Mantra 1

हविष्कृणुध्वमा गमदध्वर्युर्वनते पुनः । विद्वाँ अस्य प्रशासनम् ॥

Prepare the oblation; may the Adhvaryu come forward again to win. Knowing his ordinance, he moves by the right rule of the work.

Mantra 2

नि तिग्ममभ्यंशुं सीदद्धोता मनावधि । जुषाणो अस्य सख्यम् ॥

Let the Hotṛ sit down close to the sharp, bright ray, upon the mind: accepting the friendship of this Power, he enters the right intimacy of the work.

Mantra 3

अन्तरिच्छन्ति तं जने रुद्रं परो मनीषया । गृभ्णन्ति जिह्वया ससम् ॥

Men seek within for that Rudra, beyond by the discerning thought; they seize him with the tongue, the mighty one—by the power of the inspired word.

Mantra 4

जाम्यतीतपे धनुर्वयोधा अरुहद्वनम् । दृषदं जिह्वयावधीत् ॥

In the close kinship he kindled the bow; the life-bearer climbed into the wood. With the tongue he struck down the hard resistance—speech becoming the weapon of the inner force.

Mantra 5

चरन्वत्सो रुशन्निह निदातारं न विन्दते । वेति स्तोतव अम्ब्यम् ॥

Moving here, the ruddy calf finds no one to set it down; it goes seeking the mothering source, O singer—yearning for the origin that nourishes.

Mantra 6

उतो न्वस्य यन्महदश्वावद्योजनं बृहद् । दामा रथस्य ददृशे ॥

And further, great indeed is his horse-borne course, vast in its joining: the binding band of his chariot is seen—his ordered harnessing of the movement.

Mantra 7

दुहन्ति सप्तैकामुप द्वा पञ्च सृजतः । तीर्थे सिन्धोरधि स्वरे ॥

Seven powers draw out the one hidden essence; then two and five set it flowing—at the ford of the inner River, upon the luminous tone of awakening.

Mantra 8

आ दशभिर्विवस्वत इन्द्रः कोशमचुच्यवीत् । खेदया त्रिवृता दिवः ॥

With ten luminous impulsions from Vivasvat, Indra dislodges the hidden treasury; by the pressure that breaks fatigue, he opens the threefold enclosure of heaven.

Mantra 9

परि त्रिधातुरध्वरं जूर्णिरेति नवीयसी । मध्वा होतारो अञ्जते ॥

Around the sacrifice founded in the threefold order, the fresh-driving energy moves; with honeyed delight the invoking powers anoint themselves for the work.

Mantra 10

सिञ्चन्ति नमसावतमुच्चाचक्रं परिज्मानम् । नीचीनबारमक्षितम् ॥

With reverent offering they pour into the deep vessel, the wide-circling and all-moving; it bears the load that descends, yet it does not perish.

Mantra 11

अभ्यारमिदद्रयो निषिक्तं पुष्करे मधु । अवतस्य विसर्जने ॥

Close in, the pressing-stones pour the honeyed delight into the lotus-cup, at the releasing of the depths.

Mantra 12

गाव उपावतावतं मही यज्ञस्य रप्सुदा । उभा कर्णा हिरण्यया ॥

The Cows—rays of illumination—come near to the depth; the Vast One, giver of delight to the sacrifice, has both ears of gold: she hears and receives the true call.

Mantra 13

आ सुते सिञ्चत श्रियं रोदस्योरभिश्रियम् । रसा दधीत वृषभम् ॥

Pour into the pressed Soma the power of plenitude—an overflowing splendor for Heaven and Earth; with the sap of delight establish the Bull-force within.

Mantra 14

ते जानत स्वमोक्यं सं वत्सासो न मातृभिः । मिथो नसन्त जामिभिः ॥

They recognize their own home of being; like calves with their mothers they meet and unite—kin with kin—in mutuality.

Mantra 15

उप स्रक्वेषु बप्सतः कृण्वते धरुणं दिवि । इन्द्रे अग्ना नमः स्वः ॥

Near, upon the garlands, they utter their fervent cry and build a firm foundation in the heaven of the mind; to Indra and Agni—reverence in the luminous world.

अधुक्षत्पिप्युषीमिषमूर्जं सप्तपदीमरिः । सूर्यस्य सप्त रश्मिभिः ॥

He has milked out the swelling nourishment and force, the seven-stepped plenitude; with the seven rays of the Sun it is accomplished.

Mantra 17

सोमस्य मित्रावरुणोदिता सूर आ ददे । तदातुरस्य भेषजम् ॥

Of Soma, Mitra and Varuṇa—upholding the Sun’s uprisen law—have granted (to us); that becomes the healing medicine for the distressed being within.

Mantra 18

उतो न्वस्य यत्पदं हर्यतस्य निधान्यम् । परि द्यां जिह्वयातनत् ॥

And now, that station of his—of the desirable one, his secret deposit—he stretched around heaven with the tongue: the power of utterance encircling the luminous mind-space.
