confusion and yet wins; the best of charioteers attains the plenitude of force that indeed comes to him.

Mantra 13

यत इन्द्र भयामहे ततो नो अभयं कृधि । मघवञ्छग्धि तव तन्न ऊतिभिर्वि द्विषो वि मृधो जहि ॥

From whatever we fear, O Indra, from that make for us fearlessness. O Maghavan, grant us your power of overcoming; with your helpings scatter the haters, scatter the hostile assaults.

Mantra 14

त्वं हि राधस्पते राधसो महः क्षयस्यासि विधतः । तं त्वा वयं मघवन्निन्द्र गिर्वणः सुतावन्तो हवामहे ॥

You indeed are lord of the radiance-gift, the dweller-master of the great abundance for the worshipper. Therefore we, having the pressed Soma, invoke you—O Maghavan Indra, delighting in the songs—for your effective presence.

Mantra 15

इन्द्रः स्पळुत वृत्रहा परस्पा नो वरेण्यः । स नो रक्षिषच्चरमं स मध्यमं स पश्चात्पातु नः पुरः ॥

Indra—manifest and victorious—slayer of the coverer, the far-protector, our choice-worthy power: may he guard our last step and our middle step; may he protect us from behind and in front.

Mantra 16

त्वं नः पश्चादधरादुत्तरात्पुर इन्द्र नि पाहि विश्वतः । आरे अस्मत्कृणुहि दैव्यं भयमारे हेतीरदेवीः ॥

O Indra, guard us firmly from behind and from below and from above and in front, from every side. Drive far away from us the fear that comes from the beyond; drive far away the hostile strokes, the undivine forces.

Mantra 17

अद्याद्या श्वःश्व इन्द्र त्रास्व परे च नः । विश्वा च नो जरितॄन्त्सत्पते अहा दिवा नक्तं च रक्षिषः ॥

Day by day and again day by day, and from tomorrow to tomorrow, O Indra, save us, and save us from what is beyond us. O lord of the true, protect all our singers, by day and by night.

प्रभङ्गी शूरो मघवा तुवीमघः सम्मिश्लो विर्याय कम् । उभा ते बाहू वृषणा शतक्रतो नि या वज्रं मिमिक्षतुः ॥

Breaker-through, hero, bounteous one of vast giving—Indra is compacted for the act of power. Both your arms, bull-strong, O Shatakratu, set down and press the thunderbolt into its poise.
