Anuvaka 4

Suktas in Anuvaka 4

Sukta 31

Rishi: Traditionally RV-derived; in AV 20 the seer attributions follow Rigvedic parallels (Indra-stuti lineage). | Devata: Indra (with the Haris as his conveyance). | 5 Mantras

Sukta 32

Rishi: Rigvedic provenance (Indra-stotra tradition; AV 20 is a collection of RV-derived hymns) | Devata: Indra (with solar witness/splendour invoked) | 3 Mantras

Sukta 33

Rishi: Ṛgvedic provenance (Indra-stotra); in AV 20, verses are largely adopted from the Ṛgveda; specific r̥ṣi attribution follows the RV source-hymn tradition rather than Atharvanic family lists. | Devata: Indra | 3 Mantras

Sukta 34

Rishi: Traditionally Indra-stuti material in AV 20 is largely Rigvedic in origin; r̥ṣi aligns with the RV source-hymn’s seer (to be specified by RV concordance). | Devata: Indra | 18 Mantras

Sukta 35

Rishi: Gautama (as implied by the closing verse of the set; RV-family attribution carried into AV 20) | Devata: Indra (Vṛtrahan, releaser of waters) | 16 Mantras

Sukta 36

Rishi: Attributed in AV 20 largely to Ṛgvedic seers for Indra hymns (RV provenance); specific r̥ṣi for this verse follows the RV hymn-source attribution. | Devata: Indra | 11 Mantras

Sukta 37

Rishi: As in RV parallel (Indra-stuti tradition; AV 20 largely reprises RV hymns—r̥ṣi per RV source-hymn) | Devata: Indra (Vajrahasta) | 11 Mantras

Sukta 38

Rishi: Ṛgvedic provenance (AV 20 is a borrowing-book) | Devata: Indra | 6 Mantras

Sukta 39

Rishi: Ṛgvedic provenance. | Devata: Indra | 5 Mantras

Sukta 40

Rishi: Traditionally aligned with Ṛgvedic provenance in AV 20 (late appendix); specific seer uncertain without full anukramaṇī context. | Devata: Agni/Svadhā (functional focus on fire and svadhā-power; Pitṛ-oriented efficacy). | 3 Mantras

Frequently Asked Questions

They are predominantly Ṛgvedic-style Indra-stutis used atharvanically to summon Indra, strengthen Soma-powered might, and obtain protection and victory by breaking obstructive forces.

Suktas 20.36–20.37 foreground Indra as vajrahasta and enclosure-breaker, while 20.41 compresses the heroic myth-cycle (Dadhīci’s bones) as a template for crushing resistance.

Sukta 20.40 links Indraic brilliance with an ordered fire-act where svadhā is made to ‘burn in sequence,’ reinforcing ritual continuity and ancestral satisfaction as part of household protection.
