Sukta 66

Mantra 1

प्र मित्रयोर्वरुणयोः स्तोमो न एतु शूष्यः । नमस्वान्तुविजातयोः ॥

Let our hymn go forth to Mitra and to Varuṇa, vigorous with force; bearing reverence, to the two wide-born powers.

Mantra 2

या धारयन्त देवाः सुदक्षा दक्षपितरा । असुर्याय प्रमहसा ॥

They who uphold—the gods, well-skilled, with Dakṣa as their father—by sovereign power and by surpassing greatness.

Mantra 3

ता नः स्तिपा तनूपा वरुण जरितॄणाम् । मित्र साधयतं धियः ॥

You two, guardians of our steps and guardians of our being—O Varuṇa, of the singers; O Mitra, accomplish and set right our thoughts.

Mantra 4

यदद्य सूर उदितेऽनागा मित्रो अर्यमा । सुवाति सविता भगः ॥

When today, at the sun’s rising, Mitra and Aryaman are without fault, Savitṛ and Bhaga bring forth and impel the right gifts.

Mantra 5

सुप्रावीरस्तु स क्षयः प्र नु यामन्त्सुदानवः । ये नो अंहोऽतिपिप्रति ॥

May that dwelling-state of ours be rich in heroic energies; forward, indeed, may the good givers lead us on—those who carry us beyond the constriction and wrong that presses upon us.

Mantra 6

उत स्वराजो अदितिरदब्धस्य व्रतस्य ये । महो राजान ईशते ॥

And Aditi, self-sovereign, is the free wideness; by the unassailable law—those mighty Kings exercise their lordship.

Mantra 7

प्रति वां सूर उदिते मित्रं गृणीषे वरुणम् । अर्यमणं रिशादसम् ॥

At the sun’s uprising I answer you with praise—Mitra, Varuṇa, and Aryaman, the smiter of the hostile hurt—so that the light in us may be met by the law of truth.

Mantra 8

राया हिरण्यया मतिरियमवृकाय शवसे । इयं विप्रा मेधसातये ॥

This thought is a golden plenitude of being, for the strength that is un-wolfed by division; this inspired utterance is for the winning of luminous intelligence.

Mantra 9

ते स्याम देव वरुण ते मित्र सूरिभिः सह । इषं स्वश्च धीमहि ॥

May we be yours, O divine Varuṇa; may we be yours, O Mitra, together with the seers of light; may we hold in our thought the nourishing force and the wide heaven of consciousness.

Mantra 10

बहवः सूरचक्षसोऽग्निजिह्वा ऋतावृधः । त्रीणि ये येमुर्विदथानि धीतिभिर्विश्वानि परिभूतिभिः ॥

Many are they who see by the sun, whose tongue is the flame, who increase by the Right; they have ordered the three assemblies of the sacrifice, encompassing all by their masteries of becoming.

Mantra 11

वि ये दधुः शरदं मासमादहर्यज्ञमक्तुं चादृचम् । अनाप्यं वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमा क्षत्रं राजान आशत ॥

They who have set in order the year and the months, the day, the sacrifice, the night, and the mantra; Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman—the Kings—have attained an unassailable sovereignty.

Mantra 12

तद्वो अद्य मनामहे सूक्तैः सूर उदिते । यदोहते वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमा यूयमृतस्य रथ्यः ॥

That we call to mind today with well-fashioned hymns at the sun’s rising: how Varuṇa, Mitra, and Aryaman bear us onward—you who are the charioteers of the Truth.

Mantra 13

ऋतावान ऋतजाता ऋतावृधो घोरासो अनृतद्विषः । तेषां वः सुम्ने सुच्छर्दिष्टमे नरः स्याम ये च सूरयः ॥

Possessed of Truth, born of Truth, increasing by Truth, fierce against the untrue—within their happiest grace and most sheltering protection may we be, O strong ones, we and the illumined leaders.

Mantra 14

उदु त्यद्दर्शतं वपुर्दिव एति प्रतिह्वरे । यदीमाशुर्वहति देव एतशो विश्वस्मै चक्षसे अरम् ॥

Up rises that form, beautiful to behold; it goes in answer to the call from heaven—when the swift divine Etaśa bears it, made ready for the seeing of all.

Mantra 15

शीर्ष्णःशीर्ष्णो जगतस्तस्थुषस्पतिं समया विश्वमा रजः । सप्त स्वसारः सुविताय सूर्यं वहन्ति हरितो रथे ॥

From summit to summit they uphold the Lord of all that moves and all that stands; in a single accord they traverse the whole luminous expanse. The seven sister-powers bear the Sun for a fair and happy going, the green steeds yoked to the chariot.

Mantra 16

तच्चक्षुर्देवहितं शुक्रमुच्चरत् । पश्येम शरदः शतं जीवेम शरदः शतम् ॥

That eye, set by the gods, the bright one, rises upward. May we see for a hundred autumns; may we live for a hundred autumns.

Mantra 17

काव्येभिरदाभ्या यातं वरुण द्युमत् । मित्रश्च सोमपीतये ॥

Come, O Varuṇa, with the unassailable powers of inspired seeing; come in the luminous strength—Mitra too—for the drinking of Soma.

Mantra 18

दिवो धामभिर्वरुण मित्रश्चा यातमद्रुहा । पिबतं सोममातुजी ॥

With the stations of heaven come, O Varuṇa, and Mitra too, you who do not betray. Drink the Soma that impels swiftly onward.

Mantra 19

आ यातं मित्रावरुणा जुषाणावाहुतिं नरा । पातं सोममृतावृधा ॥

Come, O Mitra and Varuṇa, rejoicing in the offering, O strong ones. Drink the Soma, you who increase the Ṛta.
