AVŚ 2.13 ദീർഘായുസ്സിനെയും സംരക്ഷണത്തെയും അഭ്യർത്ഥിക്കുന്ന ഒരു സൂക്തമാണ്. ഇതിൽ അഗ്നിയെ ‘ആയുർദാഃ’ (ആയുസ്സ് ദാനിക്കുന്നവൻ) ആയി പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ച്, പാകമായ വാർദ്ധക്യം (ജരസ്) നൽകുകയും, പിതാവ് തന്റെ മക്കളെ ചുറ്റി കാത്തുപോലെ സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നവനെ കാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യണമെന്നു അപേക്ഷിക്കുന്നു. അഗ്നിയുടെ പോഷകമായ ‘നെയ്യും തേനും’ എന്ന പ്രതീകങ്ങളോടൊപ്പം, ശാപങ്ങളും ഹാനികളും തടയാൻ കൈവശം വഹിക്കാവുന്ന കവചമായി ‘വാസഃ’ (സംരക്ഷണവസ്ത്രം) സ്ഥാപിച്ച്, വീട്ടിനും കന്നുകാലിസമ്പത്തിനും ക്ഷേമം, സമ്പത്ത്, വർധന എന്നിവ മുദ്രവെക്കുന്നു.

ഹേ അഗ്നേ, ആയുര്ദാതാവേ, പാകമായ ജരാവസ്ഥയെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നവനേ, ഘൃതമുഖനേ, ഘൃതപൃഷ്ഠനേ—ഹേ അഗ്നേ! ഗോജന്യമായ മധുരവും മനോഹരവും ആയ ഘൃതം പാനം ചെയ്തിട്ട്, പിതാവ് പുത്രന്മാരെപ്പോലെ, ഈ പുരുഷനെ ചുറ്റും പൊതിഞ്ഞ് കാത്തുരക്ഷിക്കണമേ.

ഞങ്ങളുടെ വർചസ്സിനായി ഇതിനെ ഞങ്ങളുടെ ചുറ്റും പൊതിയുക, പൊതിയുക; ജരയും മരണവും അകറ്റി, ദീർഘായുസ്സ് സൃഷ്ടിക്കുവിൻ. ബൃഹസ്പതി ഈ വസ്ത്രം രാജാ സോമനു ദാനം ചെയ്തു—എല്ലാദിക്കിലും ചുറ്റി ധരിക്കുവാൻ, നിശ്ചയമായും.

സ്വസ്തി (ക്ഷേമം)ക്കായി നീ ഈ വസ്ത്രം നിന്റെ ചുറ്റും ധരിച്ചു; നീ നിശ്ചയമായും കന്നുകാലിക്കൂട്ടങ്ങളുടെ രക്ഷകനായി—അഭിശസ്തി (ശാപം/ദോഷാരോപണം) നിന്നു. നീ നൂറു വർഷം ജീവിക്ക; അനേകം ശരദ്കാലങ്ങൾ വരെ; സമ്പത്തും പോഷണവും—അവയും നിന്റെ ചുറ്റും ചേർത്ത് പൊതിഞ്ഞുകൊൾക.

ഹേ അശ്മാൻ (കല്ലേ), ഇവിടെ വരിക; അടുത്തുതന്നെ നില്ക്കുക. നിന്റെ ശരീരം കല്ലുപോലെ ദൃഢമാകട്ടെ. എല്ലാ ദേവന്മാരും ഒരുമിച്ച് നിനക്കായി ആയുസ്സ് രൂപപ്പെടുത്തട്ടെ—നൂറു ശരദ്കാലങ്ങൾ.
